Title: Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series G513QY-212.SG15 Gaming Laptop
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*****Review*****
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking for an AMD gaming laptop that is amazing for its price to performance? Well, look no further ladies and gentlemen. This Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series comes with an eight core Ryzen 9 5900HX, AMD Radeon RX 6800M, 16GB DDR4 memory, 512GB SSD, 300Hz screen (3ms response) and some nifty AMD software features that will boost your gaming experience.
When it comes down to the gaming potential for this laptop I was honestly not disappointed. To sum up what I tested; you shouldn’t have any problem throwing your library of AAA games at this Strix. All the games I tested were tested at the native resolution (1920x1080) and everything maxed out. Just to name some of the games I tested:
Red Dead Redemption 2 - 94fps~
Counter-Strike GO - 252fps~
Witcher 3 - 115fps~
Metro Exodus - 54fps~
Borderlands 3 - 95 fps~
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla - 83fps~
I normally also play my games with a pair of gaming headphones but because I wanted to test out the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series speaker capabilities; here’s my take on it. The gaming laptop already comes with Dolby Access software installed so you can toggle between set profiles such as movies, games, music and voice. My preference for all around usability was the games profile; I mean lets be real it’s a gaming laptop afterall… I also preferred this profile because it gave the best lows in my opinion. Overall I have no complaints on the speakers as they provided enough “oomph” during my gaming sessions and were also loud enough to where I didn’t hear the fans.
I am sure the question then comes up of how is the cooling since you’re able to throw your library of AAA games at it? The Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series comes with an advanced cooling vapor chamber which is supposed to improve cooling and lower surface temperatures. During my gaming session I can’t complain because Asus’ cooling vapor chamber system here actually works; during my gaming sessions my CPU temperatures were mainly kept below 80 degrees celsius. On top of that there’s also a special IR sensor that is supposed to monitor temperatures on the keyboard surface to keep your palms and hands cool during long gaming sessions. Again I didn’t encounter any issues with heat on the keyboard surface during my gaming sessions and was able to remain comfortable throughout.
Now you’re probably thinking with all this gaming potential and the ability to keep things cool thanks to the advanced cooling vapor chamber; how is the overall battery life? So in my opinion where this laptop really shines bright is the battery life. On average daily use I was hitting about a solid 9 hours of runtime. Because this is a gaming laptop, I really wanted to test the battery while I was gaming. On average I can run a AAA game at comfortable frames for about an hour where the frames will then diminish as expected when the battery percentage drops. All in all I am impressed with the overall battery performance; solid in my books.
Overall the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series is a great gaming laptop. If you’re into the whole “flashy gaming” look; Asus has you covered here with RGB customizability. In addition if you aren’t too happy with the armor caps you are more than welcome to swap them around to match your taste. The build quality of the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series looks very nice and feels pretty sturdy. I don’t really have too many complaints for this laptop in my own personal preference and usage because overall I will be using this as a gaming machine as opposed to something like work where I require a webcam (yes this model doesn’t come with a webcam). So my final conclusion is that if you’re looking for the best bang (performance) for your buck, that is an all AMD system with great gaming performance, good cooling and excellent battery life; this Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Series gaming laptop is for you.

I don't have GPU problem. The unit I got had a very bad screen bleed on one spot. It is very noticeable even at normal lighting condition. Most of my games has darker background so I can't help to notice it while gaming. It is ashamed really, my 5 years old Asus doesn't have this problem. I guess quality control is the thing in the past.

Runs hotter than I would like, 95c on the cpu just running ffxiv. These laptops are hit and miss with thermals. I bought 2 of these at the same time and the other never gets above 83c when playung ffxiv at same settings. Can only attribute this to a poor paste job. Did not open the laptop to verify this for reasons. Returned, fingers crossed on the 3rd.

As the first laptop to market with the Radeon RX 6800M GPU, the ROG Strix Advantage Edition has a lot of expectations riding on it.
I was hoping to use the machine as a desktop replacement, one that I could dock at my desk for gaming on a larger monitor, with the ability to haul it to the couch while my wife games on the TV. We'll get into that later, though. To start with, let's talk about the machine.
Build quality
====================
The Strix AE has an aluminum lid and keyboard deck, the latter of which has a soft finish that is cool to the touch. The rest is quality plastic. Accessing the memory and hard drives is a matter of removing the screws on the underside and prying the plastic shell apart, which I have now done several times, and I feel I can do so without any fear of accidentally cracking anything. The RGB lights that adorn the front lip of the machine are connected via cables, so be careful opening the machine or they can be pulled loose. Setting them back into place if you do this is a mild challenge. The changeable magnetic cap near the screen hinge is an oddity, but not an unwelcome one. The keyboard feels nice to type on, with enough travel on a press to feel substantial. The touchpad is a touchpad. I hate touchpads, but at least this one has no glaring issues.
Screen
====================
The 1080p screen is kind of overkill at 300hz. Unless you play competitive FPS games like CS:Go with the settings turned all the way down, there's no way this machine is hitting 300fps on the internal display, in part due to the lack of a mux switch, and even then, I have my doubts. It is a gorgeous screen to look at. There is no ghosting that I can see, and the color definition really pops, though it does not get as bright overall as my desktop displays. The FreeSync range is 60-300 and if you fall below that, it has Low Framerate Compensation to help keep stuttering to a minimum.
Cooling
====================
In Performance and Turbo modes, this laptop does get a little toasty. The AMD Advantage specifications are centered around keeping the keyboard area cool, and it does a good job at that. There are intakes on the bottom of the machine (and Asus claims within the keyboard), and exhaust vents on the back and sides. This is great if you are using it on a stand or on a desk, but it can get a little uncomfortable on your lap. Plan on a cooling pad or something to put some separation between you and the machine.
In my testing the laptop consistently hit 95C in Performance mode, with the GPU reaching around 85C. While this is still 10 degrees south of making the CPU throttle, it still feels high. Setting the laptop to Silent mode keeps the temps (both CPU and GPU) somewhere in the mid-70s but results in a performance hit. In spite of that, every game I tested in performance mode was still able to hit 60+fps at max settings. Here were some of my results:
Horizon Zero Dawn: 85fps Performance / 65fps Silent
Resident Evil 2: 160 fps Performance / 120 fps Silent
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: 80fps Performance / 65 fps Silent
Doom (2016): 200fps* Performance / 170fps Silent
Sniper Elite 4: 120 fps Performance / 100fps Silent
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order: 115 fps Performance / 95 fps Silent
*Doom seemed to cap at 200fps for some reason. Resident Evil 2 issues stability warnings at max settings. I turned Textures and Shadows down a notch to get rid of the warning.
Ports
====================
The Strix AE has a standard array of ports, including ethernet and HDMI, 3 standard USB3 ports and one DisplayPort enabled USB-C 3.2 port. The lack of Thunderbolt is a little disappointing, but the USB-C port still has enough bandwidth to drive high framerates on most resolutions (more on this at the end). While the USB-C port allows a direct connection to the GPU, the HDMI port does not, and so offers no performance boost.
Upgrading
====================
As I mentioned above, the RAM and M.2 slots are easily accessible. I'm certain you've already read or watched reviews about the poor secondary timings of the included RAM. I ordered 16GB of CL22 memory with faster subtimings to test myself, and in benchmarks noted around a 15% increase to average framerate across the titles I tested. Some of them were much lower than that, some were higher. Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Watch Dogs Legion seemed to get the most benefit at around 20% to average framerates, however for the purposes of this review, I used the stock RAM.
In a lot of cases, 15-20% isn't all that noticeable on this machine. It is hard to tell the difference between Shadow of the Tomb Raider running at 100fps or 120fps, for example. The place where you are likely to notice the benefit is in games with a poor minimum framerate or ones that aren't quite hitting 60fps average stock.
Other Notes
====================
Although most games I tested launched using the 6800m with no problem, a couple of them (Yakuza Like A Dragon and Zombie Army 4, to be specific) defaulted to Integrated graphics. If this happens to you, it is a simple, one-time fix in Windows 10 to go into Graphics settings and set the game to launch in high performance mode.
To see how well the laptop would work as a desktop replacement, I hooked up the laptop to my 3440x1440 Ultrawide monitor via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and here are my results (performance mode):
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 80+ fps average on “Highest” preset
Horizon Zero Dawn: 70+ fps average on “Original” preset
Resident Evil 2: 100+ fps average on “Graphics Priority” preset
Sniper Elite 4: 90+ fps on “Very High” preset
Doom (2016): 150+ average fps on “Ultra” preset
Assassin's Creed Valhalla: 70+ fps average on “Medium” preset
Ace Combat 7: 100+ FPS on “Very High” preset
Far Cry New Dawn: 80+ FPS on “High” preset
Watch Dogs Legion: 70+ fps average on “High” preset
Overall
====================
The ASUS ROG Strix AMD Advantage Edition performs very well for its price range, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a midrange desktop replacement or someone who prefers AMD to Nvidia.

ASUS - ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition 15.6" FHD Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 9-5900HX - 16GB Memory - Radeon RX 6800M - 512GB SSD
SUMMERY
this is a game changer in terms of what AMD can offer, it is a high performer, great for most dedicated gamers, also can pass as a workhorse for video and image editing, at a great entry price.
the only thing I would complain about is that in order to use the 6800GPU, you will need to attach an external screen.
Aesthetics and build quality:
this laptop is a beauty, it is well built with almost frameless bezels, the hinges feel very sturdy, and the matts black finish looks awesome!
the LED RGB lighting is customizable to any color scheme you want, although you cannot separate the color scheme on the backlit keyboard from the one going under the laptop. that would've been great in work conditions.
Screen quality:
the screen brightness and latency are WONDERFUL! it is more than enough and great at this price. again, to unlock the full potential of the GPU you would need an external screen. but with that being said, the quality of the screen is very acceptable.
the keyboard and touch pad:
the keyboard feels and works very nicely, the placement of the keys are on point.
the touch pad is big and comfortable but it is more on the right side, and you might hit it accidently if you are using the keyboard.
when gaming, am attaching my external keyboard and mouse for higher response rates.
sound quality:
the sound on this laptop is very acceptable, the highs and midrange are very accurate and satisfying while the bass is lower than what I would love. but if am being real, most of the time am either using my headphones.
upgradability and ease of access:
this is a laptop that was designed with accessibility in mind.
you can remove the back cover by unscrewing 10 screws to access the board where you can locate and easily as another NVME SSD, and add or replace RAM.
Ports:
- USB type C
- HDMI
- Ethernet
- USB 3 ( 3 ports)
- headphone/ speaker jack
the laptop doesn't come with a camera, but you can download an app from Asus to use your mobile phone as a webcam for this laptop for your meetings and video calls (you might as well just use your phone to conduct the meeting in that case unless you are sharing screen or presenting).
size and weight: this is a very good laptop when it comes to size and weight, my daily driver is a Lenovo YOGA 5 pro with NVIDIA GPU and this new laptop from AMD is almost identical in size and weight.
the laptop would fit in any 15.6 inch screen laptop bag, but if you want to add the enormous 280Watts power brick, then its a different story. the brick is very big and heavy (check the pictures) and will add a substantial weight if you carry your laptop around all day.
GAME play:
this laptop blew my mind when I downloaded and installed Microsoft flight simulator and started playing it. the game is 84GB of data that needs to be downloaded and installed and the graphics on it were AMAZING. no lag, no gittering, no screen freeze or locking and absolutely wonderful game flow.
I also played Horizon, with every setting maxed out and the laptop flowed through the game without breaking a sweat or even becoming louder.
conclusion:
this is a great laptop for gamers that offers wonderful features packed in a sleeper body. it did all tasks without giving me any trouble and I am very happy with the performance.
the interchangeable corners Asus provided (Red, silver, and transparent black are great if you want to change the aesthetic of the laptop or if you want to take it to work with you (would look more professional when using the transparent one than the red one).
the combination of the Ryzen 9 and the Radeon 6800 offered seamless experience across the board and this is going to be my daily driver for at least a couple years to come.
and I know that when I come home from work ill be able to kick back and play some games without worrying that this laptop won't be capable of delivering the best experience possible at this price point.

I have had this laptop for 10 days now. I've been gaming on it about 7 out of 10 days to test everything out. I will update this review if I have any problems.
I was on the fence about purchasing after reading good and bad reviews. I would recommend buying this brand new to avoid buying one with existing problems. My guess is some people have returned it and it keeps being repurchased with the same problems. After reading reviews and watching video reviews I started my laptop up, updated all of the Asus software first (as recommended), and then updated Windows, to avoid any problems.
After 10 days I am extremely happy with it. The performance is unbelievable for the price. The processor and GPU are at the top of any benchmark charts. The 6800m is basically performing as well or outperforming the 3080 mobile version. The screen is bright, refresh rate is impressive at 300hz, and the sound is good enough that I haven't plugged in my headphones yet. Battery life is great, I actually played a game unplugged (unknowingly) and didn't notice until I was shutting the computer down that I forgot to plug it in. It will run hot like any performance laptop. I read an article that AMD says that 95 degrees Celsius is normal, but just to be safe I adjusted the fan curve in the ASUS Armour Crate software to keep it cool. Now, most games at Ultra Graphics, and unlimited FPS stay under 90 and most under 85. GPU stays relatively cool. For the less demanding games CPU temp stays around 80. I've also put it on a laptop stand to let it breathe a little. I haven't had one problem yet. No shutdowns, no lag, no performance issues, nothing. Asus nailed it perfectly. The RGB is cool too, it lights up the keyboard and the base of the laptop underneath. I would recommend this laptop at this price point to anybody, AMD and Asus have given us a rare value relative to all of the other competitors. Don't hesitate on this one, it's a beast.

This is an awesome gaming laptop by ASUS if you need to game on the move. Playing various first person shooters to open world games was just a wonderful experience. Graphics are smooth and displays the game with very crisp graphics. The build quality of the laptop is also excellent and feels like it will last years to come. The keys feel positive when typing and navigating games. The widescreen format of this laptop makes the screen feel bigger than a 15" laptop but maintaining a good footprint on the table. In the box, you can change the red accent for a silver or black accent but the red just looks cool. Throughout all my gaming so far, I have not experienced any latency or lag while gaming on wifi. One thing of note, because this is a powerful laptop, the power supply is huge. Also since the graphics cards is working hard to keep your gaming smooth, you will want to make sure you have good ventilation around the laptop because the heat is exhausted out of the laptop all around the laptop. The software on board manages the fan speed but if you are gaming with good graphics, expect the fan to be working hard. I would consider elevating the back of the laptop while gaming. The LED lighting included in the keyboard and effects lighting under the laptop makes this a visual eye grab when others are in the room. This laptop definitely lets you game with flare and style.

Overall this laptop has been fantastic. The SSD and RAM kit that come with the laptop are far from great so I would recommend replacing them. I ended up replacing the ram with a 32gb kit from crucial and added a 1TB M.2 SSD from Samsung and it has made this laptop even better. It plays every game I own at more than high enough frame rates. Due to the pretty great price point on this laptop I would say that even after the upgrades that I ended up doing to this laptop it still came in priced under some laptops that I would argue are still not as good as this one.
The construction is very good. It does have a lot of plastic on it but at no point have I felt concerned that it couldn't handle riding around in my backpack all day. It is also on the heavier side but I bought the laptop for performance and not for its convenience. It also lacks a camera but this doesn't bother me as I have no use for one. The keyboard is pretty good for what I would expect out of a laptop, not the best typing experience I have ever had but all the keys feel nice and the added keys for media, volume, fans, and RGB are nice to have. The spacebar on this laptop will engage even when pressed at the absolute edge of the key which is something I have noticed isn't always the case in some laptops.
The fans on this laptop do get pretty loud but the amount of heat that this unit creates justifies needing a solid cooling solution. Even though they do get loud they do not have that annoying high pitched whine that you will get out of some laptop cooling solutions. Most of the noise is a lower pitched rushing air type of noise.
My only real complaint about the unit is that Asus put the power, battery, HDD, and airplane mode lights under the right side of the screen above the keyboard. This wouldn't be an issue expect for the fact that when you are doing anything that is using the hard drive the light is constantly blinking directly under your screen and it can get annoying but its nothin that a bit of black nail polish or a sharpie cant fix.

After having this laptop for a day I think I can safely recommend it, the battery life is insane, its not too heavy, and it feels sturdy with a good keyboard and trackpad. Furthermore it scored #2 on Cinabenchr23 single core test hitting 1452, and Ill update it with multi core and gpu later. The computer is pretty much silent unless heavily gaming and at max speed the fans are loud but they do not have a annoying whine. The screen is nice and bright and I like the 300hz panel, but I would have preferred 1440p 144hz. (I think there is one with this display) For this price I don’t think there is any competing laptop as it beats the 3070 in almost every game and trades blows with the 3080.

The Performance per dollar on this machine is really great! I was a bit hesitant about trying out a all AMD laptop but this thing can actually handle quite a lot. The battery life and versatility of this laptop is amazing. When I am at home I turn it on to get the best performance and can enjoy decent frame rates upscaling to 4k and amazing frame rates at 1080p, and when I am on the go, I set all settings to offer me some insane battery life.
The only negatives I have with this laptop is, switching between presets and changing from performance mode and battery saving mode can be a bit tricky with windows software, ASUS armory crate, and AMD software all in place with the ability to edit how the computer performs. I found that disabling "game mode" in windows and letting AMD and ASUS software effect the machine lead to a bit better performance. Overall don't expect this thing to reach over 100 fps steady at 4k raytraced. Other than that, I really don't like how the RAM in this machine is actually low quality and replacing it literally gives you up to a 20% increase in performance (you can look this up and fact check me if you like), and the SSD is pretty fast but not the fastest in the market. If your going to buy this laptop, I recommend replacing the ram and getting a SSD with a faster read and write speed. Other than that the estimated time remaining on battery is a bit glitchy as there is alot of software from the big three companies working together....so just give it a few minutes to display the right info after you have made changes to the settings. The fans are not at all loud compared to previous generation laptops but keep in mind it will sound like there is a mini fan in your room when it is working hard. The keyboard never really gets hot. Like literally all other laptops this thing will reach its thermal limit and wont ever perform equal to their desktop counterparts, but this laptop sure does put up a great fight and beats a lot of what is out there in the market today.
The build quality so far is actually pretty great. LEDs are decently bright, the display does its job but isn't the best display I have ever seen. The keyboard is actually very enjoyable to use. The laptop is mainly made of plastic but the lid is aluminum. The lid and plastic pieces are a bit prone to showing finger prints.
On COD Warzone upscaled to 4k, raytracing on, graphics settings on high, you can expect to get in the range of 40-50 fps... no raytracing adds maybe 10-20 more fps... Generally if your running 4k, you wont ever get above 70 fps. On 1080p this thing dominates and can get you those crispy 100+ frame rates. I recommend watching some review videos for game to game specific fps counts.
Overall if your looking to spend less than 2000 on a laptop, I would definitely recommend this.
