This is my 4th version of this printer and laptop be it.

It took the geek squad over 2 hours to set up. Now it drops connection to my wifi for no reason and I have to restart the printer and my laptop to get it to print. Also tray 2 wont open. Was on with geek squad for more than 2 hours and they cant fix that....have to take back to store. Which I cant do it is too heavy so my only option is to pay to have someone come to my house. I am already paying for the geek squad support and now I have to pay more...I am not the least bit happy with this purchase.

Love all the functions and the double paper drawer

Just an average printer. I was expecting significant improvement over the prior version of this printer, the 8710 as it was a disaster (went through 3 print heads in a year). I have had less breakdowns but I wished I would have went with the Epson WF 4640. The ink cost for this printer is outrages and there no generic ink available as HP has locked down the printer with its firmware forcing you to use the HP Instant Ink Program or HP original cartridges. $75 for four regular HP cartridges or $125 for XL cartridges. Or if you want generic ink you have to buy the kits and try refill the HP cartridges yourself before they are empty.

My printer is my life. As a screenwriter I'm printing anywhere from 150 to 500 pages per session. My printer simply has to work. The officejet pro 8740 is a great printer. It's a bit tricky to set up and HP has made it difficult for a beginner to get it working properly. The ink subscription is more or less a scam. Make sure that when setting up your printer that you turn off the printer sending your page count back to hp or you'll be wasting money when they deactivate your printer because you have too many pages. This is the one issue that I had with the printer and I take away one star for it. But I've had none of the other problems such as the wireless failing or the sleep mode issue that some other people have encountered. Overall it's an excellent printer.

Printer does not connect to wifi without needing to be rest frequently, poor double sided print quality, and poor quality of pictures whether on photo appear or regular paper.

Love the printer its easy to connect and Get started. Its really quick on printing photos and docs.. Takes good quality prints and scans. Features like scan to email and scan to network folder on the printer itself takes time to setup but once its setup works lovely. Now here is the down side when you print photos from windows the 8740 driver doesn't have border less photo feature with it. There is a fix but your going to have to make some adjustments in the printer settings by downloading 8720 driver and using it for your 8740 printer in order to get to print out photos without a white border around the picture. Other than this issue its a awesome printer works well with my smartphone and very nice to have full control of your printer from anywhere you are located even if your away from home you can print still. Oh and the instant ink program is awesome too love it saves money!!!

Could not get rid of paper tray error, returned it

In month 13 of use the print quality diminished to unreadable...I called HP, they told me that it was a machine failure that was not fixable and since the printer was out of warranty there was nothing they could do about it. Then they had the nerve to convince me to buy an upgraded printer at a deeply discounted price that "would not fail me." The price they offered was higher price than the price at Best Buy Amazon! Save yourself the money and frustration and buy another brand!

If a printer has the following description, "HP - OfficeJet Pro 8740 Wireless All-In-One Instant Ink Ready Printer - Black," what color do you think it is??? If you guessed Black, you are wrong! It is white. Very disappointing to miss such a basic descriptor and it is such a hassle to return such a large item. I'll likely keep it because it will print just the same and it will be a daily reminder to not trust Best Buy descriptions.

This is really great unit, but the Wi-Fi connectivity seems erratic. Need to reboot printer and laptops much too often. The 8720 is a much better deal if you don't need two trays and legal paper capability
