An Outstanding Sequel

Doctor Sleep had a lot to live up to both from fans of the book and fans of the original Kubrick film. And much like Blade Runner 2049, Doctor Sleep operates brilliantly as both a sequel to the original and as a stand-alone film that you could watch and enjoy without ever having seen the first one.
With a host of special features including an extended Director’s Cut of the film, this set is a must-own for any fan of The Shining or Stephen King properties in general. This movie truly lives up to the greatness of its predecessor and delivers dynamic performances from everyone in the cast and an epic conclusion for several of the characters that many have us have spent decades wondering “what happened to them AFTER the Overlook Hotel?”
This film looks gorgeous in 4K and the sound design especially benefits from the Dolby treatment, especially the film score. This set is DEFINITELY worth the purchase!!

I had high expectations going into this film. I was not disappointed. I bought the 4K disc without having seen the movie because I already have The Shining on 4K and I wanted its sequel in 4K as well to round out the "set." The plot of the movie does a very good job of blending the King novels with the Kubric film and I believe provides a satisfactory sequel to fans of both. There is an interview with King in the extras in which he expresses his pleasure with the screenplay and the results. When scenes of high contrast are presented the HDR on this disc makes them really pop visually. The blacks are deep and ominous but still give you plenty of detail. Maybe not a reference example of HDR due to many very dark scenes but still an excellent visual experience. Combined with a very good story line, some stellar acting, and a tying together of novels and movie I find this a disc worth owning.

An excellent continuance of the original shinning movie. All of the characters from the original and Dr. Sleep deliver attention grabbing scenes. With the flash backs for clarity/knowledge and the new footage blended seamlessly together to forge a suspenseful counterpart to the original Steven king masterpiece.
Worth watching and worth owning.
You won't wanna miss some of the things revealed in this movie as it pertains to the original too. Fantastically done . Received high approval from everyone I know that saw it. If you weren't aware what this was about or never knew it existed. Well nows your chance to relive and experience it as you never thought it would play out.
Get the bluray and watch the directors cut , there like an additional 30+ mins of scary footage to see. "Go ahead check it out"

The only bad thing I can say about the set is this...the 4K disc is the theatrical version and the blu ray is the directors cut extended edition (30 minutes longer). It should have been the other way around. A disappointment, but it is what it is.
As far as the movie I really enjoyed it, but be warned it is VERY slow moving (the directors cut at least) but it really picks up in the 2nd half of the film. It continues the lore of the shining in a very believable and enjoyable way. The ONLY complaint I have about the movie is it's not very scary at all.
The original shining was one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. Psychological, jump scares, pure terror, it had a little bit of everything. There were only MAYBE two or three parts in this one genuinely creepy, but it was still very enjoyable.

Great SK Adaptation

Not all Stephen King movies are treated with the respect for the written word as this one is. Is this adaptation a word for word recreation on screen, no. But, it is very much there. The addition of the Kubrick Shining was absolutely necessary. Why? because whether the diehard SK fan likes it or not, Kubrick's Shining set up the film universe for this story, and so the sequel had to follow. If not we would have 4 different version of The Shining; King's novels, Kubrick's Version, Garris/King's Version, Flanagan's Version. Luckily, Flanagan continued the version that Kubrick set up, and he did it wonderfully.
When I watch this, I watch the director's cut. I feel that every moment in the DC adds to the overall feel and completeness of the story.

The movie had Mike Flanagan's unique touch, so people should stop comparing it to Stanley Kubrick's' THE SHINING. Of course it's not going to be the same thing, they both have their unique twisted yet beautiful styles.
Flanagan did a great job in bringing elements in both the book and the previous movie together in harmony in DOCTOR SLEEP. The plot is also very compatible with the The Shining one and it all ties together very nicely.
The plot is chilling and dark, especially that one scene that I'm sure no one will ever forget and the acting is on point.
In conclusion, because I don't want to spoil, Doctor Sleep is an amazing movie! I would totally recommend it!!

As both an adaptation to Stephen King's novel and a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece, Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep reawakens old horror wounds and past traumas. Set forty years after the terrifying events at the Overlook Hotel, Ewan McGregor's Danny beats his personal demons only to do battle against Rebecca Ferguson's Rose the Hat and her caravan cult of psychic vampires. The fight to preserve a child's innocence haunts 4K Ultra HD with a terrifyingly beautiful Dolby Vision HDR presentation and a spookily awesome, reference-quality Dolby Atmos soundtrack. With a small collection of bonuses borrowed from the Blu-ray, which contains the Director's Cut, the UHD edition is highly recommended.

Fine movie but a very odd edition

Okay, so The Shining is my favorite scary movie ever. So when I saw Doctor Sleep, I was beyond surprised how this movie stood alongside the Kubrick masterpiece (and knowing how King's version was quite different). Not only does this mesh the two versions of The Shining together in interesting ways, this movie, AND the extended director's cut deliver (and that is the superior version).
Now then, here's what's odd about this edition. I don't have 4K (but fortunately have an Xbox One X), but I feel for those who only get to enjoy 4k only with the theatrical cut. Back to the "fortunately" part, the special features are on the 4k disc. So if you have blu-ray only, and no way to do Movies Anywhere, then you're shot on the extra features (and the solid theatrical cut). Anyway, the set is still nice, but the way the cuts and extras were applied is rather questionable in my book.
In any case though, the SteelBook is a very nice display as well. Beyond that, hope this review helps.

When I was a kid, I saw a trailer for THE SHINING...and just the music alone scared the crap out of me. When I was older, I saw the entire movie, and it was even more terrifying. The menace, the nameless dread, the mounting horror; it's all the stuff nightmares -- the best nightmares -- are made of.
I don't know how they did it, but DOCTOR SLEEP looks, sounds, and feels as if somehow, Stanley Kubrick came back from the dead and made this movie, too. The resemblance is uncanny. And speaking of uncanny resemblances--
No. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but trust me when I tell you...

A worthy sequel to a classic film. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this, but was pleasantly surprised with it. Very likeable characters and villains you really hate. I mean I was really rooting for the good guys in this film. It's been a while since I've seen a villain so despicable that I was clenching my fists. A bunch of child killing degenerates that needed to be put down. Very satisfying.
The movie starts off really slow but gets better and more interesting as it delves deeper into this psychological warfare between the two groups. Doctor Sleep is it's own thing but at the same time is very respectful to the Shining. It is a worthy addition to a great film.

Answering all your questions from the 1980 horror classic, we get to revisit Doc from the first film all grown up and twisted from his experiences at The Overlook with dear old dad. This film touches on quite of a few of the theories of the first film and since it's a direct sequel from Stephen King himself, it's the de facto explanation of happenings from The Shining. Amazing job by the production design team for bringing The Overlook back to life in the modern era. You'd be hard pressed to find many differences. Would have been nice if the film had a title that better reminded people of The Shining, but I recommend this as quite the journey back to the hedgemaze.

As a fan of the Kubrick version of the Shining and a big horror fan, I was surprised by how good the movie actually is. Don't expect a carbon copy of the first film; it is a completely new plot line featuring a middle aged Danny who still suffers from the trauma of the Overlook Hotel. After hitting rock bottem, he is introduced to a little girl who shares in his supernatural power. Add in a cult of immortal power sucking child killers, plenty of ghosts, and some familiar faces, you get one good movie. By the way, the Blu Ray has the directors cut that is about a half hour longer. It basically has extended scenes, but doesn't ruin the pace. I highly recommend it.

Both the Blu-ray and the 4k discs in this package have a nice Dolby Atmos audio mix that sounds great. Picture quality is good too.
The steelbook looks good. Nice to see "Redrum" inscribed on the back of the steelbook's exterior under the J-card. Interior artwork was OK.
If you have The Shining in your library (especially if you have the steelbook like me) then you need to have this steelbook too. Doctor Sleep is a well-done sequel.

Sequels are hard to like and hard to make. They don't always work because they feel cheap. Hollywood makes sequels because they think they can get the same response as the first film. So often it's not the case, however, with Doctor Sleep, the director not only delivers a fantastic sequel, he also gives a very honorable movie that honors not only Stanley Kubrick's film The Shinning but also the renowned novel by Stephen King.
It's not just a scary movie, it's an adventure, it's a character story about Danny. It's also great going back to the Overlook Hotel and getting a better understanding of what it means to have The Shine.

The Shining Is One Of My All Time Favorite Films! It Is A Masterpiece Of The Genre & Art Form That Is Cinema & I Rarely Use That Term To Describe A Film. A Sequel To This Classic Made Me Very Nervous, But Like All Films, I Checked My Expectations At The Door & Went Along For The Journey That Was Doctor Sleep! This Movie Is Fantastic! It Keeps The Tone & Feel Of Kubrick’s Original, While Being Its Own Entity All Together. Performance, Story, Tension, Horror, Score All Exist In This Much Later Sequel That We Didn’t Need Or Deserve, But So Pleasantly Thrilled We Received! If You’re A Stephen King Fan, Do Yourself A Favor & See Doctor Sleep!

One of my favorite movies of this genre...horror. Definitely not for kids. It's an adult tale that will take you into a sinister world of a group of cult worshippers that use children to extend their lives. Rebecca Ferguson is their leader and her performances continue to impress. Ewan McGregor plays the lead, Danny, whose destiny will lead him against the cult worshippers and whose background in the Shining will figure prominently in this film. The real treat is the return to The Overlook hotel from The Shining and it's cast of spirits. Buckle up it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Doctor Sleep is both a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1979 masterpiece ‘The Shining,’ it’s also a sequel to Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It’s a psychological thriller that leans into horror but I wouldn’t say it’s a horror movie. There’s some disturbing moments but few on the gory side. This movie is rated R for obvious reasons and I would say is more violent than the shining.
It’s got Obi wan so who doesn’t like that. Definitely a long movie but enjoyable characters and set pieces keep the ball rolling until the climax. The runtime definitely boys it down but there’s actually a 3 hours director cut , which could either be a good thing or a bad thing. It could fix the pacing or make it drag.
Definitely recomend for fans of the book or movie and genre fans.

The Movie: the movie is excellent, despite having the unenvious task of following up one of the genre's greatest films, The Shining. The story is engrossing, coherent, and really brings you into the shining universe. Ewan McGregor puts on a superb performance.
Audio: hands down one of the most immersive and atmospheric Atmos tracks you will hear. You are right in the middle of the movie.
Video: incredible video quality highlighted by intense lighting.
This movie is a must own for horror fans and home theater enthusiasts alike.

While Doctor Sleep may have not hit on all cylinders at the box office money wise, this film still was hailed highly with critics as well as with me with strong performances, a story that expanded on the the idea of the original as well as opening a universe of what could be attained or powered with the shining powers. Not simply sticking to play inside the box this film delivered strong performances from all showing the evolution of Danny Torrance as well as the fears or dangers that could come to those with these powers, highly recommend.
