Great product, but failed to support Homekit

I only write reviews when I feel strongly about a product, and in this case I feel very strongly unfortunately -- very strongly negative.
I bought the EcoBee3 for two reasons: that it was a very smart thermostat and that it would integrate with my Apple environment.
After doing my research, EcoBee was listed as a launch partner for Apple HomeKit from the very beginning. I looked out on their site and spent time researching other's opinions on the device. Everyone I read said it was a great product and they could not wait for HomeKit support.
We had just replaced the A/C in the house, and I had to choose a thermostat in late May... and of course I chose the EcoBee3.
Less than a month later they announce that my brand new Ecobee3 would *NOT* be HomeKit compatible and that it would only be new hardware that was compatible. I quickly mailed into support to see how I could get this fixed, and they told me there was no path to resolution.
With Apple HomeKit support being the key reason I bought this device, I now have to give the vendor the worst score possible.
I would NOT recommend purchasing this device if you want HomeKit, as they released a completely new hardware device to do this. I would also give the vendor as a whole a poor score for their lack of communication and path for resolution for their customer for HomeKit for their previously loyal customers.
Buyer beware.

I'm sorry that you were misinformed about HomeKit compatibility by the websites you used to conduct your research. Unfortunately, Apple's accessory certification requirements are such that there is no way for us to make the previous iteration of ecobee3 compatible with HomeKit using a software or firmware update - it requires new hardware.
I appreciate your frustration and am sorry for the inconvenience this is causing you but this is not something we are able to control or provide a resolution for.

A Fantastic High-Tech Thermostat

It may be too soon to review the Ecobee3 thermostat since it has been installed for only a few days. On the other hand, this may be the best of all possible times to comment, before I begin to take the device for granted.
We purchased the Ecobee3 after my wife decided we should have a “smart” thermostat installed along with our regular spring HVAC maintenance. Our contractor was not too enthusiastic about the specific brand she mentioned and suggested another brand. After checking the usual Internet sites, Consumer Reports, cNet, etc., I found that those were okay, but the Ecobee3 was the clear favorite among both techies and users. I called this to the attention of the contractor’s technology guru. He got on line and became increasingly enthusiastic about the Ecobee3 as he read the specifications and the reviews. We’re his first test case, so we’ll keep him informed about our experience with the device.
My wife has commented that she doesn’t expect any energy savings going forward since the house is now always comfortable in every room. Frankly, that’s 90% of what we wanted; energy savings, if any, are incidental. In fact, if our gas and power bills go up a bit, but the house is comfortable in every room throughout the year that’s just fine.
Another reason this may be a good time to comment is that over the past week temperatures have fluctuated between mid- to high-70s, and the mid-30s. The Ecobee3 set to “automatic” has made those changes unnoticeable inside the house. The device switches the HVAC system between “heat” and “cool” mode as necessary to keep the interior temperature within a set range, and you can set different ranges for “sleep,” “home,” and “away.” Right now the thermostat is in “home” mode and the house is a comfortable 63 degrees F – obviously we like it rather cool. The Ecobee3 has just called for heat to maintain that temperature. Should the inside temperature rise to 72 F – unlikely since it is 48 outside – the thermostat will change the system to cooling mode. Between those two extremes the fan runs to maintain a relatively constant temperature throughout the house.
While I am sure there’s more to learn, the Ecobee3 learning curve was very rapid. After professional installation – which I recommend – the device was programmed and delivering the performance described above by the end of the day. We haven’t yet used some of the more sophisticated features, such as “Follow Me,” “Away,” and “Vacation,” but I’m sure they will be equally user friendly when needed.
Connecting to our home WiFi was problem free (make sure you know your password), as was downloading, installing, and using the Android app. Later we had to reset the router for an issue that had nothing to do with the thermostat. I was a little worried, because we have experienced occasional reconnection issues with “smart” TVs, disk players, and satellite receivers in the past, but the Ecobee3 was back on line in seconds.
Unless something very unexpected happens I am very happy with the Ecobee3 and can highly recommend it.

Do you have a busy home? So busy that a programmable thermostat doesn’t always makes sense to you? Do you have a difficult time programming your thermostat because of your constantly changing schedule?? This was problem for me. I would set my programmable thermostat only to forget that it didn’t need to run at certain times because I had a meeting or the kids had activities, forgot to put it in vacation mode, etc. I needed more control of my heating and cooling system in order to prevent spending money on unnecessary heating and cooling cost.
If you’re running into the same problems, then the ecobee3 system might be the solution for you. If you are tech savvy, have home Wi-Fi, a newer system, and would like to access your thermostat from your smart phone, tablet, or computer as well as at the thermostat itself, then you should really consider this unique thermostat. You can lock your thermostat with a password too if you have curious children who fidget with things so they won’t be able to change the temperature. There are other great features like reminders to change your filter and UV light or when it’s time to schedule your cleanings on your system. It comes with a sensor that communicates with the thermostat to reach your optimal temperature. You can even walk by the thermostat and it’ll give you the outside weather along with the percentage of humidity in your home. I personally have one in my home. My husband and I love our ecobee3 and highly recommend it!!

I've had this for a couple months now and love it! It is super easy to program and has many awesome features. I've had an older programmable thermostat for years, but could never remember how to program it, so it just stayed a constant temperature. Ecobee is so easy to set up and adjust, either on the main device or by app from my phone. I bought a couple extra remote sensors, so the temperature is adjusting to what part of the house most of the activity is in. By logging into the Home IQ page I can see all the stats regarding my system, when the furnace was operating, humidity levels, etc. I can read the sensor data, and determine which rooms run warmest or coolest, and when motion occurred in that area. New improvements to the interface will provide even more data! The estimate is that I have already saved $30 in 2 months!

I love this thermostat! I tried a few other smart thermostats, but this is the best by far. It was easy to install and setup. It looks pretty cool too. In fact I am so happy with it; I decided to buy a second one for upstairs.
The remote sensors (follow me) feature is awesome. They monitor and maintain the temperature in the room you are in, not only in the hallway where the thermostat is. This feature is especially helpful at night. You can set it to monitor the temperature in the bedroom(s) only.
The Home IQ reporting feature is really great too. You can view your system usage, schedule, weather impact, etc – meaningful information in a graph format that is easy to read.

I installed the ecobee3 a couple of months ago replacing an aging programmable thermostat that I was never happy with.
The ecobee3 is a breath of fresh air. It was simple to install both in the furnace and on the wall. It took a bit of time to set it up as I was not used to the various options, but it was not difficult.
I installed the ecobee3 a couple of months ago replacing an aging programmable thermostat that I was never happy with.
The ecobee3 is a breath of fresh air. It was simple to install both in the furnace and on the wall. It took a bit of time to set it up as I was not used to the various options, but it was not difficult.
ecobee3 pros:
·It's easy to install
·It looks great on the wall
·I like the screen, when I walk into the room I can see the temperature clearly and the weather (Although I’m not always happy with the weather outside).
·The options screen is very useful for making lifestyle adjustments that were not possible with any thermostat I have had previously.
·It’s very easy to adjust and operate
·The humidity reading on the screen is helpful as well so that I can adjust it to create a healthier environment in my house.
·The mobile app access is excellent. The ability to adjust on the fly and / or when away – as I often forget before I leave – is a huge help.
·I have had problems with my home Internet. The email notifications have actually helped resolve that issue as well as a security system problem, as I didn’t know the house was not continuously monitored when away as the internet was down. This was an unexpected bonus.
·We have microclimates (cool/warm areas of the house) that seem to be somewhat mitigated since the installation.
·The remote sensors are an excellent idea. I actually need two more and will get them soon.
·I am anxious to see how it helps me out once the A/C is on this summer. I find my system runs continuously and am cold in some parts of the house and too warm in others. I will update on this front.
Overall, I think that this is a great product. I have already seen some cost savings. As I said earlier, the A/C will tell the story. My hydro bills are through the roof in the summer and anything will help. For me this is a 5 star product so far. I intend to install one in my cottage this summer and would recommend it to all of my friends.

This is the first smart thermostat I have used. I did a lot of review readings of this device compared to the Nest. The main difference between the two is user control- the Nest relies on the program itself to determine how to operate, whereas the Ecobee is programmable. I didn't like the fact that the Nest "collects data" for a full 2 weeks before creating a schedule; I'm smart enough to enter a schedule into a thermostat. Also, I was apprehensive about the Nest after reading some reviews where bugs were not fixed on the program updates and caused excess energy usage.
After installing the Ecobee and entering a schedule, we set the extra sensor in our lower level where it is about 5 degrees cooler. The thermostat apparently averages the ambient temperature among the sensors, which made the lower level very comfortable, but the upstairs sweltering hot. We ended up putting the sensor in our bedroom, which has resulted in a generally comfortable temperature around the whole house.
The Ecobee phone app is fairly user friendly- I just had to get used to remembering that "comfort settings" means temperature settings and is separate from the actual schedule. After several weeks of checking the temperature in the house on my phone while at work, I kept noticing that the temperature never actually lowered all the way to the set temp. of 62 degrees (it always seemed to hover around 65). I thought that this might be due to the motion sensor detecting our cats running around the house, and thus disabled the motion sensor. This has resulted in the temp. in the house lowering to the set 62 degrees while the house is empty during the day.
I do wish that it had some type of energy usage report like the Nest reportedly has, but even some reviewers have said that it is not that great. Even so, it would be neat to see a chart or some type of comparison with the Ecobee.
Additionally, the device itself is very sleek looking, and it gets noticed frequently by guests. I also like that it recognizes that we have a 2 stage furnace compared to a single stage- something I'm not sure the Nest has the ability to recognize and at least makes me feel like we're saving more fuel than otherwise.

I had planned to buy a connected thermostat for some time (after all, I have wireless door locks, lights, garage door opener, motion sensors, flood sensors, and more). That way, the temperature would be correct when I arrive home, turn off when I don't need it, warn me if the temp is too high/low, adjust automatically for vacations, and be controllable from anyplace in the world via my phone.
I wasn't sure which thermostat I'd buy - but I was certainly leaning toward Nest. I decided not to go with Nest when I heard about reliability problems and heard about ecobee3. The thing I most like about Ecobee3 is that they have remote sensors you can place in any room. Then, when there's motion, Ecobee3 knows where you are and tries to make sure it's comfortable there. So, no more freezing downstairs because the thermostat is in the warmer upstairs hallway (where no one is anyway). That was the problem we always had. I've only had this installed for about two week (I did the install and it was easy). But it seems already that we're more comfortable while watching tv downstairs at night. And, if not, it's easy to adjust the temperature using my phone instead of going upstairs to adjust the thermostat. I'm really happy with our decision to buy this (and I plan to buy more remote sensors to make the thermostat even smarter about our house).
p.s. The pictures of ecobee3 always make it look bigger than it is. It's only about 3.5" square.

In installed the ecobee3 on the weekend and it's excellent. It took me about 25 minutes to install and do a basic setup. I was able to connect with by a laptop and my phone to do further customization.
The interface is easy to use and the scheduling features are very simple to setup. My main reason for choosing this specific smart thermostat was the fact that it has remote thermostats that monitor other rooms. These were easy to add in and have really helped to keep the house temperature more even than the old system.
Overall, it's packed with features, a great price, has excellent tools, and works very well. They also have a support forum that is handy for info on some of the extras.
One final note, I have already recommended the ecobee3 to a friend of mine who was looking for a new thermostat. They loved the smart phone app!

Reasons why I like the ecobee3 over the Nest and the Lyric: Ease of use, ability to customize to almost any degree, and remote sensors. Out of the box (which has everything you need to get set up) the "Bee" is ready to roll. Other than having to fix a wiring issue left by an old installer on our old mercury switch thermostat, I was done and cleaned up in 30 minutes. Looks-wise, the display is very intuitive and responds quickly to touch. It's very similar to the Android operating system, which is great because my wife fears learning new technology and this looks like what she already uses. The learning curve is short and painless. I like it because I can customize beyond just setting a timer program, and I'm limited only by my imagination and the capabilities of my HVAC system. In it's most basic use, the Ecobee3 is a very expensive programmable thermostat. Once you "pop the hood" so to speak, you can take advantage of other programs beyond simply ON/OFF based on the time of day. Here's the game changer: The remote sensors. The Nest and Lyric want to learn your schedule. Our schedule changes every day, so having a sensor that determines occupancy is more what we need. The sensors themselves are tiny enough to stash on a shelf, wall, or doorway. Add enough of them to the rooms you care about and you can "blend" the temps in however many you choose and the system will maintain an average temp in those rooms. Again, all of this is customizable to the nth degree. Add in the remote capability, and I can do anything I want to the system with my phone, tablet, or laptop from anywhere in the world as long as I have a cell signal. All of this is built right in, no modules to add on, no subscriptions to maintain. Ecobee has a fantastic website community where people share programming tips and tricks, and customer service is right there if you need them. They're the new kids on the block, but they've got a nice product to compete with the big dogs. Buy with confidence. I did. No regrets.

This is a thermostat that will change your mind about home comfort. Not only does it install easily for any DIYer, but it can save you on your electric bill. It can be used to control AC and heat automatically with several other devices that are tied to an AC unit. It can be easily set up to email you reminders when to change filters, get the HVAC serviced, etc. On top of that, the remote sensor(s) can help balance the temperature throught the house, so that you room with the thermostat isn't the only place in the house at that temperature. All of this can also be remotely controlled through your cell phone, so that when you head out on a trip you set it to Away mode and save money... then before you head back, you can turn the HVAC back on through your phone so that the house is back to temperature in time. It can track weather and adjust with that into consideration.

The Ecobee allows you to do what other thermostats won't. You can have up to 32 remote sensor (majority wont need that much). and each remote sensor will sense the temps and movement as well as the thermostat itself. Or you can turn the sensor from the thermostat off and only use the remote sensor to calculate it. You can control your customization. It also partnered with IFTTT.COM which is awesome, if you dont know what it is make sure to check it out. The unit looks Slick, and will not steal power from your system to power it on, no worries about batteries. You can customize your temps how you like it or you can set up to follow you. I have two of these in my home and best money i spent. I plan are getting more sensors so that i can use only certain location to determine the temps i want.

The ecobee3 is great. When you don't have a zoned HVAC the sensors really help make sure the whole house is comfortable. We installed it ourselves and it was quite easy without a technical background. The house has been much more comfortable since we installed it - no more portable heaters in the bedrooms. Plus we have been using less energy. I did have one day where my ecobee3 became unresponsive and my heater was running relentlessly, but I called customer service who reset my unit remotely and problem solved. They were very friendly and helpful, fixed the problem, and I haven't had any issues since.

I've had the Ecobee Smart Thermostat for over two years, and after much analysis and review of the functionality and features of the next generation of this product, can assure you that this is the most user friendly, forward thinking company and product on the market today. I was very pleased with the support I received in terms of Installation material, videos, tech support and functionality of the Ecobee 3. This company "gets it" when it comes to designing a product for home comfort and energy savings. The product is well thought out, feature rich, visually appealing, and pays for itself in six months. Best of all, the folks at Ecobee DON'T STOP innovating! This is a product of great value, well crafted, simple to use, and positioned for the future.

I over researched a new thermostat. I certainly considered the Nest in line with this one and went with the Ecobee 3. First of all, I love the remote sensors. I also think the thermostat is rocking on the wall. I love its look, and I love the weather availability from the screen. I also like the remote access from my phone. I travel enough to appreciate being able to set my thermostat away from my Iphone.
I could not be happier with a themostat. I also bought 2 extra remote sensors so that I can work on a temperature that is not based on just my hallway thermostat temperature.
Super Duper.

This thermostat is amazing. Smarter than its competitors (Lyric, Nest, etc.) the Ecobee 3 balances your whole home, not just the temp in the hallway with its remote room sensors. It has changed the comfort and consequently the happiness of our home for the better. No more worrying about the temp in the kids rooms, with this thermostat we can prioritize their rooms or just let them be averaged in with all of the other reading from different locations in the home.
Set up is all so simple and guided by the thermostat itself that anyone can install one and have all over comfort for their home in just 30 minutes! Don't pass this one by, because it really is the whole package and a new way to keep comfort and savings as a priority in your home.

Environmentally Conscious Operation for Better Energy Efficiency
As a person very familiar with technology and having a Smart Home setup already, this was a no-brainer choice for a thermostat for a number of reasons.
1) SENSORS! Despite living in a single level home and it being brand new construction (very insulated inside and out), I felt it was important to get a thermostat that will help balance out the temperatures in the home...by actually measuring the current room temperatures. The sensors provide this feature and more. Even the thermostat itself is a sensor and you are provided another one in the box. You can also tell which sensors you want to use during comfort setting setups and your schedule. Very intuitive!
2) Setup - VERY EASY! I was fortunate to have all the wires needed to be able to control it including the "C" wire for power. If you don't have this "C" wire, Ecobee provides an adapter to hook up to your furnace to be able to make it work. I don't believe any other company does that. Connecting to WiFi was simple with one caveat - do not make the WiFi password 64 characters! It's too long. I'm using a personally created one at 19 characters without issue.
3) Beautiful all around - the thermostat itself, the app, and website. All three look almost exactly the same and provide numerous configurations. They've added numerous stats to compare your usage to others in your area with the newest update. I like being able to see how long the fan is running especially when I've configured to run a certain amount per hour. You can really get an idea of how much energy you're using and tailor your schedule to avoid peaks if you use the sensors to their full advantage.
4) Customer support is probably the best I've ever experienced. They really want to help you and genuinely care. I provide email support myself, but the phone support was excellent too. They also really want to hear back from their customers to make improvements to the design and overall experience of the product. Plus, if you become a member of the VIBee site, you have the opportunity to earn valuable points to get some cool stuff for free - including more sensors!
There are so many other things to talk about, but this review would become boring and longwinded. Essentially, it beats out the competition by an eagle's decent and really gives you comfort in knowing you are definitely going to save money over the long haul. Even the CEO says the Ecobee3 can save you as much money as the huge investment he made on solar panels installed on his own home.
Take my word for it and become an member of the Hive!
