Picture and audio quality is twice as good as a DVD player. Everything is great, except for the remote. I do like the smaller size, but they took it too far. The buttons controlling the play of disc: play, stop, fwd, rwd, are small and close together. Four buttons per row, it would have been so much easier to operate with three per row. These are the buttons used most often, and they are the most difficult to use. Would I buy again? Absolutely.

The Panasonic DP-UB154 is Panasonic’s budget option for 4k UltraHD playback. The unit is small, simple and to the point. Unencumbered by the expectations of a smart player, this blu-ray player focuses on the mantra: “do one thing and do it right”. With this I find no fault. First I’ll skip any pretense and make a recommendation. If you’re an AV enthusiast and non-techy, non-gamer, or have a dedicated movie space, this is the player for you. Literally put the disk in and play like DVD players of old. The primary competition for any UHD player right now are game consoles. But since the death of the Xbox One S, there are really no budget options in that space right now, especially with digital only being pushed. While I’ve used an Xbox One S in the UHD player role it’s not ideal. With the fact that even starting my old Xbox One S, updating it, launching a movie, etc… is an exhausting process (for a UHD player only), the UB154 is a breath of fresh air. The UB154 is a small unit, under 13” wide. The left side is the disc tray, which is a traditional ejection tray (supporting standard and mini discs). There are only 2 buttons on the device: power and eject. On the back you also find simplified ports with an MVP of DC power, HDMI, and 10/100 ethernet. This player does not have WiFi, so keep that in mind for your setup. In my case, I wired my home theater a long time ago, so it’s a non-issue. That said, you shouldn’t need to do firmware updates too regularly (although mine did initially after powering on). The included remote is pretty basic. It’s not backlit or really comfortable in the hand. Buttons are small, but it’s effective for when you need all the controls. Ideally CEC is what you’d use on a day to day basis, but I had trouble initially with it. CEC will let you use your TV or receiver remote to control the playback of the blu-ray. I won’t blame my troubles on this device, but my rather finicky Marantz receiver. Software wise, this device does seem to support the basic ‘photo’, ‘video’, ‘audio’, ‘disc’ options. None of these are network enabled (unless you consider the BD Live functionality), but instead rely on either the disc drive or USB to read media. I’m not sure, in a world of connected services, and streaming devices you’d ever need this functionality but it’s there. Besides that, basic playback and information support is found. The settings menu lets you dive into a few deep settings, but overall keeps things simple. Setup correctly identified my projector as 4k and not-3d (which this device appears to support 3D, but I was unable to test) and HDR 10+. Of note, there is no Dolby Vision support to be found. My projector doesn’t support that anyways, but it’s worth mentioning. Playback was handled fairly well. Playback start time rivals almost any player I’ve owned, being much faster than some older non-UHD blu-ray players. The simplicity buys speed and that’s a welcome in this always connected checking for updates world. Pausing a movie and coming back to it could cause stuttering. Obviously the disc drive spun down in what is likely a power saving move, but likely unnecessary for anything but an EPA rating. Everything was drama free and it decoded my Bumble Bee movie gloriously. HDR 10+ worked flawlessly after a bit of a blank and display (which is a handshake that goes through my receiver to my projector that takes its time switching). Dolby Atmos bitstreamed perfectly from the disk. Detail was crisp and clear in both the audio and video side - reflecting their raw digital nature. Plugging in the normal BD, this also worked flawlessly in FullHD with Atmos streaming. Upscaling of the video looked good, but it’s hard to analyze what technology is in use. Overall the picture was definitely crisp, but only 1080p. The upscaling definitely made it look better than the raw blu-ray. So either UHD or FHD BD’s look excellent for a movie room. For my use case this is a god-send. A low maintenance, simple, fast UHD BD player is light years better than waiting for my Xbox One S to update and launch (and now I can relocate it and use it for more gaming). Overall this is a surgical device that correctly and precisely plays blu-ray disks. For that use case, it excels.

I can't believe how small and fast Blu-Ray players have gotten.  It seems like I've been upgrading Blu-Ray players about every two years.  When they first came out they were quite big with all sorts of features.  Many included the original steaming products, offering included streaming functions before Streaming functions became common on HD TV and then 4K; although most 4K TVs had streaming functions by the time they came out.  Ten plus years later, we all have streaming boxes or TV's that stream on their own.  But when 4K ultra Blu-rays started to be released, HD10+ was not yet released, and Hi  Res (384kHz/32-bit PCM wasnot common).  But the feature I was most looking forward to was DVD to 4K upconversion.  I have a lot of early TV shows from the 60's/70's that are only available on DVD's; I'm anxious to see how this Blu-Ray player does on these.  I have 3 current Blu-Ray players, one was supposed to upconvert from DVD to Blu-Ray quality, It was a nominal  improvement. To get started the front of the Panasonic DP-UB154P-K is about as plain as it could get, gone are the big LEDs telling you what it's doing.  I'm going to hide this in a big Audio Cabinet, where it won't be seen, so the fancy display won't be missed.  The on/off eject buttons are on the top right, they are small and black, hard to find; they had some LED backlighting to better find them.  There is a single red LED that tells you the unit is on.  Setup was an absolute breeze.   I connected to my Ethernet network, checked for updates and I was ready to go.  Note: this unit this not support/offer a WiFi connection.  So without a Ethernet connection, advanced Blu-Ray features won't be accessible.  The back of the unit has a power connection, HDMI connection and an Ethernet connection.  That's it.  No optical/digital output, only HDMI.  The unit supports 3D output if you have a DVD/Blu-Ray that supports that.  No Glasses are provided.  The unit supports absolutely every Audio/Video format that exists, including FLAC, via CD/DVD or USB connection.  It also supports DLNA connections, it found my NAS Server and 2 media servers with  me only needing to provide user/password information where required.  And it supports most Dolby Surround formats (except Atmos). In operation I started watching Wonder Woman 4K Ultra, I've watched it several times before but never on a player that supported HDR10+, HDR10.  I have to say the difference is quite impressive, the things in the shadows are much more apparent, and motion is more clear.  WW has a lot of very dark scenes, and visually they pop a lot better on this BluRay player than on my others.  I then tried playing Lost in Space, the 3rd season (in Color!). And the quality on  my 4K Sony TV was surprisingly good. I could see some color blending issues, but compared to the original which was heavily pixelated, the 4K image was remarkably good, and it surprisingly fit the screen very well (no black bars).  Very good.  Then on to Colombo, where I got black bars but again a much better image than I had before.  Here the player really shines. It's great at upconverting. The biggest con I had was lack of digital/optical outputs.  My surround setup feeds multiple independent Stereo systems, one 7.2 the other 5.1 (outside).  Without optical/digital outputs I could not get both to work. With HDMI I could get one or the other but not feed the audio signal to both. I tried a HDMI splitter, but it did not do what I needed.  I also with this blu-ray supported WiFi natively so that updates could be done without hooking it up to an Ethernet network.  For where I plan to use this player it's not a big deal, but for a different location it would be. It is quite a nice BluRay player, especially for state of the art 4K discs and older DVDs.

This is my first 4k player, so I can't judge it against others, BUT I can state that it works flawless, is easy to setup (basically talked to the TV and set itself into a 4k/60 mode) and boots discs quickly. The remote is tiny and cheap, and the unit itself feel pretty low-end in your hand (power and eject buttons on top of unit are cheap feeling) and the try is thin, flimsy plastic ... BUT it should be fine so long as you keep the player level and in a place where you won't put other AV gear on top of it. Image and sound quality output by the unit is GREAT ... all the 4k discs I have both look and sound noticeably better than the same material in 4k on streaming services ... so long as you don't mind the cheap buttons and remote, and don't need a 4k player with built in apps or dolby vision (this is a HDR10+ only device... which is fine by me since im on a Samsung OLED, which is also HDR10+ only), then this player is a VAST improvement over standard HD blurays and also a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade over 4k streaming material ... if you have a 4k tv and havent seen 4k UHD discs, then this device is a great entry level device for your home cinema setup. recommended.

Panasonic 4k UHD Blu-ray player DP-UB154P-K In today’s modern world of streaming media services galore, some might argue why companies are still supporting plastic disc based media. I’ve had this complaint levied against me I’m fact, as old school CD, DVD, Blu-ray collector. My reasons are simple; while PQ picture quality might be comparable, the audio seldom is, with various services thinning down Dolby and DTS audio bandwidth on streaming services, compared to disc based media holding far more capacity at far higher depth bitrate sampling rates. In fact some services don’t even offer the Dolby Atmos track that we can get on 4k UHD Blu-ray Disc. Another reason for owning discs is you own your personal copy of the movie, to watch anytime, not sit behind a paywall hoping the streamer doesn’t pull it before you intend to watch again, or their license rights expire. I was surprised to find this Panasonic 4k UHD player after a seemingly long absence in the category. Previously I was concerned when Sony discontinued their previous high end 4k player (UBP-X800?) to retool it stripping some features I was compelled to purchase a backup. I can say this Panasonic is a fraction of the original price of the Sony players and outperforms it. If you maintain a disc based library and are looking to upgrade Blu-ray to 4k UHD you could spend much more, though imho you don’t really need to. Pros + compact + occupies little rack space + impeccable picture quality + high resolution audio support + picture quality calibration controls l Cons -no display screen -plastic construction feels sub par -power transformer instead of IEC cable Conclusion: The product could be better (front display screen, etc) but for the price of this you’re getting a high quality 4k image that even makes traditional non-4k images look outstanding.

Ok, to start off, this blu-ray player doesn't have much physical presence in comparison to it's sleek, shiny, multi-function peers. It's a black box, two physical buttons on top (open / close and power), blu-ray tray, USB port, and power indicator on front. In back is the power cable, LAN port, and single HDMI port. It comes with a power cord, remote, and batteries. Overall a compact black box with the bare basics. A few important things to note, this player doesn't have wifi enabled, so no streaming or built in assistant, and if you need to update firmware, you'll have to dig out your ethernet cable and tether it to a modem. The upside is that setup is plug and play. The home screen gives the user four options - video, music, photo, and setup. For each type of media the options are to play from disc or USB. Overall a simple format that is easy to navigate. If you don't mind trading off the bells and whistles for a phenomenal 4K output, this blu-ray player may be for you. This player boasts HDR optimization and supports multiple HDR formats from HDR10, UHD, and HLG, up to HDR10+. I have tested it with my 4K projector as well as my 65" 4K 3D TV, both producing high quality images that capture breathtaking color vibrancy (tested with Planet Earth II 4K UHD) with high quality depth and texture. A few other features to note are high-res quality sound and 3D playback capabilities that supports depth control. I found disc playback and processing was a bit noisier than I prefer, but not to the point of being a detractor. Overall, I was underwhelmed with the interface, I miss having wifi, but I was highly impressed with the quality of image from TV, DVDs, Blu-Ray, 3D, and 4K Ultra HD.

The setup was easy for both the physical and electronic connection to the TV. I'm not very "techy" so appreciated how quickly everything went. The screen interface is easy to understand and use. The drawer for the disk seems a bit flimsy but it works fine. As other reviewers mentioned, the buttons on the remote are indeed small. I'm still getting used to it. I'm mostly interested in using this for my collection of CDs but have watched one DVD and the quality was good. (I use a soundbar for quality sound.) The overall unit is pretty compact, which I like as I have limited space in my condo.

This Panasonic Blu-Ray DVD Player is very basic - comes with the unit, power cord, and the remote control (includes batteries). It has one HDMI port to connect to the TV, one LAN port to connect to the internet, and one USB port to do updates if it's not connected to the internet. The setup up is basically plugging it into the electrical outlet, connecting the TV to the HDMI port, and making sure the proper input is selected. I did not realize that this particular device was LAN only - can not be connected via Wi-Fi. This means that if connecting a LAN cable is not an option, updates have to be done through a USB flash drive, which is simple enough, but not convenient. It also means that some features on some Blu-Ray movies may not play. The movie will still play however, without connection to the internet. The overwhelming feature about this player is the 4K picture quality that comes through. The image quality is breathtaking. I would definitely recommend this Blu-Ray DVD player. I deducted one star only because I think the box and manual should indicate the it is NOT Wi-Fi enabled, or allow Wi-Fi for performing updates only. Overall, it does the job it was designed for and is nice to see some simple, functional technology.

Player is excellent. Video and audio quality are too notch. The remote is not intuitive or user friendly whatsoever. Happy wirh purchase. If I used the remote more then a couple of times a month, it would be more frustrating.

The Panasonic DP-UB154P-K 4K Ultra HD DVD/CD/3D Blu-Ray Player is a small sleek minimalist device that packs a lot of power for such a small entertainment system. It is very user friendly and light weight at 2.6 lbs. it’s Dimensions (W x H x D) are: 12.6" x 1.8" x 7.6". To begin, inside the shipping box comes the remote control with 2 AAA batteries, the blu-ray player and the ac adapter to plug into the wall. The blu-Ray player is region 1. It has one HDMI output. Located on the back of the unit. It has one USB port located at the front of the unit. It also has an Ethernet connection at the back. It can play WAV, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW discs. It is Surround Sound Supported: DTS-HD, Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD with high resolution audio. It was very easy to install the player and the movie had no issues when playing. The picture was very crisp and clear with amazing color. There was no skipping or lag. I was very happy with the player and the way it functions. It was very easy to operate and install.

I wanted to test how this DVD player not only worked on a 4K TV but on just a regular Insignia as well. 4K to 4K usually works great but the biggest challenge is to make any TV have a great viewing experience. This player delivered. First, you should update the Firmware. You can do this with a direct internet connection or via USB (port on front). It does have a reset feature if you ever dispose of or give away the unit. Connection is very easy via an HDMI cable supporting at least 18 Gbps (not included). You can also connect to a network via a LAN cable (not included). The only issue in setting up was that it wouldn’t allow me to back out of the voice guidance setup screen. I turned the unit off / on a few times and then it did. You can play from many formats here DVD/ULTRA HD/HDR10/HDR10+/UHD/HLG/WAV/FLAC/MP3/AAC/WMA/AIFF/ DSD/ALAC. My testing was done with Ultra HD and just standard DVD (both purchased DVDs and ones that I recorded). Plus, I played an MP3. On the 4K TV we also are connected to a high-quality sound bar. The sound was excellent with this combination, both with Ultra HD and an MP3. Picture quality was excellent with the 4K TV but what really surprised me was the quality of a 70’s TV show DVD on the Insignia TV. The DVD is normally a little fuzzy as the show (The Quest, 1976) was never re-mastered. But even with a poor DVD and a standard TV, the quality was apparent. The fuzziness was gone and the picture crisp. Vibrant color and clarity. It was truly amazing. Then I tried a few more poorer quality DVDs and the same result. This unit is highly recommended whether you have a 4K TV or just a newer standard TV.

This works very well with easy setup menu. There has not been an issue with it. Solid buy for an affordable price.

So I recently received the Panasonic DP-UB154P 4K Blu-ray player and have been testing it for about a week now. I Yes, as a standard 4K Blu-ray player, it works just…fine. Nice shadow detail and speculation highlights but it truly lacks key features that are important to most home theater enthusiast. One of the biggest drawbacks of this player is its lack of Wi-Fi connectivity. This is crucial!!! Even though this unit doesn’t include apps or an app store, it MUST be connected to the internet in order to receive dynamic metadata information. So while I am ok with the player lacking Dolby Vision support, the need to run a 100ft Ethernet cable just to get HDR10+ has a huge hassle. In 2023, we have come so far along in the production on Blu-ray players that it can almost be categorized as a “manufacturing error” to not include Wi-Fi connection. Another issue I had with the DP-UB154P was the cheap build quality. Not that it feel like it's going to fall apart in your hands, but the matte plastic front and “tin-ish” frame just lacks a premium feel that is common with a $200+ UHD Blu-ray player. This could be a deal-breaker for some who value the look and feel of their home theater setup. It also uses a removable AC adapter that looks more is line with an $20 hand vacuum. A farcry from the typical polarized/ non-polarized cables found with more powerful players. I’ve decided to place it in my mancave, away from my more premium products as it is a fine companion for my the non-premium TV. With all my cons out of the way, there are some positives to the DP-UB154P. The player does a great job of upscaling standard Blu-ray discs to near 4K quality, which is impressive. It's also the more affordable choice for anyone looking a dedicated player when compared to Panasonic’s DP-UB9000 which retails at $1100. But make no mistake, although this is a cheaper option, this unit still has loads of player settings for all my “Menu tweakers” out there. From soundtrack options, color gamut & frame-rate options, USB options and background wallpaper selections. It can also playback 3D Blu-rays for those who still own the hard to find panel. In closing, the Panasonic DP-UB154P 4K Blu-ray player is serviceably purpose built, but it fails longtime home theater hobbies in some key areas that are important. The lack of Wi-Fi connectivity and dainty build quality are both major drawbacks, and the HDR10+ feature is essentially useless without an Ethernet connection. If these factors are important to you, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a 4K Blu-ray player that better meets your needs. 2.5/5

The Panasonic DP-UB154P-K is a decent 4K Blu-ray player, but for me it skips out on too many features to make it worth buying. At this point in my mind, anybody buying 4K Blu-ray discs is getting them in order to experience the best quality the movie has to offer and no support for Dolby Vision is a letdown for me. The lack of Wi-Fi is disappointing as well, though historically the apps built into Blu-ray players have been subpar so I can somewhat forgive that. Another strange omission is there is no HDMI cable in the box, so you'll need to order one or make sure you have one that's compatible. As a Blu-ray player it's dead simple to use and I appreciate that about it. There's a single HDMI output for video and an Ethernet port for wired internet to update the player firmware and access BD Live features. The remote is compact and all the buttons are laid out intuitively, but there's no volume controls on it, so you'll need to utilize a second remote for that (or if you have one you can program for the player). Image quality and playback is smooth and despite the lack of Dolby Vision support HDR10+ still looks just as good if the movie supports it. Overall it's not a bad 4K Blu-ray player, but it feels like an incomplete package and there are options from Sony that have Dolby Vision and Wi-Fi support that don't cost that much more.

Bought this to go with new Samsung TV and replace an older model. It was easy to setup and use. Provides compact size design, upscales older DVDs, upscales BluRay to 4K and plays any CDs without issue.

Set up was easy, playback is excellent and matches well with my Samsun tv. Both audio and video quality are surprisingly good for the price . Over all it’s an excellent product that deserves a look and consideration. The only negative that I have is the remote layout, it’s small and compact. For someone with nimble fingers it may b fine but for those older people it will be a bit more challenging to see and use

This device was easy to set up. The quality and viewing is very acceptable for watching movies on bluray.
