“I have an older Sony 55" flat/wall-mounted tv. We get hd, and we're connected through Direct TV. Cannot get Amazon Prime movies or Hulu, etc. What is the all round best choice for me to add something like Roku, Firesticks, etc?”

I just purchased a Fire Stick 4k. Based on my research the Fire Stick is a more robust versitle device. ROKU may be simpler to select shows, but I liked the Amazon Fire Stick due to Android operating system and the voice support. Will be hooking it up tonight to watch some Apple TV shows.
