Do I need a separate controller for each string? null

Each light string has its own Generation II Controller, all the light strings on one tree can be controlled as one display with the use of the Twinkly App. The Twinkly App will map each of the LED lights and group the strings together to act as one for creating designs and effects.

Each string has its own integrated controller, that's a few feet from the wall adapter, and several feet from the first bulbs. It has one rubber covered button that can be used to turn them on and switch between preinstalled patterns. It's also used to set them up with the app, which will guide you through the setup process. It might take a few tries to get them set up the first time around. Better instructions would help there. The controllers do get warm, but not so hot that they'll burn you. This is normal. You might want to make sure there's room around them to help them cool down though.
