Barebones, gets the job done
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got sick of being stuck in one room 8 hours a day on my desktop so I bought the laptop to move around more. I use it to run 3 Microsoft Office apps and some light web surfing. Honestly, I think it should be a little cheaper for what it is. The screen has a heavy blueish cast and is not a good example of Asus’s typically high quality. I use the software included with Windows 10 to adjust the warmth, and wear “anti glare computer glasses.” The keyboard is an abomination. I am an expert touch typer (120wpm, typing since I was a small child in 1989) and I still fumble over the keys. I have no idea what they were thinking with the grey lettering on a silver keyboard. If you are struggling, go and get a “keyboard skin” for a 15.6” ASUS laptop from a retailer. It has helped me a ton. I’ve attached an image. Overall, the machine runs pretty quickly and doesn’t get hung up. The SSD is a huge help if you need to get everything up and running ASAP (like taking client calls, recalling data quickly). I haven’t had issues with the fan like a couple of other people.

Great price for a powerful computer!!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.love this computer so far very easy to use. Very light weight but sturdy. Doesn't feel cheap. The only reason i don't give it 5 stars is because of the screen isnt the best. I have Apple everything except laptop and wanted a good strong laptop for a good price so went to this and love everything about it. Speed, ease of use, etc. The screen isnt the best. Apple spoiled me. Sorry

No running issues but I got some gripes
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I haven't experienced any running issues or lagging. It boots up nicely without delay and the speed is sufficient. It took a little getting used to the layout though that is to be expected with any upgrade. As far as functionality, I haven't a single complaint. But when it comes to the cosmetic components, I have a few. First would be the keys. They appear to be cheaply made. I have had 2 get stuck and the control key keeps coming off. Second is the flat back design. Even with its listed feature of the "ErgoLift Hinge" There isn't any elevation from the bottom end to the top end making it a bit more difficult to type. I have to prop something under the top end to give it an offset. Finally, the rubber tabs on the bottom that are designed to keep it from sliding aren't very grippy. There is no grab to speak of and the laptop slides on surfaces freely.

Good value but one major flaw
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited to find a laptop with good specs at this price and also in stock. Nice UI out of the box and very easy set-up. Unfortunately, it has a fatal flaw that makes it unusable for me. The keys on the keyboard are the same color as the case (silver) and the lettering on the keys is very similar. I found that when viewing the keyboard from an angle, the characters virtually disappear! It looks like one of those old training keyboards where all the keys are blank. It's actually even more dramatic than I was able to capture in the pic. If you're not a 100% touch typist and occasionally need to look at the keyboard, this is going to be a problem.

Black Screen
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The laptop is great, but the only flaw it has the black screen. Just 2 weeks of purchase it stopped working and to top it off its my school laptop and I have finals and now I'm stuck with laptop to turn in finals. I hope Best Buy can just exchange it, I don't want a repair after 2 weeks of owning it. Also I had this issue with HP laptops twice and that's one of the reasons why I made the switch. Sorry Asus but you guys need to look into this. Hopefully I have better luck next time.

Looks better on paper than it really is
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you look only at the specs on this machine, you may be tempted to think it's a really good laptop; and based on other Asus models, I would probably agree with you, but this particular model skimps on the basics. It's lacking USB 3.0 ports, it's missing the back-lit keyboard, it doesn't have a fingerprint reader, and worst of all... The screen is terrible! You can see the LED grid on the screen, which is something I've never seen on a laptop before. That's such a shame coming from Asus who makes its living making, wait for it.... Monitors! The reason I mention the little things it's missing, is because Asus includes those things on lower-priced VivoBook models, so why skimp on this one? Because of the larger SSD? Hardly seems like a good deal when you consider how cheap SSDs have become these days.

Phenomenal bang for buck, basic but dependable
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop really deserves a 4.5 star review, but without that option I'm willing to round up because this computer has been an overall extremely positive experience. I can be computer snob, and I've daily driven computers like MacBook Pros and higher-end HP Envies, Dell and Lenovo gaming laptops, and I like to do casual video editing, photo editing, and on/off gaming (on top of the usual heavy load of word processing and in-browser multitasking), so my standards for what I expect out of a computer are fairly high. I came into some hard times during the early days of the pandemic and couldn't afford to keep or replace all my more expensive tech, and I need a computer to use for basic tasks reliably. When this went on sale, I did some quick research and decided to go for it, and I have no regrets. I tend to keep between 4-15 tabs open in chrome at any given time, often while running music or having Libre Office pulled up in the background, and this machine handles it no problem, with very few hiccups or stutters. I also actively run Webroot antivirus and the web extension Honey; no issues. The computer's RAM is upgradeable, and while I'd planned on going to 16gb initially I have never had a need to as the default 8gb keeps up just fine for every day use. I am not a serious gamer anymore, but I still like to play some "older" titles like Civilization III, IV, and V, OG Battlefront 2, Minecraft, Skyrim, and Among Us. Battlefront 2 runs moderately well, but does tend to crash or give me an intermittent black screen I can't seem to fix. As long as I turn down the graphics, Minecraft and Skyrim are perfectly playable and run smoothly. The biggest game I play is a heavily modded Civ6, which does push this computer to it's limit but is nonetheless perfectly playable. Certainly don't buy this laptop with gaming in mind (better gaming machines can be found for a similar price), but the fact that is capable of gaming comfortably is admirable given the $499 I payed for it, and I'm sure if I ever do upgrade the memory that will help a lot. The build quality is cheap, but not bad. It's simple plastic, and feels solid enough all things considered. So long as you don't have a loose grip, you should have nothing to worry about. One advantage to the build materials is that the computer is extremely light and portable. The keyboard has a (cramped) number pad, which is always a feature I appreciate on laptops, and and the keyboard itself is very snappy and clicky, with good travel and comfortable sizing. Not by any means a grade-a keyboard, but far better than most other laptops at a similar price point. I wish it had keyboard backlighting, but that's a minor complaint. 512gb SSD in a laptop at this price is awesome. That's all I have to say about that. A Ryzen 5 at this price is awesome. That's all I have to say about that. My only two major complaints about this computer are the fact that the screen could be better (it's dingy, has terrible viewing angles, and not a touch screen), and that the battery life is lack luster. I average about 5-6hours of screen-on-time, which is not terrible but it's really not good either. At the end of the day, my complaints about this computer begin to carry less weight once you factor in the price. This laptop is reliable, well optimized, has decent heat management, good performance, okay battery-life, a surprisingly good keyboard, and a screen that is....serviceable. It has seen me through some difficult times, and has proved itself to be a consistent and dependable machine that I would easily recommend to anyone looking for a decent computer on a limited budget. It's worth saving up for a higher quality machine if you are making a long term investment, plan on doing any photo/video editing, or want a computer for gaming. But in a pinch, on a budget, or for basic utility, I can't recommend this enough.

Very good for the price
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was cautious because of the so-so reviews, but I'm happy with this laptop. Pros: Thin and lightweight, good screen size, nice keyboard, decent camera. Speed seems pretty good during start-up and operation. Nice styling and great price. Based on my research, it looks like it's pretty easy to upgrade. Cons: Negative reviews mention the screen (contrast, viewing angles, etc). It's fine for me, but I can understand why others might be dissatisfied. The type A ports are all 2.0. Every once in awhile, the track-pad is momentarily non-responsive, which is my only real concern over the long run. Other comments: Battery life seems OK, but there have been a couple times when I've been surprised that it's needed a charge. The charger is nice and compact, though - great for travel. The grey letters on the grey keyboard are not a problem for me. In low light, the screen illuminates the keyboard enough for sufficient legibility. Given the specs and price, this is looking like a very good value. It's going to be a back-up and travel laptop for me, so I'm fine with some compromises. I've had good luck with ASUS laptops, so I'm expecting it will work out over the long-term.

Great computer for the price
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall this is a great laptop, especially at the price point. The screen size is good. Large enough to be able to operate two windows but not too large to the point that the laptop is cumbersome to move around. Screen clarity is good and has an anti-reflective finish to it. Some other reviews complained about the screen but honestly for the price you aren't going to get a 4k monitor on this laptop. When watching Netflix or other video media the picture is good. Speed wise the laptop seems to perform well. Doesn't have issues with booting up and is generally pretty quick. This laptop effortlessly handles normal tasks such as using Microsoft Office, browsing the internet, or completing school work. Handles games well considering it uses integrated graphics. My only real complaints/dislikes with the laptop are associated with the keyboard. The keyboard has no back-lighting which means you can really only use it in a light environment. This wouldn't be such a big deal but to top it off the keys are silver with another shade of silver for the lettering. It can be a bit difficult to see the lettering even in optimal lighting conditions because of this.

Worth Taking A Look
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What I like: 1. RAM: 8gb of ram, don't even bother with 4gb of ram only get laptops with 8gb or higher 2. Speed: Its snappy, if you keep the system clean, away from junk programs, and other nonsense it will stay speedy 3. Display: This depends on user preference, it has anti-glare covering so its not super crisp. However it's not as bad as some folks make it out to be. If you plan on using this system in combination with a HD display and wireless keyboard plus mouse its not even a concern. Note: some folks use laptops as a small footprint computer instead of getting a desktop in case you were wondering. 4. OS: comes with Normal Windows 10, and not Win 10 S mode. Its not a big deal to switch S Mode to normal win 10, but its one less step. What I don't like: 1. Ram / Bios: you have 8gbs of Ram, system is only using 5.24 or something around that amount. Because the Graphic card uses some of the ram. Problem is there's no place in the BIOS to change it, computer is still snappy with the 5.24 but I would rather have the 12gb version of this laptop if I cant change the BIOS setting. 2. Keyboard: needs darker key letters, backlighting is not a big deal to me for a laptop at this price, but Silver on even lighter silver keyboard is just a bad idea. Final Thought I believe this laptop would be a good purchase for basic usage, for folks with realistic expectations. Also great if you plan on using it as a small footprint computer, with wireless keyboard, mouse, and monitor. This only has Wifi, I like the option of wifi and wired connection. This laptop had no issues connecting but just imagine if something happen with wifi and you don't have the option to connect wired. Its not a deal breaker but something to keep in mind. As for me im returning this laptop not because of anything negative. But I rather have (12gb of Ram, and Ethernet port) Giving 3 stars for average

Great Laptop For Productivity and Gaming.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is great. The specs are wonderful for the price not to mention the sale that is currently happening. This laptop is able to maintain a steady 60fps on casual games and can run up to 65-90 depending on the settings. It comes with a Ryzen 5 processor which is good for the price and probably the best you could find for a computer like this. It has decent graphics and the keyboard is pretty smooth. Honestly despite the case being non metal it still feels durable and high quality. I would highly recommend this laptop to people who want to game and also be productive with office or school work.

The Howling Fan of Torture
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is great for getting online coursework DONE. Have any required lockdown browsers or coding applications to download with no hassles? This laptop is the one. The screen is okay, I would describe it as "matte." You have to have it at a certain angle in order to see the best color and less glare which is annoying, but you get used to it. The front-facing camera has really good picture quality. No "S-mode." The keyboard doesn't light up if you're concered about that. One thing nobody is mentioning tho is THE LOUD FAN!!! Wanna check your email? BBBBRRRRRRR!!!! Wanna watch Reveal by The Boyz on YouTube?? BBBBRRRRRRRRRR!!! Oh, you wanna play mope.io (yes an io game) BBBBBRRRR BBBBRRRRR!!!! IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY! I hate the fan so much, it gets so loud for no reason even when I'm doing things that shouldn't be making it get louder and louder. If I would have known it'd be this loud I would've never bought this laptop. I was hoping on using this as my main but honestly, my Chromebook R11 is faster and by far quieter than this. It's a bit heavy so watch out if you're thinking about taking this everywhere you go. Games like Leauge of Legends work on this but if you don't want the fan to disrupt your gameplay, then you gotta have ALL the lowest settings, which I expected since this isn't made for gaming *cough* plus all the other things I mentioned above *cough*. I was expecting more quality out of this laptop so I'm pretty dissapointed. Overall, it's an okay laptop, gets the important stuff done.

Posted .Dear aFellowTheBoyzFan,
Do understand your concern about the fan noise. It is normal for the fan to spin at full-throttle and generates noise louder than normal while the laptop is under heavy load like gaming, especially during the initial WINDOWS setup and WINDOWS Update installation.
Also, the fan noise will be louder while antivirus software or malware are running continuously in the background. Please do a system scan to ensure the laptop was not compromise by viruses or malware. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full-throttle and noise will be louder than normal. It does decreases or normalizes once utilization goes down.

Great Laptop!
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a very good experience using this laptop. Though when I tilt the screen a certain way, I can't see the graphics very well, but overall, the laptop has been very fast and loads everything very smoothly. The games I tried have also all loaded very well as well with no lagging! I definitely recommend this laptop for any college student who needs it for hw and some short game and relaxation time. The movies and tv shows are also very HD as well!

A step above Chromebook. Perfect for me.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I gave this 5 stars because when you marry the price (watch for sale) with 512 SSD and 8GB memory, you get excellent. My last laptop was Asus and it it worked great for 5 years. In fact, it's still running fine but the replacement battery I got online is a dog and I figured I'd best make a purchase of a new one. I use my laptop for work and shuffling documents, along with some audio editing and surfing the web. For about the price of a nice Chromebook, I got a fully functional laptop. It's nice to get SSD and 8 gig of ram. You can pay a couple hundred more and get touchscreen or a good graphics card. This is all I use since I lean on an iPad for a lot other things. One thing to note is if you haven't shopped laptops in awhile, the newer thing is the battery isn't easily replaceable like older models. You can't just order one and pop it in yourself. It can be replaced but with a higher skill level. I believe it's to encourage you to just buy a new laptop. Also, most don't come cd drives any more, but for $30 you can get an external drive, which is what I did. This is a good purchase if you're looking for a basic laptop. Again, don't pay full price though. Best Buy sales are legit and I appreciate that. They don't mark up to mark down. Watch for sales that weave in and out during a week. Hope this helped.

Good value
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good value at $500 sale price point. Powers up fast. Quite lightweight. Camera is great for Zoom. But those no-contrast keys make typing in low light impossible. Num keypad has odd zero offset. I keep hitting the decimal point. (I'd like a Num Lk indicator light ) & I'd like the touchpad to have a bigger "sweet spot". I'm always thinking I've hit the scroll area, & - no.

Does the job
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The WebCam image quality is quite low. The lettering on the keyboard is just a slightly different color from the background keys. So, you will want some light source on the keys... or be a really good touch-typist. I am not crazy about the screen either. I need to crank the brightness almost up to full. But I am getting old. Otherwise, it is very light but seems to have pretty good battery life. Quite fast owing to the SSD and being new tech. It plays minecraft very well. Have not tested other games yet. Daughter is using for distance learning.

||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very great laptop, a little tricky to maneuver if you’re buying your first or second laptop but other than that it’s very effective and fast. Probably one of the best laptops I’ve gotten so far, only thing that isn’t convenient is the keyboard. The keyboard has gray shiny lettering that matches the actual laptop itself that you can only see if you’re under light but other than that it’s a great laptop and hasn’t failed to please me.

Works great for virtual learning.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With Covid and partial virtual learning, my son needed a laptop; however, because he just needed it in certain settings, we didn’t want to buy a really expensive one because he has a nice desktop. Due to the shortage of laptops from Covid, we were somewhat limited in our selection. We found this one with good specs for a reasonable price and fast shipping. He’s been using it for 2.5 months and really likes it. He says it “works great!” We purchased a separate camera with a mic for the times he needed it.
