I tried on 5.8 and 2.4 with the same issues. I ended up returning it and getting the Mavic Air. I am so much more happy with the Air. There may have been something I was doing wrong but I could not get it to work without disconnecting. All of the devices were on the current firmware; drone, batteries, and controller.

We are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the Spark. There are options for securing the connection of phone to controller when in a high signal area such as using an OTG Micro USB to Lightning cable.
