This computer is super slow without the ssd. I returned it for one that was $400 lower priced. It blew this machine out of the water. I would recommend passing, and purchasing a computer with a solid state drive.

Needs internal Blu-ray player. Bought external player from LG but it failed rather quickly which was very disappointing. Learned to buy Laptop with internal drive that might be more durable.

I'll just make this to the point. great cpu with the 7700hq, 12gb ram is nice but with a quick cpuz info you can see (atleast on mines) the 4gb stick is a Samsung module at 2400mhz and the kingston 8gb stick at 2666mhz, but memory runs at the lowest stick so you are stuck at 2400 unless you get another 8gb 2666mhz. The gpu is the best thing about this laptop, the rx580 runs at 1266 core 2000mhz memory and if you know your stuff, that's equivalent to a desktop 480 which is not bad especially with the extra 8gb of ram this gpu is a very nice portable vr machine (which is what I mainly use it for). here is a 3dmark sky diver bench https://www.3dmark.com/sd/4943384 firestrike https://www.3dmark.com/fs/14527371 I can overclock it to 1290mhz core and it's stable, at 1300mhz it starts to throttle the gpu. the 17 inch display view is nice, doesn't reflect lighting in the house that much and for a gaming laptop it is big and has freesync built in which is awesome. viewing angle is not good but why would that matter, you're the only one looking at it. the hinge is strong, though because of the mounting in the middle it does flex ever so slightly if you lift the screen from the corner you animal (lift from the middle please). as for the weak point which is the storage.... or so say everybody. I don't believe the hdd is pathetic, it's a freaking hgst 7k1000, it's not terrible. you have an extra m.2 slot for a nvme card like a Samsung 960. people complain about same price laptop having an ssd or nvme, well those other laptops all have a 3gb 1060 card......speed is nice but on a gaming laptop, you NEED space. I'm already halfway filled on this 1tb hdd with vr games and steam, and origin games. here is my pcmark10 score https://www.3dmark.com/pcm10b/164934 all benches are at stock speed. the only downside I see is the non removable battery (WHY!!!!!!!!) and the usb3.1C port not being a thunderbolt port.....also, no finger print scanner... but that's minor. the speakers are alright, a bit tinny but it's a laptop speaker, the higher end model has a small subwoofer I believe, hmm. at max volume it doesn't rattle or breakup. it's a gaming laptop in addition to being my oculus and wmr (got it for free with laptop purchase) but I also edit videos on it and it is glorious to not wait for rendering time when your friends are calling for you to go down the mountain skiing, or when your team is up to play paintball, or when its your turn to run your car on track day. great laptop, many upsides vs downsides.

It could surely use a Bluray player. Tried to hook up external player but it failed after a few days. It was great when it was working though.
