You don’t have to use Alexa but it can make it easier as you just have to speak into the remote. However, you still need the cable remote to get a cable channel. That has nothing to do with Alexa but with the Smart TV features. You can stream Netflix and Prime without turning on the cable box but for regular channels, you still need the cable box remote to get the channels on it. You can ask Alexa or just use the ‘circle’ on the remote to go to the input that you want. You have to remember which one has the cable channels, mine is HDMI3, then you turn on the cable box with the cable remote and negotiate the cable channels with the cable remote. You have to use two remotes.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. What I would recommend you to do is to set-up the TV to power on on the cable box (Settings> display and sound> power on> and select Last input used), select the input in which the cable box has been connected and when on the screen, turn off and on the TV. It should send you directly to the cable box. Then call the cable company to set up the remote in order to work with the TV. Since toshiba's remote works with infrared and bluetooth, and normal remotes are just infrared, this will allow her just to turn on and off the TV, but as she will have the cable box as power on option, it would be better. Having this in mind, if she wants to change any settings or watch netflix or anything else, she will have to use the remote of the TV
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Not really. This tv is setup with Fire TV. Some operations can be done with the Cable remote once the input has been selected through the Fire TV remote This is definitely setup through Amazon Fire TV. It is the main OS for the whole viewing experience. I would look at another TV if you don’t want the Fire TV/Alexa/Amazon.
