The quality of this Warrior's game is insane. Loved Age of Calamity, and I still think I like it better than this one. However, this is certainly the best game to follow Age of Calamity. The gameplay feels fluid, the animations are crisp, and the art style is shining at a very high degree in this game. Hyrule Warriors already put Warriors games to a new and cool standard for me, so it's nice to see this off-shoot of two franchises keeping up with one superb entry after another. Best way to get more Zelda before the next main Zelda game.

As I’m nearing my playthrough, the game is a huge step up from the previous hyrule warriors. I also recommend this game for anyone who was wanting the canon story of the imprisonment war that wasn’t fully explored in tears of the kingdom.

I loved that Age of Imprisonment dives into the previously unseen “Imprisoning War” — telling a piece of lore from the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom back-story — and gives fans a “canon” glimpse at the events leading up to that game.

The inclusion of iconic characters like Princess Zelda and King Rauru fighting alongside new heroes felt epic and emotionally satisfying.

Combat & Gameplay:
As a “musou”-style game (hundreds of enemies at once), the combat feels great — fast, satisfying, and chaotic in the best way.

On Switch 2 especially, battles run much more smoothly than past entries: single-player mode hits 60 FPS most of the time.

Enemy hordes, flashy animations, and special moves give a real sense of power when you wipe out a group or take down a boss.
Visuals & Performance:
Graphically it’s solid for a musou game — the world of Hyrule feels alive, and there’s a real sense of scale when you charge across battlefields.

The Switch 2 upgrade helped a ton: frame rate is stable much of the time, which makes fights feel more fluid than what we saw in older entries.

That said — cutscenes and lower-action moments betray some compromises: resolution can dip (especially in handheld or during cutscenes), and some of the lower-res or uneven pacing in cutscenes feels a little rough compared to gameplay.

Replayability & Content:
There’s a decent amount to dig into post-campaign: lots of characters to unlock, side content, harder difficulties, and completionist challenges that keep things fresh if you like messing with builds or replaying missions.

The co-op (split-screen) and “GameShare” multiplayer add value if you want to play with a friend.

The Downsides:
The mission/map design gets kind of generic — many levels feel like “go here, clear enemies, move on,” without a lot of strategic variety or memorable level layouts.
Nintendo Life
+1
Repetition is almost baked in: once you’ve done a few chapters, the formula of “wave after wave” starts to feel predictable.
Kotaku

For fans hoping for a sprawling, open-world Zelda experience — this isn’t it. It’s very much a musou action-game dressed in Zelda garb, which will click if you like the genre but not if you expect exploration or deep RPG-style progression.
Verdict:
If you’re a fan of the Zelda universe and enjoy action-heavy “hack-and-slash” / musou-style gameplay, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a great pick. It brings a canonical chapter of Hyrule's history to life, delivers satisfying combat, and benefits from a big performance boost on the Switch 2. It’s not perfect — its repetitive structure and classic musou-style map design hold it back from greatness — but for what it aims to do, it succeeds with flying colors. Solid 4-star action fun.

Hurdle warrior: The 5 star calamity

From the first charge into battle to the final echoes of the Calamity, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity delivers one of the most memorable, emotionally resonant Musou games ever made. It’s a rare sequel/spin-off that not only honors its source material (Breath of the Wild) but expands it in bold, inspired ways.
Gameplay: Addictive and Always Exciting
At its heart, Age of Calamity is a Musou (Warriors) game — and it executes that formula near-perfectly. The combat is fast, fluid, and endlessly satisfying:
• Each character feels different thanks to distinct weapon styles, abilities, and combat flow.
• Battles are large, chaotic, and thrilling — with dozens of foes clogging the screen, special attacks raining fire, and boss fights that demand both reflex and strategy.
• The addition of mechanics like Updrafts, Runes, and Mounted Combat keeps encounters from ever feeling stale.
Even after dozens of hours, I found myself thinking “just one more battle” more than once — a hallmark of truly engaging gameplay.
Narrative: A Rich Prequel with Heart
What elevates Age of Calamity above your typical Warriors game is its story. Set 100 years before Breath of the Wild, it explores the Great Calamity — the pivotal conflict that reshaped Hyrule. The narrative:
• Expands beloved characters like Mipha, Daruk, Revali, and Urbosa, giving them emotional arcs that feel earned.
• Offers new perspectives on familiar faces (Link, Zelda) while weaving in fresh lore that enhances the Zelda mythos.
• Balances tragedy, triumph, and camaraderie with surprising depth — even managing heartfelt moments that genuinely moved me.
The story missions are framed like chapters in a tragic, heroic epic — and the game’s pacing keeps the emotional stakes high throughout.
Presentation and Aesthetic: Stunning and Stylish
Visually, Age of Calamity finds a beautiful balance between the painterly charm of Breath of the Wild and the kinetic spectacle of Warriors battles:
• The art direction feels faithful to Hyrule’s world — grassy fields, ruined strongholds, and divine beasts all come alive in motion.
• Character animations are expressive; every dash, flurry, and special attack looks great.
• The UI and menus are intuitive, making even complex missions easy to manage.
The soundtrack is equally impressive — atmospheric when it needs to be, bombastic when the battlefield calls for it. Familiar Zelda themes are woven in with fresh arrangements that always fit the tone.
Additional Features: Deep and Meaningful
There’s more here than just the main campaign:
• Base building and upgrades give a rewarding layer of progression.
• Side missions and character quests flesh out the cast and offer varied objectives beyond “defeat all enemies.”
• The game encourages experimentation with team compositions and strategies — making it fun for completionists and casual players alike.
Final Thoughts
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a must-play for fans of The Legend of Zelda and Warriors action alike. It blends frenetic gameplay with an emotionally rich story, wrapped in a gorgeous, lovingly crafted world. It’s the rare spin-off that improves upon its inspirations — and does so with confidence and heart

Warriors style prequel to Tears of the Kingdom. And yes, it is Canon to the Wild Era Zelda games. If you played a Warriors style game before you know exactly what you are getting into, if not it's a few characters verus an army. There are Tears of the Kingdom elements in the game along with a few characters from the memories of Tears of the Kingdom. You fight alongside Zelda, King Rauro, and the other sages and characters in the Imprisoning War to seal away Ganondorf. Each character has a unique skillset and ablilites that get enhanced and stronger as you progress through the game. You can choose to play it on easy or if you want a real challenge crank it up to hard or very hard. You'll spend hours upon hours playing through the game.

Another solid entry in the Hyrule Warriors series. Unlike the prior game, this has a much more stable frame rate, and feels a bit more put together. The new characters and environments add a lot of variance to the missions, and the storytelling is enjoyable.
