It can be vented outside, but the default configuration is for inside venting. This worked out great for me, All extra hardware to vent outside, whether through the top or rear is included. Too bad the instructions are not too clear how to do it.

J, the venting can be changed to vent the mcrowave outside. It is ready out of the box to recirculate air.
