Customers consistently note the 40" Class LED HDTV's excellent picture quality and reasonable price. Many are pleased with the easy setup process, while gamers appreciate its suitability for gaming consoles. However, some customers have concerns about the TV's smart features, low volume, remote control issues, short lifespan, and washed-out colors.

SHORT REVIEW: Excellent 2nd HDTV or 1st HDTV for a Thrifty Consumer.
LONG-WINDED REVIEW: I will begin by stating I own Insignia’s NS-32D311NA17 (32 inch 720p) in a living room used occasionally and Insignia’s NS-39D310NA19 (39 inch 720p) HDTV in our bedroom used every night. Our primary family room HDTV is a Sony XBR55X850D that actually gets the lion share of our viewing.
Had a 10 year old 32 inch Toshiba in our finished attic guest room, but gave that to my daughter and was looking for a replacement. I was so impressed with the 39” Insignia in our bedroom, that I was ready to purchase another one of those to replace the Toshiba I gave my daughter.
Now this 40 inch 1080p was one of Best Buy’s Deal of the Day sales at the same price I was ready to pay for the 39”. So it was a no-brainer quick online order with same day local pickup. Well once setup and adjusted, I couldn’t be more pleased with the 40D510NA19 vs. the 39D310NA19 with an extra inch in size, three HDMI ports (one is ARC), 1080p vs. 720p resolution, much higher contrast ratio (5,000:1 vs. 3,000:1), and with 40% increase in audio output (7 watts per channel vs. 5 watts per channel).
I am using a small indoor HD12 ClearView flat antenna that pulls in around 35 channels without pixilation (room is a 3rd floor finished attic in Raleigh NC). Also using a Sony smart BluRay/DVD player that I use to access streaming services, cast from mobile devices, and playing DVD’s or BR’s through this HDTV. I do have the audio output to an amp connected to a set of 2.1 speakers, but the stock speakers sound very good when used in our enclosed wall unit. I would assume wall mounting would diminish the audio and you would require some type of sound-bar. But truthfully, I have not heard any current Flat-Panel HDTV's who's speakers provide anything more than something temporary to use until you connect a decent sound bar or dedicated system.
VA vs. IPS Panel: Because this LCD HDTV being a VA (Vertical Alignment) flat panel, both the contrast (5000:1) and brightness are above average. The major trade off between a VA and IPS (In Plane Switching) panel is the VA will loose color off axis (seated/viewing on an angle) very quickly vs. the IPS will maintain color better off axis at the expense of lower contrast ratio and lower brightness (not good for a dark room). Although most “Specs” do not state the type of panel, you can somewhat assume those with maximum contrast ratios above 2500:1 are probably a VA panel and anything below 1500:1 are probably an IPS panel.
Now similar to my other two Insignia’s, I did have to manually adjust and tone down the overly saturated colors. None of the default display choices looked natural to me in any lightly conditions. (See attached pictures for the Custom Color settings that worked for me in a dimly lighted room.) Once adjusted for my environment, I am thoroughly impressed at the price point for this “entry level HDTV”.
I do wish it had a higher Refresh Rate than the native 60Hz and maybe better off axis viewing angle. But hey, that is what my Sony XBR is used for…
Are there better HDTV’s available? Certainly there are with additional features galore if required by the user. But for either the occasional viewer, or the thrifty consumer, this one is very hard to beat HDTV. Is it for everyone; probably not. Is this the HDTV for you? Maybe…

I purchased this 1080p lcd tv for my parents, for a early Christmas gift for theyre bedroom. The tv was wall mounted to a Sanus mount.
The color and quality are very nice for only 149.99 on black friday. This is a no frills tv, as in not smart or internet connected. But the small price it has a good picture and colors.

I caught this TV on Black Friday. I am so glad I did. The setup was easy, no registering required due to Insignia being exclusive with Best Buy. The picture and sound quality is awesome as well. Thank you for being the perfect TV replacement for the bedroom!

I can't tell much of a difference between my 4k TVs and my 1080p TVs. I am not sure if that's a compliment to my 1080's or an insult to my 4ks. What I can say is this has a bright, clear picture, works great with my ROKU stick and has vibrant colors and a nice, crisp picture. For a flat screen TV, the sound is very good - clear and loud. If you stream everything like I do (no cable TV) you may be subject to data caps like I am from Xfinity. Did you know one 4 k tv uses as much data as four 1080p tvs? Yes, it is true. I had to go to unlimited $$$ as soon as I bought my first 4k set. Anyway, this is my 3rd Insignia and I've had excellent results with all of them. The oldest is 8 years old, maybe older and is still going strong. Of the 3, I like this best. Highly recommended.

I bought this television for $160 for the bedroom. I freaking love it! 40 inches is a nice size for a bedroom, mount it on the wall with a mount from Monoprice. As previous reviews stated the speakers are typical flat-panel speakers which lack bass and can sound tingy. The surround option works surprisingly well considering Insignia is a lower end manufacturer. If you sit in the right place against a wall to watch the sound will bounce and you will swear there are speakers behind you. However, it is a bedroom so the sound isn't critical. There is black level banding which is typical in most HDTVs. I have a 55 inch toshiba that is about equal to a little better than the insignia picture and not close to, say, a Sony bravia. However, recently owned an LG 4k of last year's model and this Insignia looks better than that television did, which I took back. So, more expensive isn't always better. The way I see it, I got a 40 inch HDTV for $160, I paid $1700 for my first flat panel HDTV ever which was a panasonic plasma so, heck, pocket change. I was a video production major in college so I am tuned into quality of video replication so, considering that 4k has taken over and 4k broadcast isn't prevalent yet, my advice is you will be much happier with a cheap HDTV than an expensive 4k OLED purely due to how much you spent on it if you will be watching it in the bedroom. HD still looks great to me at 40 inches. If you are going big, say 65 or 70, then I would invest in a higher quality television as broadcasts will eventually catch up to the television capabilities. For the bedroom though, get this one because of the price and spend more money on a tv that you will be entertaining on in the family room with the speaker system.

Our family was looking for a cost-effective TV upgrade for our son. Works great for TV watching and gaming. However, this TV is limited to 1080P, so if you have the next-gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series S/X, etc.) you may want to look at getting a 4K TV. Easy set-up out-of-the-box; you may need, as with many TVs, to adjust your picture quality settings to match room settings (is it more dark, light, etc.) Overall, for the price, great TV!

I went to Best Buy to look for a tv for my son, I needed a big screen and a few hdmi ports because he not only watches tv programs on it but uses it for his online gaming. He wanted the big screen and at least 1080p for a bright picture. This tv worked perfectly! It was easy to set up and he had it working in no time. I also had a very good Best Buy associate help me while in the store. He helped me find this tv that was in my price range and had the features my son wanted.

I love the size of this t.v., it fits perfectly in our little living room. The picture is decent and it doesn't give me a migraine like some of the newer technology. The only complaint I have is that the sound mutes randomly. Easily fixed by hitting the volume button, but still not cool and the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars.

This 40 inch insignia is a good tv at the 199 price point. It doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles like a smart tv but it gets the job done. My son is able to see a clear and bright screen. The picture is good. He is able to connect his Roku device to it for streaming just like the other TVs. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a tv and you want good quality, this tv is perfect for you.

I was skeptical about this TV because of the low price. I know it is Best Buy’s own brand. My Samsung broke and I needed to replace it right away. I was thrilled to see that the picture sound quality of this TV was just as good as the Samsung. It was extremely easy to hook up and with a few tweaks in the settings got the picture to be exactly how I like it. It’s vivid, very sharp and the sound is not at all tinny. Great TV! In fact, I just ordered another one for the guest room! Thank you Best Buy.
