BAD IDEA! REALLY!

This is my first product review, EVER! That should give you an indication of how utterly deplorable this product is. I am here to save you from making the same mistake I made.
Intended Use: I purchased this PC about 6 months ago for a basic computer that my 11 year old daughter could do her homework with. ...and perhaps run Sims 4. Easy as pie, right? WRONG!
My Background: I have owned ASUS products since I built my first PC in 1995. I thought to myself, "This is a really great price for an ASUS product! I bet this thing could last a few years, at least, for what I need it to do." WRONG AGAIN!
Where are we now?: The laptop was just returned from BBY Geek Squad for having to have the battery reseated (aka, plugged back in). We (myself AND Geek Squad - 4 people) couldn't even get the case open in-store. So far, I have spent 3.5 hours attempting to uninstall the "bloatware" loaded on this machine (unexpected and VERY disappointing for an ASUS product). By the way, the "bloatware" is so terrible, you will have to uninstall almost everything to even get the machine to boot reliably. Nothing like your little girl telling you she's the only one in class who's computer won't turn on and allow her to log into Google Docs to do her group work! SERIOUSLY!
Where are we going?: I have already purchased my daughter a better laptop. There are MANY laptops in the $300-$350 range that will: 1) be considerably more reliable, 2) be WAY more powerful, 3) be touch screen, 4) be expandable (ram isn't upgradable on this model - I knew that at the time of purchase), 5) not require half a day to uninstall "bloatware." So, I really have no idea what I'm going to do with this hunk of junk. It really does NOTHING well, or even acceptably...
What would make me happy?: I believe that Best Buy, as a multi-billion dollar corporation, has the ability to make me a satisfied customer by RETURNING MY MONEY! I have already purchased a $1000 Lenovo for my personal use from Best Buy, and I'm a fiercely loyal customer, something rare in today's market. (I know, I was a Best Buy manager for years, and I hold stock in the company. Hehe.)
Bottom Line: Put a little more money into your laptop purchase to avoid tremendous headaches! This product is absolutely worthless, at any price, for any application! If you're giving this to a person as a gift, I hope you have the time and patience to troubleshoot for them CONSTANTLY! (I know this looks like a good option for the kids and perhaps an older family member that isn't particularly tech-savvy. I assure you, it is not.)
For the techie folks: The formfactor for this machine has been in use for nearly a decade. Someone must have purchased way too many of the low-end screens and ASUS thought, "Well, let's make some really cheap laptops to move this product instead of taking a loss." I have had a dozen motherboards from ASUS without a single problem. I would certainly recommend their products... EXCEPT THIS ONE! Less the hard drive, there is zero expandability for this machine (just in case you did your homework and thought this might be one of the other "versions" of the 540...)
Anyhow, I hope the time spent writing this review prevents some of you from making the same mistake that I made. Cheers, friends!

I purchase this laptop for work and as a streaming device. It works as intended, battery life is about 4-5 hours. The display screen could be better, but for a budget laptop it is what it is. I only had the internet hiccup once or twice since I've owned and nothing that is terribly bad.
Overall it is a good laptop if you can get it on sale.

It was an amazing laptop until about 2 months in... It just started completely dropping internet and randomly freezing.. Brought it to Geek Squad twice and they were only able to temporarily fix it both times. I just dropped it off a week ago and it stopped working multiple times for them so they had to ship it out to Asus.. I wont be getting it back for another 2-3 weeks. If I even get it back, they may have to replace it and I really do not want this laptop again. I have never done anything other than school work on this so its very upsetting that I spent money on something that cant even handle my every day needs.

This laptop is a basic entry level no frills laptop. It does have a HDMI slot though and that's a bonus. It isn't the fastest laptop but it's decent; and the price for what you get is well worth it.

Good for everyday personal use. Email, creating word docs, spreadsheets, etc.
Just don't try to do too much multitasking, it really starts slowing down when you get to 3 windows or more open at one time.
Also slows down when running more than one desktop (Windows 10 feature).

Awfully slow. I should have listened to the best buy guy at the camelback location, the one with the tattoos on his arrm. I forgot his name, but he told me when I first bought it, i would hate it. I should have listened.

I was conned into this purchase by a fast talking Best Buy salesman. It was the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. Even the case was falling apart within a couple of years. It lasted less than 3 years. I still have a Dell desktop that was custom built in 2001, and it works great. I would not buy an ASUS product ever again. I've gone back to HP, always reliable.

This is an all around okay laptop. It is slow when loading/running multiple windows or items. For word processing and basic internet usage it is fine.

I really enjoy the price tag on this laptop the computer is fast and responsive and light enough it won't weigh down my backpack for school. I love Asus as a brand, and own other Asus laptops, gaming series, so this is fefinetly a welcomed change. Great for students.

Bought this computer on June 16th of 2016, from day one the built in WiFi has been intermittently losing connection for no apparent reason, have tried resetting the driver multiple times and the only fix is to shut off the computer and restart it. The disc drive has always been extremely noisy and after just under six months has completely failed. The disc drive will no longer open at all and makes grinding noises when you hit the eject button on the tray. I contacted asus, as its still under the one year warranty, and they told me that best buy is an authorized service provider and that they would handle the manufacturers warranty in the store. I took it in to the geek squad and was told they only handle software issues and could not fix it, it would have to be sent in to Asus. Now I have to pay for return shipping and send the computer back to the manufacturer for repairs. Do not buy this piece of junk and definitely do not expect any help from best buy or geek squad as they are only capable of performing simple command prompt repairs that anyone could easily figure out from a simple Google search. This product and service is a complete joke.

WARNING do not buy this laptop. I would give it no stars if possible. One of the slowest laptops ever made. Since day 1 it has been sluggish, crashes frequently, does not hold a charge. SO MANY PROBLEMS. ASUS customer support sucked when I called and BestBuy refused to take the item back even on day 30 of the return period. Now i'm stuck with a computer that is complete garbage. NEVER buy ASUS.

I got this computer for college and so far it reaches the basic requirements well. It's good for writing papers, e-mail, and browsing video. If, however, you want to use this for something like intensive video editing or gaming, you won't be able to do that. The battery life is relatively okay, but I usually keep the charger nearby. The only thing that I have been upset about is the fact that a screw did fall out of the casing of the computer randomly one night. All in all, it's a decent laptop for light use.

I was able to get this for 250.00, but I was able to get a break. They had one left and my old computer died and was in a panic. I called my local Best Buy and asked the guy to find me the cheapest laptop he could find that would render small video and stream video. I have had this computer a few months and I have to say for the price you can't go wrong, you can even play dvds on it. The computer has gone far beyond what I was asking him to find me.

Terrible Battery Life

We bought this laptop based off of the 4 star rating, and because our last laptop was an ASUS. This laptop battery life is very low. It will only last about an hour before we have to charge it. It also runs slower than our last ASUS. I wouldn't buy this model laptop if I had it to do all over again.
