You basically get both live and game pass for the same price when u upgrade for $1. Basically your $1 game pass upgrade with live combines both subscriptions into one. So if you have xbox live for 3 years u get game pass for 3 years by upgrading using the $1 promo

You're right, investing in this Xbox Live Gold membership BEFORE you upgrade to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate allows you to score extra months (up to a maximum of 36 months) on your Ultimate subscription at a discount. However, we have to emphasize that this deal is only available to new Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers and won't work after you've upgraded your account. If you redeem a Xbox Live Gold code after upgrading to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, it will automatically convert to Ultimate at a ratio based on the estimated retail price of the code. (Conversion rates are subject to change.)

The monthly free games are hit and miss, but the last 2 have been Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and MGSV, which are solid gold if you haven’t played them before. If you are patient, any game you have your eyes on will eventually go on sale, and IMO the 12 month plan pays for itself by the end of the term.
