I have a 10 year old Samsung 55" TV and a new Sony 5.2 receiver. When connecting the new receiver according to the schematic I cannot control the TV volume any longer. I have tried other settings but nothing seems to work. Only external speakers work null

Check your TV audio settings. Should have an option for internal, external or internal + external.

How is the TV being connected to the receiver? HDMI? Also, when you say external speakers, are you saying the TV speakers? Typically to control volume to an external receiver, you will need to program your remote to control the receiver volume. For example, my setup goes from my Xfinity box to the Sony receiver input and then outputs from the Sony receiver to my Vizio TV. I had to program my Xfinity remote to control the volume of my Sony receiver.
