As long as your computer has the appropriate USB connection, it’ll work. There’s no such thing as a desktop-only or laptop-only external drive. Maybe you’re confusing with internal drives, which ARE for desktops only (though you could put one in an enclosure and connect to a laptop).

It has a separate DC input which the included power supply connects to, the other end of the power supply plugs into a wall outlet (AC mains). The drive can be used with either a laptop or desktop computer, but you need to have a wall outlet available to power the hard drive. In principle, you could get a suitable battery and with the right connector, you could power the hard drive for portable / remote use, but it would be easier to just buy a hard drive designed to be powered from the USB port of your laptop computer.
