Does this speaker require an app to use null

No, this speaker does not require an app to use. Just pair it to your device and control your media through whatever app you're using for media. Once you pair it once, you don't have to re-pair it unless you're using it on multiple devices, but it's quick to connect once you've done it once and it's a recognized device. I play audio from my Fire Stick through it so I don't have to turn my TV so loud and disturb anyone else in the house. This method is great for hotels when I've traveled. I can set the speaker right next to me and don't have the TV across the room so loud.
