Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Once you plug it in the fan and light button should turn on (left side of the microwave) when you chose to use them. The fan has 4 levels from high to very low. The light has 2 levels. Bottom line if you plugged the microwave in then they should work. You didn't miss or do anything wrong. No other connections required. My assumption is that it's defective. Hope I have answered your question
