Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook 14" Review: A Sim

I’ve been using the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook for a little while now, and I have to say, for anyone who just needs something functional, straightforward, and affordable, this is a solid pick. It’s not going to win any awards for cutting-edge specs or premium design, but as a workhorse for everyday tasks—whether that’s browsing the web, writing, or watching Netflix—it really gets the job done. Design: Sleek & Simple Let’s start with the look and feel. The Abyss Blue color is a standout. It’s subtle but still has a bit of personality—definitely not your standard boring silver or black. The build itself feels sturdy, but not exactly “premium.” It's a plastic chassis, which makes sense given the price, but it doesn’t feel cheap either. It’s lightweight (around 3.3 pounds), which makes it easy to toss into a backpack or carry around if you’re on the go. The 14-inch display is a nice size—big enough to feel like you’re working on a proper laptop, but not so huge that it becomes cumbersome. The Full HD touchscreen is a pleasant surprise for this price range. It’s bright enough for indoor use, and while it’s not going to wow you with vivid colors, it gets the job done for everything from web browsing to watching YouTube or streaming a movie. Performance: Good for Everyday Use Now, the performance is where the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 shows its limits. Powered by an Intel Celeron N4020 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of eMMC storage, it’s not going to breeze through gaming or heavy multitasking. But if you’re using it for what it’s designed for—browsing the web, checking emails, working on Google Docs or spreadsheets, or streaming—then it really does a solid job. The 4GB RAM feels a little tight if you’re trying to juggle more than a couple of tabs at once, but honestly, for the price, it’s reasonable. 64GB of storage is also modest, but I’ve found that the Google cloud ecosystem more than makes up for it. Google Drive, Google Photos, and the ability to install Android apps from the Play Store all work together to create a seamless experience that doesn’t feel as limited as the specs would suggest. Battery Life: All-Day Power One of the most impressive things about this Chromebook is the battery life. I’ve easily gotten around 8-10 hours of use on a single charge—so if you’re using it for work, class, or just casual browsing, you won’t need to constantly worry about finding an outlet. It’s perfect for someone who needs a laptop that can get them through a full day without charging. Plus, when it does need a recharge, it charges quickly, so you won’t have to wait long. Portability: Great for Students or Travelers If you’re a student or someone who needs a laptop that’s easy to carry around, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is a great choice. It’s slim, light, and sturdy enough to toss into a backpack without thinking twice. The 14-inch screen strikes a nice balance—large enough to work on comfortably but small enough to not feel too bulky in your bag. Software: Chrome OS Simplicity One of the big selling points of a Chromebook is how fast and intuitive Chrome OS is. I’ve been a big fan of Chrome OS for years because it’s just so no-nonsense. Everything is cloud-based, which means it’s fast, secure, and simple to set up. And if you’re already in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Docs, etc.), it’s almost like everything just clicks into place. Plus, the ability to run Android apps from the Play Store is a big plus for some added functionality. That said, if you’re someone who needs specific software (like Adobe Creative Suite or other Windows/Mac apps), this might not be the right choice for you. But if you’re mostly working in Google’s ecosystem, you’ll find the Chromebook does everything you need and more. Connectivity: Basic but Effective The port selection is fairly standard, with 2 x USB Type-C, 1 x USB Type-A, a microSD card reader, and a headphone jack. It’s not a ton of ports, but it’s enough to get the job done for most people. Wireless connectivity is solid with Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2, and I didn’t have any issues with lag or connection drops. Final Thoughts: Perfect for Simple, Everyday Use If you’re looking for a cheap and reliable laptop for basic tasks, this Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook fits the bill perfectly. It’s not fancy, but it does exactly what it’s supposed to do—and does it well. The 14-inch Full HD touchscreen, long-lasting battery, and Chrome OS integration make it an ideal choice for students, professionals, or anyone who just needs a no-frills laptop for browsing the web, checking emails, or streaming content. While it may not be powerful enough for heavier tasks, if your needs are simple and straightforward, you’ll appreciate the value this Chromebook brings to the table. The Abyss Blue color is a nice touch too, giving it a little extra flair for the budget-conscious shopper. All in all, it’s a solid, reliable device that punches well above its weight. Pros: Lightweight, portable design—perfect for travel or students. Great battery life—easily lasts a full workday. Full HD touchscreen—clear and responsive for everyday tasks. Chrome OS—fast, secure, and easy to use. Affordable—a great option for anyone on a budget. Cons: Limited storage (64GB eMMC)—you’ll need to rely on cloud storage or an external drive. 4GB RAM might feel tight for heavy multitasking. Basic display and build quality—not a premium experience, but you get what you pay for. If you need a Chromebook that’s reliable, simple, and easy on the wallet, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is a great choice.

A Chromebook should run Google docs seamlessly. We have now gone thru two of these computers bc both show the same issue only occasionally with a random newly created doc. When opening a doc, the file looks corrupt, lines blacking out text, greyed out areas… the total tech guy said it would only get worse with time. The 2nd computer started doing it after only 3 days of use. Boo. I purchased a HP laptop instead.

It takes forever to boot and all messengers (WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram) are constantly freezing. Sometimes takes 5-7 minutes (!!!) to switch from and to a messenger which is absolutely ridiculous. The problem most likely is related to the touchscreen which is almost impossible to use because of a weird delay when moving a finger. Complete trash of a Chromebook, my 4-year old one is a budget model that worked way better before was destroyed by kids.

      Hi PeggyS,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook. We apologize for the frustration and inconvenience that this has caused you, and we'd like to work with you to resolve this issue.

To try to resolve this, first try doing a hardware reset (visit the following link to learn how to do so: https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/3227606?hl=en&sjid=11168473644130281663-NA), which reboots the embedded controller that manages various system components.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, you may need to factory reset your Chromebook, which you can learn more about towards the bottom of the webpage tied to the previously embedded link. So long as your Chromebook is backed up and the data is tied to the same Google account you used to setup your Chromebook, you can restore your system from a backup point to prevent you having to go through the full setup process again or having to make setting adjustments and customizations again.

Please update us when you can regarding this and reach out to us again should you have any questions or need further assistance, as your satisfaction is important to us.

      Best regards,
      Lenovo Lenovo

Long Battery Life and Great for Teaching and Work

I love that this Chromebook features an ARM-based Mediatek processor, which allows it to have a silent fanless design and a 10-13 hour battery life. It's ideal for a full day of remote teaching and office work because the laptop sips battery instead of chugging it. While it only comes with 4 GB of RAM and eMMC storage, ChromeOS' light footprint gives it a fast 10-second boot up time and it allows a reasonable amount of smooth multi-tasking. For example, I can easily have several Chrome tabs open, a Word document, and an active 20-student Zoom classroom (videos on) without things freezing up. The screen is a bright 300-nits which is good for media consumption and it being an IPS screen allows you to view the screen at different angles without distorting the colors. The laptop also comes with the ability to run Android and Linux apps, which is where its touchscreen feature becomes useful (especially since most Android apps are optimized for touchscreens and not mice). If you don't want to (or need to) use Android apps on the laptop, turning the feature off gives your device an extra performance boost. You can still access many mainstream web apps without Android. Zoom, Spotify, Slack, Microsoft Office, Discord, and Whatsapp all have web versions, a few which "install" as PWAs (web apps that have their own window to look like a desktop app). You always want to do your research before switching to ChromeOS to see if it will have all the apps you'll need or if there's a web version of that app. For me, it's a perfect work machine since it's lightweight, secure (to date, ChromeOS has never had a ransomware attack), has integration with Google and Microsoft services (the ability to add several Gmail accounts under one login, Google Docs, Microsoft 365 Office Web Apps, OneDrive), and is distraction free. As long as you know what to expect, it's a good device for dedicated purposes.
