Better For Me Than an Inkjet

Bought this to replace an inkjet as I don't print frequently enough and the ink would keep drying out, clogging the heads. This laser was perfect for me as I'm still on the starter toner more than a year after purchase. I can't print photos anymore, but I barely did that so I don't mind the loss. It's noisier and larger than an inkjet, but I just cover it with blanket when not in use and it's not too noticeable. It's much faster at printing and scanning than my old printer, and I love being able to quickly scan multiple pages with the feeder. Never have any connectivity issues with it either.

This product will enhance how your streamline your work whether you use it for education or your job. The quality of the print job is excellent and the speed of scanning makes it one of the best I’ve ever used. The only downsides are the size and weight of this machine and it can be a challenge to recalibrate once it goes off the WiFi connection.

After a year it is still printing on demand!

Five Stars. I have been wanting a printer that prints on demand rather then go through a long warm up making ridiculous sounds and then after thoroughly aggravating me printing a poor quality image. This printer prints immediately after hitting the print button even via wi-fi. The toner cartridges are expensive but last a long time. The print quality is great. This was one of my better purchases.

Good quality and features but big and bulky

I was looking for a home printer/scanner to replace inkjet all-in-one device. My usage is pretty limited. I scan few letters a month (to save for my records in digital format) and print few pages per month. With inkjet, the low usage caused the ink to dry and clog the print head, therefore I was looking for laser. The quality of the device was very good for my needs. Configuring and using the printer/scanner was easy. A con for this specific model is that the scanner is simplex only, however there are freeware software available that can merge it to duplex. As I don't scan many 2-sides pages documents often, this extra hassle was not a deal breaker. I got the printer at Black Friday, at very good price, so I was willing to compromise on the simplex scan. The deal breaker for me was the size and weight of the printer. It is very heavy and big comparing to inkjet all-in-one and also comparing to some other compact laser all-in-one. As I don't have a home office, it was very bulky so I ended up returning it. For one that has room for big device and ok with simplex scanning, it seems like very good choice, specially at Black Friday prices.

Won't perform duplex scanning or copying

BEWARE. Don't assume a duplex printing all in one will do duplex scanning or copying. I learned a valuable lesson that, apparently, even the Canon corporate sales staff does not know. I needed a mid to high range duplex all in one for a cross country move. Went to Best Buy to see what they had. Came across the Canon MF642Cdw at a very competitive sale price for an all in one with duplex printing. I assumed that as it did duplex printing you could run a two sided original through the feeder and it would print out a two sided copy. Wrong! This model requires that you flip the original on the glass platen and return the first page of the copy to the paper tray in order to print out a copy of the other side. Way too much time and effort if you're doing any kind of two sided volume copying. It was only until I spoke with Canon Tech Support that I learned duplex printing and duplex scanning/copying are two different functions and duplex copying will require a higher end all in one. I went back to Best Buy and they graciously accepted the return of the MF642Cdw and I paid the difference to upgrade to a Canon MF743Cdw. The 743 was also on sale and had the capability to perform duplex scanning/copying, through the feeder, in addition to duplex printing. Both the 642 and the 743 have excellent black and white printing as well as color. They are also quite fast. If you don't need duplex copying you should be quite pleased with the 642, especially if Best Buy has it at the very aggressive sale price. Buying electronic products can be quite the adventure. Best Buy understands this and I very much appreciate their flexibility in accepting the return and allowing me to exchange for the product that best meets my needs. Thank you, Best Buy.

    Excellent Laser Printer/Scanner/copier

Bought this printer on sale for $249.99. Excellent color and black print quality. Very fast. Easy to install. No issues at all with this printer while using at home except for one. It is connected to an office computer that I am borrowing from my office while working from home and for some reason, my office network will not allow me to download the MFP driver to use the scanner. It seems to be a network issue rather than a printer issue, but we could not use the disk to download the software. We had to download the printer driver from the internet which allows me to print but not to operate the scanner. One final good note, although purchased during quarantine received it in 2 days. Very happy with the purchase even with the current scanner issue. Giving it 4 stars rather than 5 based upon the issue with scanning.

Great printer but will not connect automatically. Every time I want to print something I have to “wake” the printer before it will operate. I’ve never owned a printer before that did not connect automatically. Prints fast and fantastic quality!

Solid Printer Despite WiFi Connection Issues

Purchased the Canon MF642CDW to replace my Epson 840 Workforce Printer which was coming on close to 10 years old. I wanted a printer that can do everything that my Epson could do, but at a better print quality which led me to this MF642CDW. Despite some struggles with connectivity, overall I'm happy with purchase especially since I purchased it on sale. I use it for home use and items the kids need to print or scan since they are doing home schooling during covid. So what I would consider light - medium printing and scanning needs, it works out great especially compared to my old Epson inkjet. The printing and scanning in terms of quality and speed is far superior to my old Epson. The touch screen panel is a nice item as well. There's some things that are intuitive and other things such as I need to see and double check the signal strength (more to that later) which are hard to find and get too. What's preventing a 5 star review is the connectivity issues with this printer when done via WiFi on home network. To put it bluntly, there isn't much range on this printer if you want it to consistently print. I have 7 devices hooked up to the printer which include a Chromebook, Windows Desktop Computer, Windows Laptop, Apple Iphone, Apple Ipad, and 2 android devices. At first some of the new devices were able to print but the older devices were only able to print some of the times, I figured it was some kind of configuration issue because they were older devices. Then when my new devices would print only some of the times, that's when I started to try to problem solve. Long story short, I moved the printer so that it was essentially 5 feet from the router and now all the devices started to print. I purchased a WiFi range extender and set it up back at the old location with the WiFi range extender right next to the printer... same on and off printing issues again. And yes, I did configure the range extender with the same SSID so the whole house is on the same "network". So again, long story short, I had to move the printer back so that it was 5 feet from the router so that all devices can print to it regardless of which network (router or extender) the various devices were on. Not sure why it works one way vs the other, but it seems like a Canon issue and not a "me issue", so I'm knocking off a star for that. But overall now that connectivity issue is "solved" it's been a solid printer and scanner.

We bought this for its features and price. It will be used in a small business environment . We have had it with ink cartridges that need replacement often. The toner allows us to focus on the important things. The prints in color or black and white are crisp and clear. Set-up was simple and quick. It is HEAVY...around 50 lbs. Easy to read screen and it also does two sided copying which reduces our paper usage. Came with a software cd......who has a cd anymore?

I have always wanted a laser printer, but didn’t have much use for one since I don’t print much. I had been using inkjet for years, but now that my wife is a teacher she prints lots of worksheets and other documents. This Canon fit all the requirements we needed for her and it’s been great so far! Tons of print capacity (cartridges), great quality, easy to use, and it was on sale! Only downside to consider as with all laser printers, is size and weight. Make sure to have a sturdy table to set it. I highly recommend for large print jobs.

I have owned this printer / scanner for 2 months now and I am very impressed. The print quality is far superior to ink jet and there are no nozzles to clog. The prints are not quiet photo quality but I wouldn't be embarrassed to hand them out. What is just as striking is how well the scanner works. It is very quick and captures details with high fidelity. You can setup custom scan jobs for scans you need to do routinely (I have one set for expenses) and then you can just press a button on the touch-screen and off it goes. Makes scanning a breeze. If you are on the fence about going with laser vs inkjet, the laser is the way to go.

This Canon MF642 laser printer also scans and faxes (we don't fax) and has been fast and reliable for our home office needs. The only issue we have is the interface with the wifi systems and how the machine gets identified by the router. With 2 machines in 2 locations, the instructions are not clear for either the online manual or the LED screen on where to find things like connection names, network information (devices, etc) and when printing wirelessly: how to get to the default settings like which paper tray. When printing wirelessly you always have to select a different paper tray than the one the machine wants to use (which is a single feed, so it goes into error mode if you are not looking at it) But overall both machines have performed well once we got used to the wireless idiosyncrasies.

DO NOT BUY! The driver/software is complete garbage. The computer/printer connection is broken when the printer goes to sleep. It has to be reconfigured at random because it won't talk to computer. The touchscreen menus were programmed by a drunk on a bender. It will also power up/down at completely random times. So, if your printer is sitting anywhere near human habitations, prepare to live with the sound of the printer making like its going to print at utterly random times of the day and night. However, if you can live with all of that (and you will need the patience of a saint), the print quality is great.

this printer is about as good as you're going to find for a home color laser printer at a reasonable price. setup was easy, print quality is good. I have it in my concrete basement so I can't speak to wifi printing until i get a signal booster. i save things to a flash drive and plus that into the printer. my only complaint is that (unless i'm missing something) the printer will only print PDFs. it doesn't even see Word docs in the flash drive when i plug it in.

I did a lot of research and comparison and finally decided to go with this Canon laser over an inkjet. I wanted a color printer that wouldn't break the bank. This is a good option. It is a bit loud, but that's ok. It prints nicely and is fast.

I bought this model because it was described as an all-in-one with one-pass duplex scanning. I found out this sub model does not duplex scan at all (not one pass and not two pass). Other machines, like the HP don’t have two sensors but they will flip the page mechanically and scan the other page. For that reason, i would avoid this machine if you plan to scan. This machine also does not have fax functionality, so you can’t receive or send faxes over a pots line. I also find this machine is very noisy, not just when printing but any time it wakes up. For some reason, the scan head needs to reposition every time you touch the screen, whether or not you touch a scan or copy button. Another irritation is the 100 sheet paper cassette and lack of support for a second tray. I think a printer should support at least 250 sheets. Also the software and configuration web page are the opposite of intuitive or user friendly. The categories don’t make sense and functions are not where you expect them to be. To set up a folder to scan to, for example, you have to go to the address book. One thing this machine does well is print color text and graphics (but not pictures). Color text and graphics do come out sharp and clear, and the print speed is reasonable. Don’t buy this if you need to print clear looking pictures, however. I think for pictures an inkjet does a much better job. Also if you care about the feel of the materials this machine does feel a little cheap and flimsy, but it is at the low end of the scale, so that’s expected to some extent.

The Canon image Class MF642Cdw wireless Color All-In-One Laser Printer has a good printout quality, printing speed at 22 PPM is good for office and home office using. It is easy to set up printer and connect the WiFi for wireless printing. Color touch panel is nice, and easy to use. The best thing is this printer can scan and print both side. The price for this two sided printer is very good.
