Reverie is not the first game. The Trails series is split into different arcs, so many games exist, and their localizations have been all over the place. Playing Reverie first could lead to some confusing/less impactful story moments.

You can technically start with any game, but I’d really not recommend starting here. I won’t say you should play every single game beforehand, but I’d at least finish a line of games (Sky, Cold Steel, Zero/Azure) so you have familiarity with at least some of the cast.
