The Cobra – MicroTALK Radios are a perfect solution for the need for immediate conversations within a conservative radius. Setting up the radios is easy. Install the batteries and set radios into the charging cradles. Just over an hour later, they are fully charged and are ready to go. One of the first places that I got to use the MicroTalk Radios was on top of a bank as I was trying to rescue a scared cat that was stuck on the roof. The VOX setting allowed me to use my radio hands-free instead of putting my phone on speaker and sticking in a pocket (which muffles voices). The radio clipped to my vest and transmitted my voice each time I talked to my partner on the ground without having me to put down the rescue net in order to press the talk button. The radios seem to be built sturdy for those bumps and accidental drops from a short height. And the clips that attach to your belt or lapel have a relatively tight grip so they won’t be slipping off your persons. I can see these being used if you’re hiking with the family and want to give the kids some ‘space’ but want to stay in contact with them without the need of using a smartphone that will either be a distraction or might not have a signal in a rural hiking area. As long as the users are within the less of a mile talking range, these radios have fantastic clarity and are really easy to use. There are plenty of advantageous uses for these radios around the home such as being on the roof for maintenance or putting up Christmas decorations and needing to communicate in case of an unforeseen situation. If you have kids, I can see these radios being handy if they are having a backyard ‘camp out’. If you’re looking for an alternative way to communicate in less than a mile distance, then I believe that these MicroTalk radios will serve that purpose.

    Not Really "Pro" Grade

The Cobra PX500BC Pro Business Radio is a 2-pack of 1-watt, micro-sized walkie-talkie radios for use primarily in a business environment, designed to give you multiple floor coverage in a single building. First, the “Pro” portion of the descriptor is somewhat misleading. I found the radios to be incredibly lightweight, which is good for carrying for a full day, but found the plastic to be very cheap as compared to a much more expensive business radio. The plastic mars very easily, and shiny scratches could be seen on the backs simply by removing the radios from the carrying holsters (included). While I didn’t attempt to damage them by dropping them (like would be done in a real business environment), I am not confident that the plastic of the radio would hold up to a high drop onto a hard surface. The included holster also seems lightweight and don’t believe the belt clip will hold up long under heavy use or catching your hip on a doorframe or something. I have destroyed many an Otterbox phone holsters the same way, and they are several times more rugged than the holster included. Also a highly frustrating point is the retention of the radio in the holster. It is held in by 2 separate teeth which do a good job of grabbing the radio at the top of the device and holding it in. What is frustrating is that these 2 teeth cannot be easily released in 1 motion, meaning you have to release each tooth individually, making it a 2-3 step process to release the radio from the holster. The device includes a large, easy-to-read display on the front, and the radio is capable of 22 different channels. You can also set several different “privacy codes” to each channel, which is what in more expensive radios is called a “PL” or “Privacy Line” code. It is important to note that “privacy” doesn’t mean “encrypted”. It is simply a filter to filter out traffic on the same channel. For example, if your company uses these radios on “Channel 18” and so does another company down the road, you may hear each other’s’ radio traffic. The PL code would simply filter the other company’s traffic from your radio, and they wouldn’t hear you, either (unless they also matched the privacy code). This also doesn’t keep from another set of radios from stepping on your traffic. Two radios on different codes wouldn’t hear each other, but since they’re still on the same base frequency (channel), you would step on each other causing interference. This is obviously inherent on any 2-way radio, and is not a limitation or flaw with this radio, rather I’m just explaining the “privacy” really isn’t. The push-to-talk (PTT) button is in an odd place for a 2-way radio – it’s on the face just above the display. If you’re used to a normal 2-way portable radio, where the PTT is on the side, this can be a new thing to get used to. The volume button is small & non-intrusive on the top of the radio, but that same small size can cause issues if you’re wearing gloves. Likewise, if your hands are wet or slippery, changing the volume or turning the radio on/off may be a challenge as the knob has no texture or ribbing on it to give you grip. Channel buttons are located on the side, and I found myself occasionally bumping a button & dropping onto another channel. A positive beep noise let me know this happened, but required me to look down & see if I had changed the channel up or down. There is a single headphone/mic jack combo on the top of the radio, fully water-protected with a rubber hood. Likewise, a rubber hood covers the micro USB port (for charging) on the side of the radio. The radios come with as 2-gang charger and necessary micro USB cable and power plug. You can simply drop the radios in the gang charger & leave them to recharge. Alternatively, you can use the included micro USB to directly plug in to each radio (the cord is actually a split cord that ends with 2 micro USB connections, allowing you to charge both radios simultaneously if you don’t have or want to use the gang charger). I did find a cheapness to the gang charger, as well, as there sounded to be multiple pieces of loose plastic on the inside of the charger when you shake it. The device works fine, so not sure if it was loose solder or loose plastic, or something more important, but just takes away from any confidence of these being “pro” radios. Battery life was okay, running about 12 hours as per the manufacturers’ qualification, but obviously will vary with the number of times you talk over it. To make the radios thinner, the batteries are small rechargeable wafer batteries with a connector to plug them into the radio. I would have sacrificed a little more bulk to have an option of putting in AAA or AA batteries to use in a pinch when the rechargeable battery is depleted and there is no option or time to charge. If you’re using these for longer than normal periods, or do a lot of talking on them, consider ordering a couple of replacement batteries. However know that to remove the batteries & swap you will need a micro Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery door. As for distance, they worked well on my property and in my building, although I didn’t try them over more than a 3-story distance. And know that somehow Best Buy, in their description, claims these cover “23 miles”. They don’t. They’re 1-watt radios, and the usual rule of thumb is 1 mile for each 1 watt. Cobra does not list a maximum mileage, only a number of square feet covered (claim 250,000 square feet and 20 stories). Again, depending on building construction, devices in the building, and the potential of others using similar radios, your distance will likely vary from the manufacturer’s “best case” qualifications. In summary, these would be okay radios to use for light usage in a small area. I would not recommend these for heavy use, i.e. a Security Guard or something, just based on the power, size, button placement, and the holster. I ended up giving these to the kids to play with, and they’re more than happy with them.

I bought a total of 6 of them for my Events Company, they worked well outdoors, but once we went inside and the music started, it was hard to listen on the radio conversations, decided to keep them, as other radios I looked at started at $200 or more for one.

I tested this out with my husband as he walked around our neighborhood/a couple of blocks away and then we tested it out while he drove in the car. He was able to walk about a 0.3 miles (in our neighborhood) before we heard some static. He walked towards the main busy street and I could barely hear the busy street noise in the background. When he drove a few blocks away there was more static as he reached the mile mark, but that could just be from interrupted connections from the neighborhood. We didn't try switching the channels, so that would probably improve the connection. My husband uses 2-way radios for certain jobs they do where they shut down the streets for road/pipe maintenance and he was pretty impressed at how well these radios worked. He was skeptical about it based on the size, but was def impressed with how well they worked. The size is perfect and the clip does not interfere with the talk button. I, at first, kept pressing the side button to talk and than realized the round button on the front was the correct button. The side area that looks like a button is actually where you plug in the USB wire to charge it. I like that there is a charging station, but that they also provide a USB wire with 2 connectors so you can charge both with just the USB. The battery life was pretty good. On 3 bars, we tested it out, played with it a little with our kids throughout the day and than just left it on and it lasted about 24 hours. We cant wait to use these on our next bike ride or camping trip.

These radios are an excellent addition to my outdoor kit and also for keeping family together in rural areas. These are also great for indoor communication on job sites or areas where cell phone signal is weak. You get the typical clam-shell packaging from the 80's and 90's so be prepared to avoid cuts if the plastic breaks when opening. I can see survailance and fast paced work environments benefiting from these. Nothing spectacular to report about the presentation and unboxing so we will move right along. To me, these are built for retail customers who take care of their things. With the cheap feeling plastic build and the holster clip being flimsy, I would not trust this at a job site and I wouldn't want to drop test them to see if they will survive. These small pocket sized radios that last all day (8 hours for me not really interested in testing for longer). The battery is small and secured by two screws that hold the battery door in place. The battery reminds me of the old cordless phones from the 90's. You are provided with a micro USB port to charge them in case you are away from the charging station. Range is something a bit concerning as I couldn't get 1 mile because of where I live. I would say this isn't normal and your results may vary. If you live somewhere that does not have tall buildings or a somewhere like a construction site with line of sight, you can get better range. I am unable to provide any helpful info on the range. I am not a fan of the button placement for PTT. It is a circular button right above the little screen that says what your parameters are for comms. I naturally was pushing on the side thinking it was a button, only to find out it was a flap to protect a USB charging port. The mic port is on top which is great for me but if you have a 90 degree jack it may be a concern. Overall, these are good but not the best I have seen in this price range. My 5 year old and I use them to play and pretend we are on a missions to safe the world.

Overall I think these radios are worth the price, but they don't have the range promised. They have many channels for privacy and easy to use large buttons and volume control. They have a nice clip that swivels and can be charged on their stand or charged individually with USB cord. They are made of plastic with nothing to absorb an impact from a fall so only time will tell how well they hold up. Probably my biggest complaint was the battery. The connecting piece is very very small and took a while to get the battery attached and I was afraid I might break or bend the prongs in the connecting piece. The good news is once connected you probably don't have to connect them ever again. Overall these would be good for use in the same building or camping.
