This is probably the most powerful PC I've ever owned. A major beast.
However it weighs a ton and while it might be "portable" its definitely not something you are going to want to carry on a daily basis.
Got this for graphic design work more than for gaming but if it hadn't been such a good deal I may have gotten a high end 2 in 1 instead so I could use the touchscreen with a stylus.
Definitely can handle the gaming though, My kids use it for Steam and it rocks at everything they've thrown at it.
I probably wouldn't recommend this particular model as I've seen other brands with better specs for less money now and if you aren't going to lug it around you can get a more powerful desktop for less money.

I've used this laptop for a solid 2 and a half years and its running extremely strong. I've used it ranging from high demanding software, to ultra high graphics on a lot of AAA games with no fps drops. It's battery life isn't the greatest when not on power-save mode when not plugged in, but honestly where is there not a outlet to charge now a days. Overall, great buy if your looking for something that requires a decent rig, but too much if your looking for something basic or just plan on playing games like fortnite.

I have had this computer for less than a year, and i have had to send it to dell twice for a failed power supply on the motherboard. The computer is excellent on performance. Video processing and gaming are superb. But as for the power supply, i am worried. My previous computer was a gaming MSI and it lasted 5 years before i started having screen issues. The fact that i have had this computer for less than a year and i have had to send it in twice for repairs is not very comforting. My worry is i will have another failure after my one year warranty is up and then i will have to pay a lot to get it repaired.

Great piece of hardware, not reliable

First off I'll give the disclaimer that I bought an open box model to save $(I got the laptop for around $1400ish). The laptop could have had issues upon purchase.
While the laptop did work(about 3 hours), hands down the best gaming laptop that you could buy in this price range. This laptop was quick and powerful. I tried several games (PUBG, Fortnite, Arma, etc) on it and it ran awesome. I also ran Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on it as well as visual studio, android studio, and other IDE's to check performance. Ran awesome.
I had an issue where I experienced a sudden loss in power(game began to run awful).
I began troubleshooting and discovered that the video card hardware wasn't being picked up by the machine after the machine output an error code. I re-installed (clean install) of nvidia drivers with no luck. Re-installed windows and drivers with no luck. My end diagnosis was a hardware failure inside. I didn't go any further in fear of ruining the chance for a return.
I returned to Best Buy for a full refund. Thankful for their awesome 14 day return policy. I elected to not purchase a replacement. I have read a lot of reviews similar to the problems that I have had.
Overall, while the laptop was working, it ran as good if not better than my gaming desktop (i7, AMD R9 390x 8gb, 16gb ram). It is fairly large and is considered a "desktop replacement" laptop.
Best Buy has always made it right with me and I wouldn't hesitate one bit making a large purchase such as this from them with the comfort of knowing that they will work with me should something go wrong.

Great laptop performance, small boot drive

The performance on this is very good- the video card is fast and games are awesome.
You will find it has USB C ports but a smaller number (3) than you might expect. It also does not have and SD card slot or CD/DVD - all in the specs. The "power share" port that can charge your phone even when the laptop is off requires you to either unplug and replug after a sleep/shutdown or plug it in while it is sleeping/off - it stops sending power when it transitions for on to some other state. Hopefully they will fix this with firmware.
The boot hard drive (M.2 SATA 128 GB) is a little small and not a NVMe/PCIe drive (it is SSD SATA speed- fast but the others are faster in tests). There are 3 m.2 slots, so I added a 1TB to resolve the space issue.

Bought this one around year and half ago. Fast PC, runs great, good driver support, rare compatibility problems. Expected better quality, it broke down 6 months in, Dell sent me a box and pays for FedEx. Got my PC back within a week working again, no problems ever since. All in all recommendations for this one it's stable and not to loud for a gaming PC. Still runs all games on best settings. 4 stars because it broke down so fast, wasn't expecting that.

Bought this used, only came with the laptop charger and laptop, no manuals, box, etc. laptop was about 6-8 months old when I bought it.
Pros: awesome performance for the money; Alienware tech support is unlike any other I’ve experienced; relatively amazing speakers on the laptop, screen/lid feels solid and robust, design is subjective but it looks great to me; thermals are good, keyboard isn’t hot when gaming; multiple expansion options for the notebook to fit needs; machine comes with configurable lighting options
Cons: heavy machine, more desktop replacement than portable; fans whirl loudly under load; rubberized surface of hand placement is hard to keep pristine

Stay away!. Dell is nothing but trouble

Short version: Quality issues + Dell's worst customer service = STAY AWAY!!!!!!
Long version:
Bought this as an open box, looked and felt brand new in box with some of the cling film still on. Powered it on for the first time, some of the keys on the keyboard wont work. Called customer support and they wanted to send an engineer to fix it. This is when the nightmare started, the customer service is so poor and disorganized, they have no clue on how to handle a simple repair. The agents I spoke to won't respond to any emails, so I ended up calling the customer support again, staying on hold for 30 minutes and explaining the whole thing again. They schedule a date for repair, but no one shows up and I had to call them to learn that some parts(they only use refurb parts, not new ones) were on back order. They will reschedule and forget to follow up, then I call back again. This happened over 5 times over a 2 - 3 week period. Frustrated, I wrote to the CEO and the board of directors. I get an email form a guy from "advanced resolutions" promising to resolve this. He won't respond to emails either!. So I write to the CEO and the board again and the guy responds, thanking me for "my response" with no word of apology. Finally, one day the the engineer called me and he came in with the part. Replaced the keyboard, but guess what, some new keys weren't working!. Luckily I was under the best buy's extended holiday return policy, so I took it to the store and just returned it.
During this nightmarish experience I learnt a few things about Dell,.
1. When you buy something brand new from them, you have 30 days to report any failures. During this period you will get a brand new replacement or your money back.
2. Beyond 30 days, if something goes wrong, you will be offered a "Refurbished" replacement or to repair your device. No new replacement! even though it is just 30 days old.
3. For a premium laptop that costs around 2K, the customer service is absolutely horrific. No one has a clue of what's going on and even writing to the CEO and the board does not work.
4. Just google "Alienware customer service" and you will see an amazing amount of people complaining about this device failing and the "keyboard issue" that I had appeared to be pretty common. Again, for a premium laptop, this is unacceptable.
To summarize, I would stay away from anything that has a dell logo. If you are still adamant on buying an alienware, buy the geek squad protection for at least 4 years and not the dell warranty, because bestbuy at least has great customer service and you can go to the store to get help if something goes wrong, buy Dell will give you the runaround of your life and you will finally get frustrated and throw the laptop in trash. Never a Dell ever in my life again.

High Powered Desktop Replacement

First off, this laptop is a beast. I was originally considering building a desktop, but as I started looking more into how I would use it, I decided that my needs were best met by a high end gaming laptop. The Alienware 17 R4 was a perfect fit for my needs.
I have been doing some gaming with it (The Crew and Assassin's Creed III at full settings) and it has been performing excellently. During normal use the fans are barely at a whisper, but during gaming, they are noticeable. It isn't overly distracting, but it isn't silent during gaming.
I picked the FHD (1920 x 1080) over any higher resolution displays primarily because of the battery life benefit of the non-G-sync display (the system seamlessly switches between the onboard Intel graphics of the i7-7700HQ and the GTX1070 when it is needed to extend battery life). I plan on purchasing a dedicated monitor for photo editing and bigger screen gaming. I haven't done any gaming on the battery, but I haven't had to plug it in after 5-6 hours of web browsing and YouTube videos.
My mixed use has been the following: gaming, video editing (DaVinci Resolve), and some music production (Reaper).
My final thoughts are this hefty (almost 10lb) laptop can be a desktop replacement for most.

I like this laptop because it has two full size 2280 slots and a half height 2240 PCIe slot, besides the 1TB SATA drive. It uses a faster storage bus and it runs really well when gaming ... only negative is fan noise and the massive size. Plus you can buy a graphics adapter when you need to upgrade the graphics card when docked at home.

This was a great laptop loved the lights on it and the facial recognition for the sign in. Love the design and the feel of the keyboard and material it was made out of. Con it is heavy another con is the WiFi signal kept losing signal on and off at first I thought it was my WiFi but it turned out it was the laptop I tried updating it and nothing worked. I unfortunately returned it and purchased an asus.

I purchased this laptop for animation and game development. The screen size is great for both. There’s a long list of great features, and it looks pretty cool at the same time. The biggest issue that I ran into was finding a backpack that it would fit into (it is extra deep because of the cooling system). After a great deal of research, I found that the only backpack that could hold it is the Alienware Vindicator 2.0. So save yourself the search and just buy it at the same time.
