Cannot think of a better laptop.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used several laptops in last ten years or so, including two of HP brand and two of other brands. So far Spectre X360 out performs all, including laptops (other brands) owned by my friends. Blazing speed and ultralight are the most important features. 256GB hard drive is acceptable since you can always store large files in the cloud. I cannot think of a better laptop in terms of style, and technology.

HP almost recaptures past glory
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a good portion of my life, the name Hewlett-Packard was synonymous with computing. In the 1970s, I switched from using a slide rule in my science courses to one of HP’s first scientific calculators. During the 1990s I found Hewlett-Packard home computers to be among the best available. When my mother custom-built the best system she could for desktop publishing, she didn’t go with IBM or Apple, but with HP. The Pavillion desktop system she had constructed was both monstrous in terms of processing power and gorgeous in design. HP systems were real winners. Somewhere along the line (maybe when they merged with Compaq) HP lost its glamour. I considered their desktops and laptops to be very middle-of-the-road, functional machines, but nothing special. I always purchased another brand. Then I decided to give HP a chance by trying out their super-slim, powerful HP Spectre x360 Convertible (13-w013dx). And I have to say, it looks like HP is back. Maybe not at the very, very top of the heap, but definitely in the mix with ultrabooks by Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung. It is certainly light and thin—the thinnest core i7 laptop in the market during 2016. It is super-quiet, too. After three days of use, I never heard a sound from the machine and I wondered if its fan was broken or if it even had a fan! Finally, after some intensive work on the third day the fan came on for a while, but it has not since then. It runs remarkably cool for a machine with a core i7 processor. With this processor and the solid-state hard drive, the HP Spectre x360 is lightning-fast as well as quiet. It is almost eerie what this laptop can do without seeming to break a sweat. But let me back up to the beginning of my encounter with this powerful, quick, quiet machine. The unboxing process was very undramatic. Upon opening the plain, black box, all I found was the computer, a few papers including a two-page quick setup/quick tour guide, the power adapter, and a sleeve. Very basic, no frills. The two-page guide was plenty sufficient to get started, and on first boot I was led quickly and efficiently through the setup process to get the laptop ready to use. I went with the face recognition login process, and works beautifully. There is virtually no bloatware; just a few HP apps/tools, a few games, a trial version of McAfee LiveSafe (Why? Isn’t the free, MS-supported Windows Defender enough?) and a free month of Office 365. (McAfee is already installed; the system keeps nagging you to try Office 365.) So, back to performance. The backlit keyboard contains nice, large keys that feel good as I type. No keypad to save space, but that’s okay. One odd thing is that the top row of function keys is set to some predefined functions so you have to hit <shift> to get a plain function key. For example, if I want to change the name of a file, I have to hit <shift>-F2 because simply hitting the F2 key dims the screen. That is backwards from what I am used to, but I’m sure I’ll adapt. The mousepad is as good as these things get I suppose. I much prefer an external mouse with a scroll key and multiple buttons and only use the pad in emergencies. Or when I am doing a product review. But if I use an external mouse I have just used up the single USB Type A port. There are two additional USB Type C /Thunderbolt ports, one of which serves as the input for the external power supply. There is no HDMI port, so if you want to use an external monitor you’ll need to use a USB C to HDMI adapter. Hey, I love USB C and am sad that I have to return my flammable Note 7 with its Type C port. But at least the Note came with adapters; for the Spectre you will have to buy your own. The screen is pretty enough and has a 1920x1080 resolution. I have always used 15” screen laptops in the past and wondered if a 13” screen would feel too small. It does not. The picture I took with the camera looked very mediocre to me. My phone takes way better photos. The sound of the Bang & Olufsen audio is very typical for a laptop, that is, tinny and not so great. I would use the external speakers for music only if I did not have a pair of headphones. Wanting to see how the audio sounded through my Bose Bluetooth headphones, this gave me a chance to try the Bluetooth capabilities of the Spectre. I must say that connecting my headphones almost gave me a headache. This might be partly due to the way Windows 10 manages Bluetooth devices, but in any case it took me over 20 minutes to get connected. Once I did, the sound was very nice—way better than with the external speakers. The last thing I wanted to write about in this review was the tablet mode of the Spectre. I have been wanting a laptop with a touchscreen for a long time because I’ve become so accustomed to running apps by touch on my Samsung phone and tablet. Now I finally had that chance. The touchscreen works great in laptop mode, and every once in a while I do feel like touching the screen instead of pointing and clicking with the mouse. Converting to tablet mode is as simple as opening the screen all the way until it flips over completely, touching the back of the laptop. A prompt asks if I want to enter tablet mode automatically every time I do this or whether I want to be asked. Same with reverting back to laptop mode. It’s nice to have that choice. Once in tablet mode, however, I felt very uncomfortable. I never really did like the Windows 8 metro interface and am still not thrilled about it. Working in this mode with Windows is just different from working with apps in Android. I found myself getting stuck in apps with no idea how to exit out. I also did not like the feel of the keys squishing around on the bottom as I held the device. So I don’t envision using this feature much unless I get used to these things. If you are a metro fan you might feel differently about this. All-in-all, my experiences with the Spectre x360 Convertible lead me to say that HP is back. This trim, powerful, quiet machine looks nice and is a great performer. I can easily recommend it as somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.

Needed a laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wanted to get rid of my desktop so I figured it was time to get myself a laptop. I wanted to stray from Apple products so I saw this and immediately had to snatch it. I mean I guess it's good to have because of the cool features (tablet mode) but this thing gets hot so easily and I kind of wish I got an Apple laptop.

Disappointing let-down and overall irritated
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was originally a Dell user, switched to HP and fell in love. However, this Spectre laptop is the death of that loyalty and admiration I have had for HP products. Purchased this deal on Black Friday (2016), within a few months it began to act up. The mouse would freeze on areas, randomly repeatedly click areas, the screen would flash and blink, and I couldn't do anything except shut it down and restart. This happened on a daily basis but I was in a bind because I was in the middle of grad school and NEEDED this laptop. So I couldn't trade it in or be without it for the two weeks they (tech support) were suggesting I would be without a laptop. So I made due until the semester was over. The laptop began to overheat and began massive clicking and freezing even worse before it finally came time to switch it (withing the one year warranty). They swapped it out for me, no issues with that process BUT NOW I'm having the SAME issues with my current laptop they switched! It has now surpassed the "1 year warranty" period, and I'm at a loss. I'm stuck with this irrationally behaved laptop which has even worse issues than the previous one. The new problems are now flat out difficulty operating the machine due to spyware prohibiting nearly everything from operating on the machine, it blocks all of the folders and will not allow me to save certain items. Also have warning pop ups when I try to save Word documents, says "file cannot be found" and an application, VirtualBookshelf, that I have downloaded to my laptop does not allow me to open it. Says I have to uninstall before using it but it won't allow me to re-download it, again, says "file not found" to download it to. So with repeated issues, and technical support unable to assist because: Microsoft tells me it is an HP issue, HP tells me it is an operating system issue, and VirtualBookshelf techs say it's an operating issue. I'm ping-ponged back and forth with no one taking accountability. The second (replacement) laptop has already been wiped once to resolve the above mentioned issues, only for it to occur again. At a total loss now, with a worthless laptop no one can A). Fix or B). Return/Replace or C). Even explain what is occurring. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE PURCHASE THIS SATANIC MODEL OF A LAPTOP. YOU'RE BETTER OFF WITH A ROCK, CHISELING YOUR HOMEWORK.

Great laptop!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After having a Lenovo laptop previously, my expectations for a new laptop were high considering my Lenovo stopped working after just 2 yrs (and would cost $600 to repair). I spent a lot of time researching and reading reviews. This laptop exceeds my expectations. It's incredibly thin, lightweight, great speakers and FAST! I think I will stick with HP's from now on!

A Fantastic PC!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been using this 2 in 1 daily for the last 5 months and it is nothing short of amazing. It is powerful and has a great display. The tablet mode is great and screen is just right size. The only thing it lacks is support for an active stylus. I believe the newer version does support it so maybe I should have waited.

Absolutely AMAZING!!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computer is seriously amazing! HP did a great job with the redesign and they were able to fit a 13.3 inch screen in a form factor that is closer to an 11.6 inch laptop. Everything about it feels ultra premium and well thought out. The screen's color and clarity is fantastic and it looks even more amazing since there are almost no bezels on the sides. The Bang & Olufsen speakers sound great and can get very loud (I changed the equalizer to "live" to improve the out of the box sound). Typing is great also, the keyboard travel is perfect and the spacing seems excellent. The glass trackpad is very responsive and the perfect size for gestures. The geared hinges are so smooth and really do a great job of holding the screen exactly where you want it. Most importantly, the performance, this is the fastest computer I've ever used. It does everything I need it to do so effortlessly and opens programs without any hesitation. Its definitely a multi-use powerhouse. Battery life is great also, it'll easily make it through a full day of work and since you recharge it through a USB-C port its able to support fast charging so it'll recharge to about 90% in just 90 minutes. And if you have a phone or other device that uses USB-C you're able to charge it directly from the computer at full speed even if the computer isn't on (and since USB-C is a specific standard you're actually able to use the supplied AC adapter to charge that same phone or other device without any issues). If you're looking for a Windows laptop with Apple level of engineering and obsessive attention to detail, this is definitely the one for you!
