I remember as a kid when portable cd players first came out. I remember when the technology improved, and they became skip resistant. Over the years, I had several different portable cd players, but they all became obsolete with time. I recently purchased a new version of an audio Bible, and I needed a method to be able to listen to the cd's in a variety of different places. I first used an external cd drive connected to different computers, but this was a hassle to setup. I then used a portable dvd player (wth built-in speakers), but that was a hassle for a variety of reasons too. I considered ripping the tracks to mp3, but that was a hassle and time-consuming. This Insignia portable cd player is a perfect answer. I've got a small speaker I'm using with the headphone connection, and now for a low price I've got a convenient way of listening to the cd's in a variety of places. It's also very convenient that it runs on batteries because that makes it even more versatile and "self-sustainable" (you can plug it in though if you've got your own adapter). It's got all the basic features you need in regards to skip protection, track skipping, fast forward/rewind, shuffle, repeat track, repeat album, intro mode (not sure what the point of this ever was, but hey), and a HOLD mode that makes it so none of the buttons respond if you push them (i.e. if you've got it in your pocket or something). I also like that it DOESN'T have a radio as many of the other ones in the lower price range have. I would never use the radio, and the ones that have the radio are just a little more bulky (plus that's potentially one more thing that could malfunction over time). This one is small and light. Overall, I'm glad this Insignia option was available. If you need a simple solution for playing cd's on the move, you can't go wrong with this Insignia portable cd player. Hope this helps. Thanks. read all the reviews. Knew issue with not being able to return to where you left off, and it not being able to fast forward thru a track. You have to start thru the track and listen until you can find your place. Not sure there are reasonable priced players that do that anymore. You can set it to play first 10 seconds or so of every track, until you find the track you left off at, which is time consuming. I've not tried that feature, though the booklet does say that setting eats up battery life. I don't worry because I have an adapter from an old Sony Walkman which was amazing, or I use rechargeable batteries. Be that as it may, reading the booklet was not easy given it's print size; I had to read it twice to understand everything, which is not usual for me. I use my player solely for audio books due to visual issues. I did read about skip problems, so enabled that function. However, with it on, the lightest brush, or movement, and I do mean lighttest, including reaching over but not touching the machine, caused it to shut down. And then you have to restart and hope you saw where it was, track wise. That was unexpected and a big disappointment. I discovered however, illogically, that if I did not use the anti-skip feature, the problem went away. Bought it the beginning of August and used it every night for 8+ hours for the first 2 weeks until my first library download came in. Like the machine. Very good sound quality for books, which is it's total use. Cannot address any other useage. I considered the 10.99 machine, and buying 2, but have had very limited life spans with them previously, and if I opened both, the warranty period would be an issue. Any way, decided on this, and opted for the 2 year warranty @ 6.99. Looked at the more expensive model, but the only difference I could find was the radio, and do not need that. Was very impressed with the more recent, at that time, responses from Insignia when people had problems, difficulties or were not satisfied with their purchase. Made me feel more confident in the product,

    A Solid Portable CD Player

In this day and age, portable CD players aren't as in vogue as they used to be but they, nevertheless, still serve a purpose. I am one of those music listeners that enjoys reading through the lyric sheet and absorbing the artwork of an album when I listen to it for the first time and this Insignia CD player has come in handy for that time and time again. In short, anyone who doesn't have a sound system they can exploit while listening to a CD will find this item to be quite useful. This portable CD player comes with the standard features one expects from this kind of device - skip protection, volume control, bass boost and the like. It's made of a sturdy plastic, resilient to the wear and tear carrying it in a backpack would potentially cause it otherwise (something I can attest to from personal experience). While there is a bass boost, there aren't any other audio options available which would have been appreciated since I generally like to "tweak" the sound as much as possible. Thankfully, however, the inherent sound of this Insignia device is clear, concise and robust, at least from the experience I have had listening to predominantly "heavy" albums; I expect that the sound will be balanced for most music genres, however. Also, the battery life is pretty good - this device won't be eating your double A batteries left and right or anything, but it is a good idea to keep a few handy anyway. Simply put, this is the best affordable portable CD player I could find on the market a year or so ago and I've yet to have any issues with it. Had I the option, I probably would have given this CD player a 4.5 just because I would liked to have had more audio options but that's just a personal gripe, really, which is why I rounded up and give it a five. After a year of frequent use, I can say that this is a durable, reliable CD player that is recommended to anyone with a need for one!

This twenty dollar baby really rocks! I bought this at Best Buy only a few days after another player (a name brand) just didn't cut it. I use it mostly when I'm running, so my first test was, hop on the treadmill at the gym and see if the player skips. Nope, not a bar of music lost. It also became immediately apparent that the quality of the sound was impressive; I used Sennheiser PMX80 behind the ear sport phones and the music was sweet. Then I got the player home, and hooked it up through the "Line Out" jack to my sound system; a very good feature I might add.. "Hah," I thought, "this will turn the sound from the Insignia to dust." NOPE! Even through my high-end system, it sounded great. Admittedly, a bit less in bass than my component cd player, but not enough to justify the some $480 difference in price! Still totally impressed. Final test: play it through a set of the studio quality cans I have. Again, totally impressed by the excellent sound quality. Oh, by the way, the CD I played for all my tests had many complex passages. Insignia handled them extremely well. So, bottom line....If you need a new new portable CD player, and have an extra twenty some-odd bucks kickin' around, I can't see how you could do any better than this one.

Subsitute for missing CD player in new car

New car did not have a CD player. I like to listen to audiobooks, which come on CDs. Bought this item to play CDS. It is very basic. Played through AUX cable into the car, the sound is Very good, no problems there. This item does not have the capability of holding the place in the CD, so I have to keep track of where it stops every time I stop it and then fast forward back to the spot. Royal pain. You can pause it and pick up, but if you are stopping on a road trip for lunch, you don't want the batteries to run down unnecessarily. It would be good if this would get electricity through the car, but in order to use the cigarette outlet, you have to do through a couple of transitions, the gadgets for which cost almost $50, so I am running it on batteries. The good news is that a set of batteries seems to last about 10 hours. If all the new cars are not having CD players, then someone should invent something like this that could be plugged into either the cigarette lighter directly or the USB port and which would hold its position when the car turns off.

This product was purchased to work as a "replacement" CD player on a Bose Wave radio where the CD had failed. Since there is a line out for a 3.5mm jack on this little machine, it can connect to the radio through the aux. It sounds really, really good that way. The controls are very intuitive and built around the LED display. The included manual explains in detail how to work all the programming buttons, too. Also, there is an option to work off DC power and since I still have a changeable voltage Radio Shack adapter from a portable cassette I used to have, I was delighted to see that it fits and works on this at 4.5 voltage. Why buy a CD player? Sometimes you just wanna play your CD's (Nightwish gave away "Decades" at their recent concert) without the extra effort of starting up a tablet or firing up a computer or laptop to play them that way. This is completely worth it for the price and I received mine for $5.00 off with a gift certificate. Good job, Insignia!

Bought this to be a stand-in for a CD player that had spun too many times, anyway , good CD player, nothing too amazing except the good anti-skip buffer and my model does have a line level out, if you want to connect to a stereo receiver/amp. Haven’t used it heavily but under moderate use it holds its own, though has one downside, which was that it didn’t come with an AC adapter for the wall socket, which you would think it would, as I hate using batteries. But that was easily remedied by going to Amazon and buying one, matching mA and voltage input. I’ve had it for a couple years , no trouble. Hint, matching mA and voltage levels for the ac adapter is critical, as it will mean either good long product life, or a shorter one. So anyway I think I just splurged for a Audiovox multi volt selecter model. Plug fits great into the insignia CD player. That’s about all I have. To my knowledge the CD player may or may not play cd-r discs. Read literature online for details, always research before a purchase!

Let me say right off that for the money this little player is hard to beat. Unlike the competition the display on this player is large enough to be read easily. With the esp function on and 2500 ma NiMD batteries you get to hear 12 to 16 disc's before a low battery warning appears on the display. Unfortunately this function must be tied to error correction. I have several CD's that were loaned out and came back badly scratched that will not play on my PIONEER home player. On this little player with the esp function on they play just fine! Through my SENNHEISER phones the sound seems quit good. As mentioned by other reviewers this player has no memory resume. The good part of this is there is no battery drain to support this function. Also lacking is a random play repeat. You either get random play or repeat play, but for the price this is not a serious flaw. I've only had the player a couple of weeks so I can't really comment on durability, but at one fifth of the price of my last portable player I can afford to replace this player easily.

Purchased this unit today. The first unit I obtained, the STOP button did not work at all. I returned it to the Best Buy store and exchanged it for another one. The second unit works great - no problems at all. I might add the customer service representative was extremely helpful in making the exchange. I was extremely pleased with their service and support. Putting in and taking out the CD is extremely easy and the buttons are easy and simple to use. The sound through the provided earphones is more than adequate. They certainly will not satisfy the audio aficionado but they hold their own in regards to clarity of sound and the overall cost of the player. The unit is very light. As of now, I'm glad I got this model. I highly recommend this unit for its simplicity of playing CDs. My only caution would be to insure all of the buttons operate correctly before making the purchase especially if you live some distance from the store. Of course, if you order it on-line ... well, good luck. I would have given this player a 5-star rating had the first unit worked correctly.

I did not realize when I leased my new vehicle that it did not have a cd player. I am studying Spanish through a CD disc program and need something to play them in my car. I also purchased a car charger so that I would not have to keep buying batteries. This worked for awhile with the car charger, and then would not play any longer without the batteries. I still use it, but I go through a ton of batteries each month. You cannot forward or reverse it to a certain part of the disc, but only to the next lesson or previous lesson. If you stop a a part of the lesson and come back and want to pick up where you left off, you can do it if the wait time is not too long; otherwise, it will go back to the beginning. For the price, it's OK, but I think it could be a little better.

    Audio Book Problem

    Posted
    JohnQ1969

I enjoy listening to audio books on my player. Every unit I've had in the past (not Insignia) allowed me to stop and when I restarted I was back at the point where I had stopped. The Insignia unit I received takes me back to the beginning of the CD so I have to fast forward to where I ended (assuming I recall where I was).Very annoying (especially if I haven't listened to this CD for a couple of days) I purchased this because the price was so attractive and did not expect such a problem. I stopped in another Best Buy store today and was told they had never heard of this problem with the Insignia unit in the past . i'm hoping it is just this unit and will attempted to exchange it for one without this problem. Otherwise I will return to a SONY unit

    NOT HALF-BAD

    Posted
    jayeldee

This seems like a nice unit. Simple and attractive, and so far plays everything I feed it (including burned CD's), with nary a "skip" (unlike the SONY unit it's replacing--which, although barely used, is wholly unreliable and prone to dropouts). The line out jack bypasses the volume control, and is useful for attaching to an external amp (as shown in my photo). The LCD readout is larger than many: about 1/2 inch tall, with stacked characters about 1/4 inch tall. The controls are simple, and logically arranged. The only problem I've found is that the AC power jack isn't fully compatible with my adapter--so that a slight twist of the cord, in the wrong direction, cuts the power. Despite that, all in all, not half-bad! I'm happy....... so far....

Pay more and get a better player

    Latimer

I bought this CD player when my MP3 player went bust and I wasn't ready for a new one. I figured that even a cheap player should last for a bit, right? Wrong. At first it worked pretty well, though it wouldn't play any of my burned CDs. But there are certain CDs it just can't play, even though they aren't particularly dirty or scratched; it just has no tolerance for any imperfections. It also never liked starting up in the cold, meaning I have to take it inside with me from my car whenever I go to work and have to warm it up before using it. All electronics do this, but I've never seen any device need it to this degree. Then as time went on it became very fussy about how it was held. Now, when it decides to work, it needs to be kept perfectly flat - even a few degrees off balance and it makes weird noises and stops working. That's in the off chance that it even gets past turning on and actually plays the CD. I do not recommend this product. Get a different brand, pay a little bit more, and get something that lasts.

My portable CD player I had for 23 years decided to die and I needed a replacement. There was one at a store not far from where I live but it did not have a Bass Boost. I went on the Best Buy website and saw this Insignia which appeared similar to what I had but I noticed it said it didn't have a Bass Boost. What I did was search the product number and found a PDF Manual of this product. It says there IS a Bass Boost. Upon going back to the Best Buy site I brought up the photos of this player. The second picture reveals the open lid sliding button and off to the left is the Bass Boost button. I rode the bus to the nearest Best Buy site and bought this off the shelf and was totally pleased when I started playing it. Can't figure out why any reputable company would make a portable CD player without a bass boost. Anyway, Best Buy should correct the product info on their site because it says "no" for Bass Boost when it does have it on the device. Great price and chalk up another great product made by Insignia that does not disappoint.

This does what I bought it for: to play CDs in my car. (Do NOT get me started on how new cars don't come with CD players anymore!) I had to buy an extra charger to plug it to my car, because batteries obviously don't last. Yes, it plays the CDs, and the controls are easy to feel without looking at them, which is nice for safe car driving. The skip control is great--it hasn't skipped once for me. However, the sound quality is DISMAL, with lots of static/background noise. I mostly bought it for recorded books, but if I were trying to listen to music, it would be really disappointing. Also the sound jack has to be positioned just so to transmit the sound to the car speakers. Bottom line: it gets the job done, but it ain't pretty.

This is a perfect Player for me to listen to all my various CD's. I can easily listen to my music any time and the quality of the sound is great for me. I hate music that is too loud so this machine is perfect. I can adjust the volume, but for some it might still be too low. The dials are easy to use and although you can't stop the machine and go back to where you were the next day, easily fixed by simply writing down the track you ended on. Battery lasts a decent amount of time and for the money it is well worth it. This machine is not sensitive to movement, and will not skip playing. This is made for Best Buy and I even purchased one for my husband after he tried mine.

I bought this for my dad who is in a memory care facility and has always LOVED music. He can still read to follow instructions and I wanted something simple to use and portable - use with headsets so he could listen whenever he wants. There are no words like "start" or "stop" or "press here" - you have to know what the symbols mean and he doesn't so I used bright red fingernail polish on the "stop" button and green for "play." Nice to see him in a recliner, headsets on (I could plug in his own from home that were familiar to him) and a smile on his face listening to music!

Husband bought a Ridgeline truck in November, without a CD player. He's got a collection of CD's he's acquired over the years which he loves to listen to in the truck. I looked into buying an iPod but transfering the music is a task. Bought the Insignia CD Player for Christmas. He loves it. Keeps it in the center console. Easily accessed and manipulated. No issues, good sound, no skipping except when it was extremely cold. The truck is parked outside and, with temps in the single digits and teens over several days, the player did skip until the console well warmed. Reaching into the well, the bottom of the cavity was pretty cold. We continued playing but left the cover open. In a few min the issue disappeared. He's happy. So far great little player for not much cost.

If these are being phased out, it's unfortunate. Insignia has been one of the more reliable manufacturers of budget portable CD players. Aside from a few mild inconveniences, this produces good sound through my over-ear Bose headphones. AS LONG AS THE ESP SKIP PROTECTION IS TURNED OFF! It must be disabled every time you play a CD as its default setting is on. Even though, ironically, the product booklet guide advises against having it on too often due to battery drainage. This is a very sensitive player that must be played without movement on a sturdy flat surface. Not recommended for joggers or for any kind of kinetic movement. Recommended for sedentary use.

I purchased this item to permanently reside in my 2016 Smart ForTwo. In their infinite "wisdom" the car's manufacturer left out a CD player since "obviously" only Bluetooth technology is used by all drivers now! (Gerrr!) And no, I couldn't put a new stereo in the car as the original system's configuration has the unit separated from the dash on a kind of "stalk". Looks cool but doesn't allow for switching out for another stereo. So, I bought this CD player, a cup holder bracket to hold it, an audio cable to connect the player to the media plug-in of my radio and a cigarette plug-in power adapter. It's a somewhat strange looking set up, but I can FINALLY listen to my CDs again. So far the player is working as anticipated and the price suited my pocket book.
