In the world of video capture quality matters as well as hardware that doesn't impact your experience. The Elgato 4k X brings to the table a plug and play solution that is built upon its intuitive software and hardware. For game captures I want something that doesn't require me to spend countless hours setting up and ensuring I have the proper video software and correct encoders. Elgato alleviates all of this with their lightweight simple solution. Upon opening the box you are presented with the small form factor capture device and the high speed HDMI cable. I was able to hook this up along with the USB-c that's included to my computer and plugged in my Xbox Series X. It took all of 3 minutes and I had a pass through image. I was really excited for this product as it claims it captures up to 144FPD in 4K which is amazing content creation capture capabilities. It does what it states to do full stop. I was also very impressed that it allows up to VRR 144FPS and has HDR10 capabilities. I cant say enough how clear of content this capture creates as it didn't compress video Quality and I was able to capture amazing screen shots from the video footage. If you're a content creator looking to have the very best capture device from consoles and even your steam deck then this device is for you. It can even handle the Nintendo Switch and ROG Ally and capture gameplay from them.

Introducing the Elgato 4K X: a compact powerhouse of an external capture card. Bundled with a USB C to C 3.2 and HDMI 2.1 cable, this device is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet it packs a punch. Weighing in at just under half a pound and with a footprint slightly larger than that of an Altoids tin can, the 4K X offers incredible portability without compromising on performance. One of the standout features of the 4K X is its ability to record in stunning 4K resolution at 144Hz with SDR and tone mapping capabilities. Despite its diminutive size, the device is sturdy and stable, thanks to two long strips of rubber feet on the bottom, preventing any unwanted movement when in use. Visually, the 4K X boasts a sleek rectangular design with tapered edges, giving it a modern and distinctive appearance. On the front, you'll find a convenient 3.5mm audio jack, while the backside houses HDMI 2.1 in and out ports for HDMI passthrough, as well as a USB C 3.2 port. Setting up the 4K X is a breeze. I simply connected my PS5 to the device's HDMI in port, then linked my LG C2 TV to the HDMI out port, and finally, connected it to my desktop via the USB C port. Within minutes, I was up and running, ready to capture content from my PS5. When it comes to performance, the 4K X delivers. With passthrough, the frame rates are consistently high, comparable to a direct connection. Compared to my XR1, I didn’t observe FPS drops, particularly in demanding games like Fortnite and COD. This reliability is crucial for maintaining the competitive edge while still capturing high-quality content. In conclusion, I highly recommend the Elgato 4K X to anyone involved in content creation workflows. Its compact size, powerful performance, and ease of use make it a standout choice in its category. Keep an eye out for sales – if you spot a deal, don't hesitate to make the purchase. The 4K X is a game-changer and will exceed your expectations!

I was looking for external 4K capture card and got the Elgato - 4K X. It came with Elgato 4K capture card, 8K HDMI 2.1 cable and USB 3.2 Type C cable. Setup is very easy, and it is plug and plug to a windows PC or Mac by connecting USB-C cable to the capture card and PC. The HDMI can be connected to a camcorder or gaming console and HDMI out can be connected monitor / TV. I have downloaded Elgato 4K capture utility software to get maximum quality from this capture card and OBS can be used as well for streaming. I have streamed an event in 4K via YouTube and quality of 4K streaming is exceptional from this capture card. There is no delay or lag in capture while playing games in XBOX X or PS5. The Elgato software is very easy to use. Stream Link is a new feature which is in beta added in 4K Capture Utility Update 1.1 which allow to record clean video and audio in 4K Capture Utility while utilizing the same video and audio in 3rd party software such as OBS Studio or XSplit with the maximum of 1080p60. The recording quality can be set up to 4K with bitrate of 140 MBps. The picture brightness, contrast, saturation, and Hue settings can be adjusted as well. The build quality is great, and it is very lightweight. It supports maximum resolution of 2160p (4K) @ 120 FPS with amazing 144Hz refresh rate along with HDR10 compatibility. It comes with two years warranty. I was using different capture card before and Elgato 4K X exceeded expectation due to high quality video capture, no lag and lot of supported devices without any complex setup. It is amazing capture card for gamers, YouTube content creators and live streaming.

Perfect card even for inexperienced users

I've recently been wanting to expand on the content I create for YouTube to include some gaming vids as well as live streaming, so this Elgato 4K X Capture Card came at the perfect time. I had never had a gaming capture card before so using this one and getting it setup was a bit new to me. Luckily Elgato made it really easy for someone inexperienced like me to get up and running in no time. Out of the box you get the capture card unit itself, one HDMI cable and a USB-C cable. These are nice cables too, very high quality and definitely made to handle the huge amounts of data transfer that needs to happen for streaming and capture. The only other thing you'll need is one more HDMI cable but unless you have all brand new equipment, you probably already have one connecting your gaming system to your TV/Monitor. Just take that one out of your TV/Monitor, and plug it into the input of the card instead. Plug in the second HDMI cable from the output of the card to your TV/Monitor, and finally plug the USB-C cable from the card to your computer. All that's left after that is to download the needed software. For my setup, I'm using this card to capture gaming content from my Xbox Series X that's connected to my 65" 4K TV, and a MacBook Pro with an M1 Max chip. For the software, you just go to the downloads section of Elgato's site, select which capture card you have and it tells you exactly what software to use. First you have to download the Elgato Utility software, and then you need a video recording/streaming software. Most likely you'll want to use OBS, which is what I downloaded even though Quicktime is also an option since I'm on a Mac. I've used OBS before and from my research have found that it's what works best with Elgato. The hardest part in setting everything up is configuring OBS. Even though it's a 3rd party service, Elgato still provides a very easy to follow setup instruction guide on their download page. I followed the steps exactly and was playing and recording a game from my Xbox within minutes. Of course there's a lot more tweaking and fine-tuning of OBS to get the most out of it, but Elgato at least gives you the basic steps needed to get going. My first test was just recording my gameplay. After clicking on the 'Start Recording' button, I just played as usual. There was absolutely no lag or interference of any kind with my gameplay and what I was seeing on my TV or hearing through my sound system. If it wasn't for my laptop being setup right next to my TV, I would never even know the game was being passed through another device. Both video and audio quality were exactly the same as before I hooked up the capture card. After I was done playing I just hit the 'Stop Recording' button in OBS and had an mp4 file in the directory I specified waiting for me. I pulled up the recording and it was PERFECT! I couldn't be happier with the quality of the gameplay captured, both video and audio. Video looked exactly the same as what I was seeing on my 4K TV while playing and at 60 FPS. Audio was perfect too. One of my clips I didn't realize I had OBS also capturing the input from the mic in my laptop. Since it was picking up the game audio from the capture card as well as the laptop mic, there was a VERY slight, echo, but I do mean slight. It was kind of like hearing someone speaking in a large room, probably because this setup is in my living room and not a small dedicated gaming room. The actual vocals from characters speaking in the game were perfectly clear and crisp, there was zero delay or lag whatsoever, which in a way really demonstrates the quality of this capture card and what its capable of. If there's one negative I have, it's that the capture card has to be connected to a computer to allow the game to pass through, which seems to be a common limitation with capture cards since they need to be powered by something. Probably not a big deal for most, but since I'm using it on my Xbox in my living room which is also shared by my wife and daughter, it means that when I'm not using it, I have to completely disconnect the capture card and plug my Xbox directly back to my TV. Again, not a huge deal, just a bit of a hassle for someone using it the way I do. Another thing I like about this capture card, is that even though it's meant for gaming, it can really be used to capture any video that goes through it. That means I can digitize old VHS and Hi-8 tapes, and at a better quality than using those cheap transfer devices (which I've used before). I see this as an extra bonus with this card. Overall I couldn't be happier with this capture card. The setup, the quality, its capabilities, basically everything about it. Best of all, you don't have to be a pro to use it. If you've never used a capture card before, or are thinking about getting into game streaming or creating gaming content, I would highly recommend this one. Between the quality of the captured gameplay and ease of use, Elgato really did a stand up job with this 4K X card that you'll almost feel like a pro even if you aren't one, yet!

This capture card has good quality, ease of use, noting its ability to effortlessly record and stream high-quality videos. Im happy with the setup process and performance. Im still working through latency and performance issues. Setting up the card is straightforward, its quick setup time and excellent image quality. It supports various resolutions, including custom ones like 21:9 (3360x1440), although setting these up may require adjustments in Windows display settings rather than Nvidia control panel. Make sure you properly configure so that you can get outstanding picture quality, especially when streaming at 3360x1440 resolution and 60fps, with seamless transmission to platforms. I’ve seen little to no stuttering, and better utilization of display resources while streaming, allowing me to focus on gaming without distractions. Overall this is a great addition to my gaming experience but may be a big step for some who are just now getting into the hobby. It’s also so small it can be stored anywhere.

With support for 4K resolution at an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, coupled with HDR10 compatibility, the visuals captured by this device are breathtaking. Whether I'm gaming on my Mac, PS5, or streaming content from another device, the clarity and color accuracy are unmatched. The HDR support adds depth and vibrancy to every scene, making for an immersive viewing experience. The HDMI 2.1 connectivity is a very improvement from prior generations. The increased bandwidth not only allows for higher resolutions and frame rates but also ensures minimal latency, which is crucial for competitive gaming and live streaming. I noticed a significant improvement in responsiveness compared to previous capture cards I've used, resulting in smoother gameplay and seamless streaming sessions. However, when playing first person shooters like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 on my PS5 and passing the video through the Elgato to my Mac Studio Display I found the lag not suitable for competitive multiplayer matches. For all other games there was no discernable lag. Setup was a breeze, thanks to the user-friendly software provided by Elgato. The intuitive interface makes it easy to customize settings, adjust audio levels, and fine-tune the capture quality to suit my needs. Whether I'm recording gameplay footage for a YouTube video or streaming live on Twitch, the Elgato 4K X gives me the flexibility and control I need to deliver professional-grade content. Using third party software like OBS was also easy to use with this card. In terms of build quality, the Elgato 4K X feels solid and durable, with a sleek and compact design that won't clutter up my workspace. The HDMI passthrough port is a convenient addition, allowing me to connect my monitor or TV directly to the capture card without any signal degradation. Overall, I can confidently say that the Elgato 4K X 4K144 HDR10 External Capture Card with HDMI 2.1 is a big improvement over prior capture cards for gamers and content creators alike. With its unparalleled video quality, low latency, and versatile connectivity options, it has quickly become an essential tool in my setup. Whether you're a professional streamer, aspiring YouTuber, or simply someone who appreciates high-quality video capture, this device is worth the investment.

I was excited to get to review this capture card! My teenage son and I were just talking about getting an external capture device specifically for our PS5. He was complaining that using the built in replay option on the PS5 was causing lag issues in game and made the FPS games just unplayable. First impression is that it’s fairly compact, about palm sized. Adding this capture card was super easy, the package included an ultra high speed HDMI cable and a USB-C cable. We just routed the new cable from the Playstation to the 4K X’s HDMI IN port and ran the existing HDMI cable from our monitor to the HDMI OUT port on the 4K X. I connected the USB-C cable to my laptop which provides power to the device, allows data transfer, and allows the signal pass through to work. Elgato provided instructions for recording on a PS5, the first thing you must do on a Playstation is go into Settings and click System, then select HDMI and toggle HDCP Enable to OFF. If you don’t do that you will have a black screen with no signal. After doing that, you should see your gaming screen on your PC and your monitor. Remember that you will need to toggle HDCP back on if you use your Playstation to play or stream movies or shows. That’s pretty much all there is to getting it started! I’m going to confess that I didn’t use Elgato’s 4K Capture software, I use OBS Studio so it was just a matter of selecting the Elgato as the source and my laptop was ready to record content. Pretty easy IMHO. One thing to note is that the pass through function doesn’t work unless the USB port is powered but it’s easy enough to reroute the HDMI cables to bypass the capture card if you don’t want to power it up between recording sessions. Once connected, we found the recorded content to be high quality and most importantly, we saw no discernible lag from the game controller input to the monitor display which was the whole reason for going to this device. We did notice that there was a tiny lag on my laptop’s screen and audio. It’s not an issue, but if you have the sound turned up on the laptop every time you shoot there’s an echo from the laptop. So we just turn the sound down on the laptop and it’s fine. Really happy with the performance of this device!

The Elgato 4K capture card is a top-tier choice for streamers and content creators who want crisp, high-quality footage with minimal setup hassle. It delivers stunning 4K resolution with excellent color accuracy and smooth passthrough, making it ideal for gaming on modern consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Its plug-and-play design works well with OBS and other recording software, though the Elgato Capture Utility can sometimes be glitchy or lag behind. The card performs best when paired with a strong PC and a fast USB-C connection, ensuring low latency and stable performance. While it’s on the pricier side, its professional-grade results and reliable build make it well worth the investment for anyone serious about creating polished, high-definition content.

After using the Elgato 4K X for the last few months, I can confidently say it’s not just an upgrade; it’s a complete game-changer. If you're serious about streaming or creating high-fidelity content from modern consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X, this is the capture card you've been waiting for. The Holy Grail: 4K144 HDR10 Passthrough The headline feature is, of course, the 4K resolution at a 144Hz refresh rate with HDR10. And let me tell you, it delivers. For years, I had to choose between playing my games in their full, beautiful, high-frame-rate glory or capturing them. With the 4K X, that compromise is gone. I can play God of War Ragnarök or Halo Infinite on my gaming monitor in stunning 4K HDR at 120Hz, experiencing every smooth frame and vibrant color exactly as the developers intended. Meanwhile, the card is seamlessly capturing a flawless, high-bitrate 4K60 HDR feed to my streaming PC. The peace of mind knowing my personal gameplay isn't being downgraded is worth the price alone. Flawless Performance and Ease of Use Setting up the 4K X was a breeze. It’s a simple USB-C connection to my PC (no internal PCIe slot required!), and it was recognized instantly in OBS Studio and the Elgato 4K Capture Utility software. The plug-and-play reliability has been rock solid. I’ve done multiple 6+ hour streaming sessions without a single dropped frame, disconnect, or software hiccup. The metal housing feels incredibly premium and it stays surprisingly cool to the touch even during long, intense sessions. It’s clear Elgato built this with durability and professional use in mind. Who Is This For? · PS5/Xbox Series X|S Power Users: This is the only card on the market that lets you fully utilize your console's 4K120Hz/HDR capabilities for yourself while capturing. · High-End Streamers: If you want your stream quality to be a cut above the rest, capturing in native 4K60 HDR gives you an incredible source to work with, even if you downscale to 1080p for the broadcast. The detail is unmatched. · Content Creators: The quality of the footage right out of the card is phenomenal, making it perfect for creating crisp, beautiful YouTube videos. Final Verdict The Elgato 4K X is a premium product with a premium price tag, but it is worth every single penny for the specific audience it targets. It eliminates the last major compromise for console streamers and delivers a level of performance and quality that feels genuinely future-proof. If you need the absolute best external capture card money can buy, your search ends here. It’s an impeccable piece of technology that has fundamentally improved my streaming workflow and enjoyment. 10/10.

Latest and Greatest option for a capture card

The Elgato 4K X is the latest release from Elgato's long line of capture card options. Elgato has always been a go-to option as they basically control the capture card market and always make a solid product. This 4K X is just another example of that. This capture card is about as simple to use as it gets and is basically plug and play. The 4K X comes with an 8K HDMI 2.1 cable and a USB 3.2 type c cable. To set the card up all you need to do is take the type-c cable and plug it into the card and a pc, plug the hdmi cable into whichever device you are trying to capture, run another HDMI cable to your monitor or tv, and download the elgato 4k capture utility software. So far everything is working great, the gameplay looks great and the sound comes through with no delay, which is awesome. Coming from my previous HD60 Pro, this is a huge upgrade in my overall quality capturing ability and now hypothetically, I should be able to use both to be able to stream from both my ps5 and another pc if I wanted to set up a racing sim and just have to switch in the utility software which device is getting captured. To Conclude, I think this is a great option for anyone looking for a high-end capture card able to capture 4k at 144hz or just someone looking to future proof their set-up. Outside of that, Elgato does offer a wide range of cards in multiple price points and for capturing other common resolutions.

I received the Elgato 4K X 4K144 HDR10 External Capture Card with HDMI 2.1 for PS5, PS4/Pro, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S, PC, and Mac in Black. It is housed in a small breakout box in plastic, with rubber feat upon its bottom side to ensure it doesn’t slide off of your desk. You get two HDMI 2.1 ports, here, which allow you to stream at up to 4K at 144Hz, or 1080p at 240Hz, and offers high framerate capture at high resolutions, you can also expect full-speed 4K 144Hz pass-through here, making it ideal for those looking to run it alongside a streaming PC with minimal lag. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack to monitor audio with no delay. Powering the device is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, Elgato includes two cables right in the box, one is a high-quality USB-C to C cable, and another is a HDMI 2.1 cable. These are both incredibly sturdy and clearly a cut above most other cables. Elgato 4K Capture Utility is simple, easy to understand, and quick and simple to set up. This should be the application you go to if you want to locally record, or take screenshots. All you need to do is configure the device as a Video Capture Device. Just remember that if you want to stream at high framerates, you’ll have to have the capacity to do so on Twitch and other platforms like YouTube. The Elgato 4K X is for content creators who demand top-notch quality. Whether you’re recording, streaming live gameplay, or creating video content, this capture card delivers outstanding performance. Plus, it looks sleek in black!

The beat capture card I have had in a long time! This 4k capture card deliver amazing quality and delivers what it promises. I have 2 different recording stations and might considering buying another one because its just that essential and works amazing. Also has audio jacks if you want to jack in woth headphones. Works perfect with OBS and Streamlabs but surprisingly not so well with the El Gato Capture Software. No issues with plug and play on OBS or Streamlabs. You will need to edit your streamlabs settings to output 4k resolution and other various details. Dive deep and you will have a great recording process in no time with this device.

Great capture card with a little trial and error

This is a nice little power-house of a capture card, and my first. It’s largely straightforward, but in my case, also presented a learning curve. Now that I spent a bit of time reading up on best software and tuning settings for my setup, it works well. The 4K X hardware itself is quite nice and comes with a great 8k HDMI cable, and quality USB cable -both in a woven style. I captured on a PS5 using a MacBook Pro and while there is a provided infographic on the inside of the box to indicate how to plug in the various cables, the lack of Quickstart guide and only a website reference for software download didn’t fully get me prepared for capturing video out-of-the-box. I did, however, have to find and read the FAQ for recording on PS5 to discover that HDCP setting on the console had to be turned off in order to connect and see any image. - I’m new to this, so these necessary steps could have been made more obvious. Elgato promotes using their 4k Capture Utility software on their website, but at the time of review, that wasn’t offered for Mac. I instead first used Quicktime, which really was easy to set up, but it my version didn’t allow for highest resolutions. Eventually I read up on other alternatives and discovered the more widely used OBS Studio (also downloadable from Elgato’s site) - This also posed a challenge, as for a while I wasn’t getting a signal from the 4K X. After some research, re-downloading and reinstalling, I discovered that I likely had a bad set of hidden library files. Sure enough, after deleting those and trying again, I was presented again with a list of permissions that OBS seemed to need in order to get things running. And while I also strangely didn’t hear any audio while recording, despite toggling that setting, it all came through well in the outputted video. This was the ticket, I’m fairly tech-savvy and once I got in, things largely just work now. Video capture is quite good and with plenty of control. There's little to no latency between what is actively being played and what is previewed during recordings on your computer. For such a small device, achieving such high frame rates and HDR10 recording is no small feat. I should note that I also attempted recordings on a Windows gaming laptop as well, but something was very off with the capture and audio every time. Given the large number of other people reporting no issue, I assume it must be our setup. 4k Capture Utility seemed partly to blame in that it defaulted to audio processing, which I needed to turn off at an OS level-application level. Overall, this card is a great offering for those looking to capture great content. Getting up and running as a newcomer had a variety of rough moments for me that could have been better directed by Elgato, but beyond that, it became straightforward. It's a very well designed capture device, with many people rightly praising its top-tier capabilities.
