Great budget Chromebook but buy a cooling pad

Picked this up on sale, great deal for $169. Needed it mainly for long Zoom meetings, also use it for some browsing & streaming. Be warned that it does heat up quite a bit after running for awhile, a little uncomfortable on the lap when it does. I solved this issue with a $20 Aluratek cooling pad from Best Buy, I left a review on that as well (BUY IT, works great and runs quiet). Screen quality could be better, need to look at it straight on for best view. But it's a budget Chromebook so I wasn't expecting to be wowed by the screen. As far as the size of the screen, it works fine for me and it makes it quite portable. Very lightweight. When in Zoom and swiping to where I see all the participants on video as well as myself, quality looks pretty good, I sit about 4 feet away generally and microphone seems to pick up my voice just fine. Chrome software and security updates are supported until June 2024, big plus for me. Comes with Google Perks too when you activate it, I got 3 months free of Disney+, Doom & Doom II free and free 30 day premium subscription to Calm app (there are other Perks as well but those are the ones I went with). Speakers ain't too shabby but again it's a budget Chromebook so don't expect to be wowed but they do the job for me. I love having so many ports, I can have my phone plugged into one USB C port while I use the other one to charge it, can access files on a thumb drive using one of the USB 3.0 ports as well as off of a microSD card, have headphones plugged into 3.5mm jack if I'm not using the Bluetooth while also having the cooling pad plugged into the other USB 3.0 port (which actually has a port on the plug so you don't lose access to it). All of this at the same time! Have to use WiFi as there is no ethernet port but haven't had any issues with it disconnecting, I live in a small apartment though so I'm never far from the router so can't speak on it cutting out in room in a house that's a ways away from the router. Trackpad is a little slow but easily fixed that with adjusting the speed in the settings. Overall, a great purchase if you're looking for something simple. Only major con as I mentioned is that it heats up but the cheap cooling pad fixed that. At regular MSRP of $219 some people may be willing to shell out a little more dough for a better model but when it goes on sale again, don't pass up the deal. Highly recommend.

The laptop itself seems fine but it was all scratched up when I took it out of the box and the plug looks like it was chewed on.

This is a Chromebook, not a full-powered Windows machine, so don't expect much memory or the ability to do much more than use Google apps. But because it's a Chromebook, it's immediately ready to go as soon you open it up. It charges quickly and uses little power so that charge lasts a long, long time. I bought it so my son will have his own device for remote learning, but I love it so much I use it all the time myself. It runs Zoom just fine. Because I already use Google Chrome, I was able to quickly set up the computer with my account and use it practically right out of the box. I'm thrilled with this little laptop.

I only use for basic web surfing and google docs. Does what I need it too. Speed is good for the price. If you need this for basic things its a great buy. Just be aware if you have 6-8 browser tabs open it could cause to freeze. Not everytime but sometimes

Just right for our shool's fifth grade requirement. It had to be a Chromebook, which was new to us. There was a little trouble with google profiles, but figured it out. The device seems like it will work well. My daughter loves it. You probably need the wireless mouse to buy separately. You might consider an SD card to supplement the storage. No issues so far.

This Chromebook is small but does the job for my kindergartner. She is able to type and do her online activities with a mouse that plugs into the USB port. Charges quickly. I am happy with our purchase-- and can't beat the price.

I think this is the ideal portable computer for the average (non-power) user that wants to be able to accomplish basic tasks like web-browsing, email and such. I had an old (nearly 6 years) 15.6" Windows laptop that had really reached the end of its life. I had purchased it not as my primary computer, but for travel and doing things like checking trail camera memory cards around my property. That computer cost over $600 new, was not high end when I bought it and was just a little too big and heavy to be "handy". When I started looking at replacement computers I initially narrowed it down to some $400-$500 windows models, but I was intrigued by the Chromebooks I was reading about. Last year my wife purchased a Chromebook just to "have a computer" to do certain tasks that her tablet was poor at or wouldn't do at all. It turned out to be a godsend when my son was required to do his last 3 months of school remotely. That Chromebook did EVERYTHING he needed to do, and while assisting him I discovered how simple and really slick the operation was. I found that things that I thought I wouldn't be able to live without moving from a windows laptop weren't missed at all. The fact that Android apps are available for Chromebooks now was a HUGE bonus as I had moved to Android tablets over the last few years and had already found some solid productivity app options. That experience changed my whole view of Chromebooks and I turned to looking for one for my own use. Enough background, how about this particular item- I am really happy with this computer and it has exceeded my expectations in some respects for well under $200 at purchase. Booting up is VERY fast. My personal or work windows laptop computers have never ever started up so quickly. Everything I have tried to do with this has performed faster than the $1000+ windows laptop that work provided me. Screen resolution may not be the pinnacle of display technology but it is clear enough for everything I have done with my old eyes and I actually have found that there is much less glare (key when taking it on the go outside) than I had on my older laptop with a much "better" screen. I thought I was really going to miss the screen size downsizing from the 15.6 but for what I have used it for I really haven't even noticed. I tried 2 competitor's Chromebooks before I purchased this one and the above items were pretty much the same for them, where this one impressed my enough to purchase over them was with the keyboard and the available ports. First, the keyboard is one of the best I have ever tried on any "budget" laptop with a very good feel to the keys, which while not "clicky" have a nice amount of tactile response and I have found excellent accuracy. I don't hammer the keys like some people, and on several keyboards I have tried over the years I have found that keys that are too "soft" often have me missing letters. I also will say that the keyboard is thin enough that my floating thumbs/pal/wrists never hit the trackpad, which was a constant annoyance on my old Windows machine, which had a very oversize, over-senstative touchpad. In terms of ports this unit has 2 USB 3.0, a micro-sd 3.5mm headset (phone/mic combo) and USB-C. The portsare well spaced so I can leave things plugged in without crowding and the inclusion of the USB-C (I only consider 1 as there are two but 1 is power input) at this price has proven to be an outstanding feature. Using a very inexpensive USB-C hub (sun $20) I already had I have added several additional port option (SD, Ethernet, USB 3, HDMI) and it has worked flawlessly. This USB C isn't something that I saw on comparably priced models from other manufacturers. Using the USB C hub I have used 1 port on the laptop for mouse nano receiver, 1 port for 256 gb nano flash drive, then 1 port on hub for wired USB number pad (laptop keyboard is tenkeyless), 1 port on hub for optical DVD drive with an SD card full of pictures plugged into the hub and everything has worked without trouble. It remains to be seen if this less than $200 laptop will continue to serve and survive as long as my old windows one did, and to be fair I have only had this a couple of weeks at this point, but so I far I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase and with the usefulness of this item in its intended role being a mobile supplement to my far more powerful desktop pc. I am not asking the world of it, but it has done everything I HAVE asked, and done it well.

Was trying to figure out what the best option was going to be for me after deciding to return to college. I'm not a tech savvy kind of person, so, I needed a device that was easy to set up and to operate and without too many bells and whistles. This HP Chormebook was definitely the right choice.

Really easy to use and the perfect size to fit into my backpack. Great for school (I use it for grad school). Only issue is that it heats up a few times (this is not an issue though since it hardly happens). I did have some problems about 2 weeks ago with a buzzing/static sound coming from my Chromebook, but I have not experienced that any longer since I restarted it. So basically minor issues. I recommend this to anyone who wants something small, simple, and easy.

The student who received this device has before only had school-issued devices and was a bit concerned about whether he would be able to take it with him to college (as a first generation student) and be able to get it started for use. He reports that everything went well and he loves his Chromebook!

He's taking it slow on what some of the apps do and focusing only on the ones he need now. And I want to thank you for having this computer available now. We are that much closer to being prepared if there's another school close.

It seemed to be well suited to the online programs that our school was using to do online schooling for our kids. Almost like it was preprogrammed to be ready to start school. The price was very good for younger kids who don't need a lot of computer but just enough to get them by. It will also last them a few years once they really need to start using computers even after going back to in the classroom learning

With virtual learning comes virtual meetings with teachers, doctors, counselors and even special needs classes such as speech and OT!!! While our local schools provide chrome books for students, I felt the need for my own for Zoom meetings and such. This HP chromebook works great! It holds a long battery charge, easy to set up and use and very portable. I’m happy with this purchase.

Bought for kids for fully-online elementary and middle school this year. So far, so good overall. Took very little time for kids to slow it down, and has had some connectivity to our WiFi (and we know it's not the router). However, Family Link is great, and overall, definitely meeting our needs.

It was just what I needed for my school. I got it sooner than I expected. It seems to be performing well so far. We needed Chrome Books for our students. The store was out of what I needed but restocked them quickly.

My grandson lives in an area where they do not furnish chromebooks to students and with Covid, he was doing virtual school half time so this really helps him do his work and be able to send to teacher and keep up with assignments.
