“Why is my receiver getting so hot? After about 5-10 minutes of playing music it will go into protect mode and shut off. It is also in an open area. Is there something I can do to prevent this?”

Verify that there is no short at your speaker terminals at the receiver and at the speakers. Sometimes a strand or two of the wiring will touch the adjacent terminal causing you to have to turn the volume way up. If you have no shorts, sounds like you need to return the unit for a replacement.
