Its a little annoying that Microsoft requires it for online play, but you do get a handful of free games each months that often are triple A games.

This is pretty straight forward add the card to your Microsoft account right after purchase and it instantly adds to your account

This gives you access to the Xbox Live Gold service for 12 months. This is the normal price. I try to find this at a discounted price, but when my subscription expired I needed the new 12 month card. It was easy to order online and pickup in the store. Best Buy gave me some reward points for the purchase.

XBOX Live offers a ton of content for users including "Games with Gold" where a couple of games each month are offered to subscribers for free!.
