Powerful, portable laptop with some drawbacks

Powerful, portable laptop with some drawbacks. I've had this laptop for week and I've decided to return it and get the Zephyrus G15 RTX 3070 instead. The performance is outstanding -- Fast, responsive, runs games at high quality settings. The Ryzen 9 is really lives up to the hype. I like the laptop but a couple of things made me want upgrade. The display is just average (1920x1080) and is not bad, but the text and details aren't nearly as good as some others on the market. The colors wash out a bit when you have a white background and there is a noticeable backlight bleed at times. Colors is games seem a bit muted as well. A sharp colorful display is very high on my list and this just doesn't cut it for me. I think the 1440 QHD display on the G15 will solve this problem. The keyboard feels good for typing, but the backlighting doesn't work well at certain levels and in different lighting environments with the silver keyboard. This is a noted issue on many youtube reviews and I immediately noticed it myself. The GPU and processor runs games flawlessly at high settings, but after about 40 minutes this thing was burning hot near the top panel and almost too hot for me to play using the keyboard comfortably. Another big drawback. The fans were cranking at full power and we very noticeable. It's understandable given the load but I just think the G15 will be able to cool the machine better. Overall, its a very good computer, but you can see where ASUS had to cutback to keep the machine with performance at this price point. If you can live with these issues it's a good bang for the buck. If you can afford to step up in cost and size, I think the G15 probably is a even better deal.

ONLY PROBLEM: Battery runs out really quickly when playing games. I don't have much experience with mainstream games on laptop other than Sims4, but this thing turns into a jet. Really loud and hot when running Sims4 for only a few minutes (FYI I do not use any CC, just a few packs). Still better than other computers that crash though. AMAZING: Love this computer for school too. I'm onto my second year of college with this one and I love it, both it's exterior and interior. Works as a good laptop should. (Purchased Feb 2022)

Never been the first to review anything! I chose this laptop because it had 16gb of ram, 1tb HD, and an RTX 3series GPU. Figured I wouldn't need a webcam, but that might be a turnoff for some buyers. Here are my thoughts. CPU: CPU idles pretty hot, for full time use, a cooling pad would be advised, but the idle temp isn't horrible. Probably not the best for running a ton of tasks when botting, but can easily handle 50-100. It's faster than my 3700x though. Display/Feel: My other laptop is an X1 Carbon intel 8 series. Comparatively, it's got a pretty cheap retro feel to it, nothing metal or carbon fiber, pretty similar to those OG gateway laptops..Overall for workflow, I would say the Lenovo display is much better, this one is a bit small, and the colors stand out more on the Lenovo display, but this machine is much faster, Honestly my eyes cant handle a 4k display at 100% anyways, so If you want the option of more screen REAL estate, i would go QHD, 4k is overkill under 32 inches. NICEHASH: Not worth it. Around 30-35 mh/s, and its not worth the temps, lowest I could get was around 65, but it spiked up to 70, maybe with a cooling pad, i'd consider it. Keyboard: Like that the CTRL key is where it's supposed to be. It's also pretty responsive and nice to type on. Cyberpunk: Ran Cyberpunk on this on the normal display and it ran solid at 1080. No complaints. Interested to see how it would be with a QHD monitor. I was too lazy to plug it into to mine for this review, but i'm sure it wouldn't have much issue. RGB: Limited TLDR Bad: Hot, No Webcam, Poor Hashrate, Smaller Displayer, Cheap feel, on the heavier side, NO RGB Good: Super-fast, can run cyberpunk, responsive keyboard, 1TB HD, enough ram

Heat and noise when using this docked

As a portable gaming laptop nothing comes close to this right now. With that being said, trying to do both means there are compromises on both sides. It outperforms my desktop Ryzen 5 3600 but it does not surpass my desktop GTX 1070. With some tuning I was getting no fan noise and 7ish hours of use on battery. This is pretty good but not as good as other non-gaming laptops. These compromises make sense for the size and components in the machine but it should be something to be aware of. As much as I like the build and performance of this machine I did run into a lot of noise and heat issues when this laptop was plugged into my external monitor. When connected the laptop is forced to use the dedicated graphics card. This makes sense when gaming but it meant there was a LOT of heat and fan noise even when just doing some web browsing. I made sure to select the 'silent' profile and tried to manually tune the GPU to a lower TDP but ultimately GPU temps would climb and force fans to turn on. This meant trying to work with this laptop docked without headphones became very annoying. I was fine with the other compromises for the portability but seeing as I was going to use this docked 50% of the time I had to return this.

This is a great little laptop. I compare this laptop to my high-end specs MacBook Pro 16 and how large the price difference is between them, yet this little one is the beast that will go toe to toe with the MacBook Pro all day. The 16GB is enough for most users. The bad news is that one of the ram sticks is actually part of the motherboard so you can only replace one of them. You can replace the one with a 32gb to make a 40GB ram option, but then the sticks would not match. Just something to keep in mind. I am generally not an AMD fan in any way and the AMD GPU on my Mac is an 8GB VRAM Radeon 5500m and its performance has me wishing for more. I can game with it on the mac running boot camp, but settings are at medium at best. I was hoping to have one laptop that did both, but unfortunately, the Mac has its limitations even on BootCamp. The AMD CPU on this computer has made a believer out of me as far as CPU's go. It is not power hungry and will allow you hours of normal laptop usage. This Asus looks the same as the 2020 version but packs the new 3060 gpu. My wife owns the 2020 version with the 2060 gpu and it too is a little beast. I did my research when she was looking for her own gaming laptop and it worked out so well, I decided to jump in on the Asus bandwagon and get the new 3060 version. I do not regret this purchase. The screen is very nice. The battery life is amazing. The compact design makes it a breeze to carry around. Try it out and you too will understand!

This is a lot of power packed into 14 inches; more than most will ever need. If you want all, if not more; of the functionality and power of a desktop computer in a laptop that you can carry in a backpack, charge in an hour and a half and use for 12-13 (depending on how you customize power savings and what programs you run), handle your most CPU-heavy applications with ease, all while simultaneously looking pretty dang cool; I couldn't recommend this enough. I use this for music composition, 3D modeling, games, editing, and so far it's blown threw everything I've thrown at it like nobody's business. I can also confirm this laptop's infamously high temperatures; this sucker can push upwards of 90-95C under full load, which it's designed to do; but I made some tweaks to knock it down to about 80-85C. It has its drawbacks, of course; it's not quiet at all under load, but that's where the incredible customizability of this computer shines through. It comes with 3 built-in CPU, GPU, and fan profiles; Silent, Performance, and Turbo. You can make a custom profile too. If you're doing something less intensive, you can switch to Silent mode and it's exactly that; silent. But if you're, say; rendering a 3D model, you can bump it up to Turbo mode, it will maximize all the outputs, and while it won't be quiet, and you might just about scald yourself touching the keys; it'll blaze through whatever you're doing like a hot knife through butter. To reiterate: this is not a computer for the faint of heart. This is a weapon for only the greatest of warriors. Do not carry it lightly.

Very good computer, graphics are amazing. Sometimes has issues with programs not responding but overall runs amazing. A lot of people device specific problems that aren’t super common like coil whine, fan issues etc. it is kinda light so it’s okay for traveling. This computer is famous for having high temperatures when gaming but can easily be solved so don’t freak out.

Initially purchased the 2020 version but decided to spend a little more for the 2021 version with the slightly faster processor, GPU, and screen. The biggest update for me was the extended battery life. Best buy reps were friendly and helpful and even transferred my $75 rewards with the exchange. The laptop is really nice, battery lasts a long time and it doesn't get loud or hot under normal load. Mainly use it for work doing web development and what not.

I was skeptical about buying this because of the reviews. But this is one of the high rated gaming laptops you can buy. Its light, powerful, and very good looking. If youre looking to get this laptop, get it. The overheat issue can be solved by disabling boost. Its a super easy fix and i never get temperatures higher than 80 C on max settings. This thing is powerful with a great keyboard. Will recommend

The new G14 hits the sweet spot for price, performance and portability. Its impressive what Asus has achieved here with the design. Its almost like a dream come true for those who want to work and game on a single machine. The RTX 3060 performs close to a desktop 2060 super which is amazing for such a small laptop. The Ryzen 9 5900hs is also very powerful for both single and multi threaded operations and outperforms a 10th gen i9 mobile chip. In certain scenarios, it performs on par with my lab workstation having a Xeon w2265 12 core cpu. The thermal management is good too with temps not exceeding 80c on both cpu and gpu using turbo mode. The nvme SSD has sequential read of 3500 MB/s and write of 2000+ MB/s which is similar to some of the high end ssds out there. The screen looks great even though its not a 100% DCIP3 panel like the G15. Aside internals, the magnesium alloy chassis looks great and well built. The keyboard and touchpad feels good too. Additionally, it has all the necessary IO ports which is hard to find in thin and light laptops these days. I haven’t tested the battery life yet so no comments on that. I expect it to be 10+ hours after reading other reviews. Even with all the good stuff, its far from being a perfect “laptop”. The soldered ram can be a dealbreaker to some as it limits dual channel capability. The fingerprint reader works but can be improved to match today’s standards. There is only a single m.2 slot and an additional one like the G15 would have been great for storage expansion. The lack of camera doesn’t bother me but in today’s day and age, many would prefer to have it. Overall, I would blindly recommend it to anyone who is in search of a decent laptop.

I was looking for a nice gaming laptop under $2,000 and I was super happy when I bought this one! Ryzen 9, 16GB ram, 1TB ssd and a RTX3060 for only $1500. I searched for the best price since Best Buy price matches but I found no one with a lower price! The box it came in is nice and strong, it easy to access the laptop. It only took about 30 minutes to setup and install all the Windows update plus driver updates. It boots up in 12 seconds! The SSD speed is decent, but I will replace with a pci 4 nvme to score fast speeds! The laptop is built well and the weight is not bad. It’s heavier than it looks but it’s all about the quality! The battery life is good with about 8 hours on battery save mode and 2 hours for hardcore gaming in performance mode at 144hz! Very nice battery. Now on to performance. I’ve tossed aome games to test how smooth they run with max settings. The new Myst remake runs at 120FPS With ray tracing on. Cyberpunk runs at 75fps on medium settings but only about 48fps on max. Doom Eternal runs at 60fps on max. Overall, I really like this laptop! It’s not a beast with games, but it runs most at max settings. Buy this, and you won’t be let down.

I have owned a ASUS gaming laptop before and it lasted me almost 4 years (It's still pretty fast but I games on it too much so it cannot handle gaming anymore)! So I have pretty good hopes for this one as well and it did not disappoint me! PROS: - It's so fast. I can open infinite chrome tabs and do not experience a single lag. - Runs games in max settings, great fps - It looks so futuristic, I'm in love with the design and color. CONS: - fans were pretty loud the couple first times I used it, but I have owned it for a week and I don't hear the noises anymore even though I keep my laptop plugged in 24/7. I keep my laptop in silent mode and still able to run all my tasks smoothly (I'm a web dev) - Performance mode will be a bit noisy - MyASUS app: THIS APP IS VERY BUGGY, IT WON'T CONNECT TO MY PHONE. However this is app is like an extra nice thing that goes with the laptop, it is not that important as I can use Google Drive/ One Drive to sync my phone and my laptop. OTHERS: - temperature ranges between 70-75 F in Silent mode and 70-80 F in High Performance mode when playing games. When surfing webs it stays at 63 F

Pretty good laptop with great battery. Laptop is fairly solid for gaming and has a portable size and good specs. It has decent build quality. The touchpad is a little weird and it isn't super high end, but it will be decent for most wanting a decent enough gaming laptop for an affordable price.

Bought as an open box. Did not come with original packaging, but the packing it was in was excellent and the laptop was secure inside of it. The all white color appealed to my eye and gives it a high-end attractive look. The size was a key aspect for me and this was exactly what I was looking for. The speed is impressive. The picture quality is excellent. And I love the backlit keyboard color and the keys themselves. The trackpad is glass and highly accurate. The battery life wasn’t something I really cared too much about when I was shopping for a laptop, but this one has a really good battery. However I don’t do any heavy gaming, but rather streaming and other day to day tasks. So I may not be the best judge for advice on that aspect. The only thing I am really disappointed in is the audio. The sound is crisp and clear, but it’s not very loud. I expected better audio for this being a higher end and gaming laptop. I’ve seen budget laptops with better audio than this one. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would buy this again. Getting it at the price I did for open-box makes it well worth it.

I bought this laptop to do three things. 1) Run a 3D scanner and post process multi pose images. 2) Run Fusion 360 to convert the OBJ files of the scanner to solid bodies used to create molds. 3) Run SolidWorks 2021 and 2022 to do mold creation as well as some motion analysis. This laptop out performs my 16 Gb Ryzen 5 Desktop by at least 50%. Both have SSD's but the Ryzen 9 screams and the very nice 1980 x 1080 display makes Fusion and Solidworks much easier to use. The keyboard backlight is sometimes hard for me to see, but I have gotten used to it. Battery life is at least 1.75 hours, that's as long as I have gone without external power. I did not buy this for battery life, I needed the Ryzen 9 horsepower. If you are gaming, this is a monster machine for that. When running hard, the fans put out some heat. With the display up, the base is somewhat elevated and this lets air flow nicely but you may want to consider an external stand. If you look for a docking station, get one that gives you more USB 3.x ports if it uses one. Eventually I will move to a docking port and stand with full size external mouse and keyboard, I also teach with this laptop and have enjoyed how well the HDMI port works for my power points and the speed of the system in general when teaching.

Great little Machine packs power battery and its really portable nothing better u can ask. If configured properly i can run CP2077 on 60 fps RTX medium If ur looking the middleground between triple AAA games and Video Editing u cant go wrong with this maybe the 32 gb ram variant may make it last longer before u need a new one but this can easily 3 years before replacing.

Excellent upgrade from the 2020 G14 with the RTX 2060 GPU. The previous G14 from 2020 needed a lot of tweaking in order to get the most out of it. Not so with the 2021 revision. Armoury Crate is actually useful now: -Silent mode disables both fans unless the CPU goes over 60 degrees which is great for 2D and office work. -Manual fan curve actually works. Can adjust CPU wattage to cap it lower than 80 watts to send more power to the GPU, which can dynamically boost to 80 watts. This is huge and can greatly help gaming performance. -Can disable the dedicated GPU within Armoury Crate to preserve battery life even further. -The 1TB SSD is significantly faster than last gen, about 3500MBps read, over 2000 write. It is made my Hynix rather than Intel. Have not thoroughly tested battery life yet so can't comment on that. But considering that you can completely disable the 3060 within Armoury Crate, there should be minimal battery drain when unplugged using the integrated GPU compared to the 2020 version. Overall a very solid 2nd gen product, highly recommend for those who want a portable system for work and some games.

The screen is beautiful. It's light. It's pretty. It's powerful! First off, this is the SECOND unit I have bought. The first was operating at high temps under load and I was not a fan. Playing games even the keyboard would be uncomfortably warm beneath my fingers. And the hot spot (between the power and volume keys) was burning my fingers to touch. I was thermal throttling in my games within an hour of playing. CPU was running 94 in lap, 85ish on a cooling pad with max fan speed, under load. This new unit is performing like a dream. I gamed all night - I ran 85 to 89 in my lap, depending on position and how many air vents were obstructed. The keypad never got too hot and the hot spot would occasionally get really hot but my bare legs were fine holding the laptop. A huge change! On the cooling pad, my temps averaged 74-77 in-game for the night. As you can see, there is a ten degree difference! It was well worth the wait to get the second unit. I have a much older ASUS TUF laptop that runs even cooler. It is a 17.3 inch beast. Its fans are L O U D and obnoxious. The G14 fans are a dream! We keep talking about how quiet it is. Of course we can still hear the fans when they kick in, but they aren't obtrusive at all. Love it!

This laptop met all of the characteristics I was looking for when I went to buy it: Modern hardware (3060 and 5900HS certainly fall under that category), good battery life (Two hours of on-battery gameplay), and portable. I don't play a lot of modern, graphically intensive titles; mostly sub sims and older games fill my library with the occasional modern game. I have not yet had a game in my library I couldn't play at 60FPS and maximum settings on the charger. Not even Horizon: Zero Dawn could best this thing. Everything just flies. The keyboard is great, too. While there is no numpad, I don't think a lot of people care about that anymore. The trackpad is *amazing.* I will note there is no webcam, but be honest: Do you actually care about having one? You know you don't. Another important factor is availability: Remember, you can actually buy this thing! The same cannot be said for all other machines. If you're looking for 60FPS at high to max settings in 2019's titles, I think you have no reason to not end your search here. Oh, and it can charge off of 100W USB-C, meaning you don't need a separate cord to charge your phone!

Great laptop strugles with nothing i throw at it. Shut down and start up is faster then you would think it could be . Only problem i have is with how hot it gets but if you use a laptop stand it stays within dafe temp still hot but safe. Exelent fetures to control battery charge rate ect. Only problem that keeps it from getting five stars is that in order to keep the laptop from being loud fans max out at around 40 percent contributing to the heat issues . I would like an option to go atleast 80 percent with the fans when running it hard . And they do give u access to that setting but when u go to save the change it tells you they cant be responsible for it if ypu change setting . This makes me assume they will void warranty if you accept and save the change so i have just left it at the factory settings .
