“The Receiver rear panel RCA jacks are labeled "SUBWOOFER" not "PRE OUT". My understanding is since it is NOT labeled "PRE OUT" I can use a passive subwoofer. Related question: Will the receiver's "SUBWOOFER" output be too powerful for an Active SW?”

Hi JimmJoe, Thanks for your inquiry. The STR-DH590 doesn't support passive subwoofers. The SUBWOOFER OUT jacks of the stereo receiver are designed for active subwoofers. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I finally got to speak to someone at Sony. This receiver is INCOMPATIBLE with passive subwoofer speakers. They also said the output labeled "SUBWOOFER" actually is a "PRE OUT" intended only for active speakers. I purchased the Sony SACS9 active subwoofer and threw out my old subwoofer. The SACS9 hooks up simply with the provided RCA "audio/phono-type" cable to the STRDH590.
