Yes you need to hook up all wiring to the receiver. No you can watch TV without the receiver on, just use the volume on your TV remote. If you decide to use your TV with the Receiver, make sure it is on SAT/CATV. If you decide to watch Netflix, Amazon or anything else on the SmartTV, switch the receiver to TV and make sure your volume is down, so that you do not receive the feedback from the TV, it will sound like the TV is echoing.
