5.2 2 front, 2 rear, 1 center, 2 sub connectors 7.2 adds 2 side connectors Watts are amplifier output totals with all or only 1 channel driven. Very few receivers have individual channel volume controls. The can be varied in the speaker setup menu.

So 5.2 means 5 speakers and 2 subwoofers and 7.2 means 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers. When matching speakers and Audio/Video (A/V) receivers, the ohm rating of the speaker should be equal to or greater than the ohm rating of the receiver to avoid a risk of hardware damage. Any speakers that feature bare wire connection will work to this receiver, as long as their impedances are from 6 to 16 ohms. Hope this helps! David
