The instructions say you must do both (cabinet and back wall). I would highly recommend you do it that way. It is easy, 3-4 screws to the wall and 2 to the cabinet.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A provided bracket is fastened to the wall that has two hangers at the bottom. Hook the lower back edge of mircowave on the bracket. After hooking, raise the front up flush with the overhead cabinet. Screw the enclosed two bolts into microwave thru holes you've drilled, from template, into the cabinet base. Tighten the screws.
