“Does the upconversion change the aspect ratio of the picture? For example, would it change it from full screen to letterbox? And if so: - Is the upconversion applied automatically when using an HDMI cable? - Can it be turned off? Thanks!”

You can select all that from the setup menu , upconversion varies according to that, but can't be turned off ,just select 480i and is the lowest level , if you don't want that just buy the sr210p is similar and you get a great picture without upconversion, you will be satisfied many buyers like the sr210p because it offers many adjustments
