    Best Zoom Lens Bar None

The RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM is the best zoom lens hands down. Having double the light gathering capability of the 24-70 f/2.8 is only the beginning of the advantages of this lens. The versatility of a zoom lens with the characteristics of a prime lens at different focal lengths is absolutely delightful. The dynamic range and the sharpness are also unmatched for a zoom lens. Being able to shoot wide open at f/2 aperture and retain incredible sharpness is fantastic. Stopping the aperture down to f/2.8 to f/5.6 will yield just a touch more sharpness, however wide open at f/2 it is still sharper than any other zoom lens in it’s class that I’ve found. Additionally, this lens has given me some of the most pleasing and beautiful sun bursts I’ve experienced from a lens, as well. This also can potentially replace your need for prime lenses, such as the 24mm (almost), 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, and (maybe) 85mm. Unless you are needing a faster lens, such as a 1.2 or 1.4, this lens will cover all those focal lengths. Plus not having to carry any or all of those lenses makes this a savings in weight for carrying around and space in your pack. The obvious downside of the lens is the size and weight. The lens itself is simply big and heavy, but with the potential to lighten your carrying load overall, as outlined above. The weight of the lens is a non-issue for me as I hand-carried my R6 with this lens attached to it all day, walking around and hiking without issue, but it is something that others should take into consideration. It is a big, big lens. Also, the front filter size is 95mm, which means buying UV filters, ND filters, CPL filters are also more expensive. Overall, if you are really in the market for a zoom lens in the range of 24-70 or 28-70, I would give this a serious consideration as you will be getting a phenomenal lens.

My baby in lens form! LOVE this lens, it is versatile & easy to use. It is my go to lens for just about everything. Well worth the price. I will say it is quite heavy but you don’t realize the weight of it in the moment of shooting. It creates beautiful images to work with. The pouch to keep it in & lens hood are just a bonus.

A fantastically versatile lens. I used this in Iceland and was able to leave my 35mm and 50mm prime lenses at home. The lens is unique as it offers an aperture of 2.0 throughout the 28-70 range and is sharp wide open. It’s pricey but worth the expense. The only con is that it is on the heavier side.

    A True Game-Changer – Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L Review

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L is nothing short of phenomenal. As someone who shoots both portraits and events, this lens has completely elevated my workflow. The constant f/2 aperture across the zoom range is a dream—it delivers beautiful background separation and low-light performance that rivals primes. Image quality is razor-sharp from edge to edge, even wide open. The colors, contrast, and clarity are classic Canon L-series quality—rich and vibrant. The bokeh is smooth and creamy, making it perfect for portraiture, and the versatility of the focal range means I can cover wide to short telephoto without ever changing lenses. Yes, it’s a bit hefty, but that’s a small trade-off for what you get in return. It feels solid, professional, and incredibly reliable. Autofocus is fast and accurate, and paired with an R-series body, it’s a powerhouse for both stills and video. In short, this lens is a workhorse with the image quality of a prime and the flexibility of a zoom. If you’re serious about your photography, the RF 28-70mm f/2L is absolutely worth the investment.

Wow! Been a long time canon shooter. When I switched to the mirrorless models I kept some ef lenses and got a rf27-70f4. Never loved it and always went back to the ef 24-70 with adapter for that f2.8. I finally took the plunge and got this 28-70 and omg! Fast, crisp images with dreamy results all the way to 2.0. It’s a big lens…heavy and not one for me to do a fast lense swap but who needs to swap when this is now the workhorse lens. In Studio and on location!

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM is a groundbreaking lens that redefines what a standard zoom can do. With a constant f/2 aperture throughout its zoom range, this lens delivers the image quality of prime lenses with the versatility of a zoom—a dream combination for professionals and serious enthusiasts alike. Expensive (premium lens with a premium price)

If you're hesitating between the 24-70 and the 28-70.. stop, close your eyes and take a deep breath... open, and buy this one. You will NOT regret purchasing the 28-70. As a concert photographer, and someone who loves prime lenses. This lens DOES IT ALL. There is a noticeable separation from subject and background at f/2 vs f/2.8. It is a heavy lens but anyone who has shot old EF glass / DSLR really wont notice a massive difference. I've shot video on this as well thinking I would get better footage from the 24-70 because of the IS, and I was surprised to noticed the IBIS from my R6 provided an unnoticeable difference between the two. The only thing you may have to take into consideration is gimbal max weight, if you're running a cheaper gimbal, you might not be able to balance it as well with the 28-70 vs the 24-70. I also have a 15-35mm so the loss of "24-28mm" really isn't a big deal to me. This is the ultimate every day carry lens. Landscapes, Animals, Concerts, Events, Portraits. This lens can do it all! I am incredible happy with this lens and have zero buyers remorse after using the 24-70mm and 28-70mm back to back.

Great lens! I was nerves if f2 would be good enough for me. I feel like it kind of is. The reason to kind of, if you have a 35mm 1.4 and take a picture with a wide lens like 35mm, it won't look as blurry. Same with this. At 70mm, you do get more bulky than 28mm. I do like the overall look it gives and sharpness. I still want the RF 85mm f1.2 if Bestbuy wants to hook it up. I'd recommend the lens! Wait! Also, this lense is HUGE! I don't care much about it but it really is. 95mm tall mug cup looking with cream on it. Lol

This lens is incredible!! I cannot say enough good things about the 28-70. I use this lens paired with my Canon R6 for mostly wedding and portrait photography. The auto focus is wicked fast, the photos are always tack sharp, and the bokeh is very beautiful. I’ve always preferred prime lenses. I was unsure if this lens would be good enough to replace the need to carry around multiple prime lenses in my camera bag, but I’m happy to say it did!! This is my go to lens for all my professional client work! I will say I do not recommend this lens for travel because of the size. *The photos I attached are not straight out of camera they have been edited in post

This is the best lens I own. I like the versatility of a kit lens and the ability to shoot at F2 all the way through. On the flip side, this thing is heavy and does not have image stabilization! It will be tough shooting weddings or any shoot that will be upwards of an hour.

I am writing a review after 1 year of use. Very fast autofocus, beautiful bokeh, the picture is quite bright with an open aperture, thanks to the zoom it is universal and irreplaceable, I am very happy with it, but there is one significant drawback - its weight, it is VERY heavy, after 3-5 hours of shooting my hands shake. Therefore, I will take another lighter one, most likely 35 mm.

This is a beautiful lens and convenient for shooting weddings and events due to the zoom. Photos are fantastic and the 2.0 is clutch. However, it isn’t as fast as my primes and misses focus more frequently. I’d give it 5 stars if it could keep up.

The MOST EXPENSIVE lens for the RF system (so far)

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L is the MOST EXPENSIVE lens for the RF system as of February 2021, but it's unlike any other lens out there and I'm loving it on the EOS R5 as a still image photographer (who does a little video on the side). I've been slowly replacing my EF lenses with RF lenses. I started with the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS, then the RF 85mm f/2 IS, then the RF 50mm f/1.8. I will eventually get the Canon "L-series" versions of those lenses, but started with these first because they are the most affordable and a really great value. After saving up for my first "L-series" RF lens I debated between the RF 85mm f/1.2L and this RF 28-70mm f/2L as they're both similar in price. I've been using the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L (version 2) with the EF-RF control-ring lens adapter and really didn't "need" to upgrade in terms of quality and function. But I planned to eventually replace my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L (version 2) with either the RF 28-70mm f/2L or the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS. Because the EOS R5 has IBIS (in-body image stabilization) I didn't mind the lack of Image Stabilization on the RF 28-70mm and the only thing left to consider was the difference between 24mm and 28mm on the wide end. I'll likely get the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L to replace my EF 16-35mm f/2.8L. Because this lens is "almost" the equivalent of carrying f/2 primes, it can "virtually" take the place of my EF 28mm f/1.8, RF 35mm f/1.8, RF 50mm f/1.8, and at 70mm it's close to the RF 85mm f/2. The versatility of this lens is incredible, but it comes at a cost in terms of size, weight, and expense. If you don't mind the size/weight of this lens and can justify its expense then it's absolutely worth purchasing. This lens feels really great when using it and I like how the zoom ring moves slowly and smoothly. There is a zoom-lock but I don't think I'll ever need it because there's not really any lens-creep with this lens. I've attached a picture comparing the size of this lens next to the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L (version 2) with the EF/RF control-ring lens adapter. Possible negatives: If you don't want a heavy lens, then this is not the lens for you. It's a girthy hunk of glass! If you don't want the expense of 95mm filters, this might not be the lens for you.

This lens is incredible and sharp throughout the zoom range. It is really like having three primes in one with the F2 aperture. Paired with my R5, the images are sharp with beautiful bokeh. As many other have stated, it is quite heavy. This does not bother me, but may bother others. The price is also up there, but for what you are getting in one package, and for the quality, it is worth every penny!

This lens replaces main primes (28/35/50 and 70mm), but it is not comfortable for walking in the park with family. My sugestion is to buy rf 50mmf 1.8 for everyday use. Rf 28-70 f2.0 is sharp and fast, but huge and heavy. Overall it’s amazing lens.

I’m still learning to explore its full potentials! Since it’s a heavy and a bit complicated lens I have been practicing more and more to get used to with it! Overall I’m completely satisfied with this lens quality for my purpose. I would strongly recommend people to buy it, if you are really really looking to have portrait photography in both indoor and outdoor anytime.
