Typing a review never felt so good. I’m currently typing this review on the very device it’s written for. The ROCCAT Pyro Mechancial Keyboard feels like an evolution for ROCCAT. Having used the Vulcan keyboard released in the previous year, this keyboard feels different. Let’s start with what’s in the packaging. In the box you’ll find the keyboard with an attached USB cable, a palm rest, the owner’s manual and warranty guide. Keep in mind, that to take advantage of the lighting features you’ll need to install the free ROCCAT SWARM software from their website. The app will also prompt to install an update to be able to configure the keyboard and any other ROCCAT device you might be configuring. The keyboard benefits from a mostly metal top casing, giving the keyboard a nice weight and rigidity. This also lends to the lighting effect, giving the keyboard a nice glowing reflection off the top case of the keyboard. Overall, this feels like a very premium device on your desk. Installation was easy, take the palm rest and push in to attach. Removal of the palm rest is as easy as lifting the keyboard and pushing the palm rest downward. The small plastic tension clips do a good job of easily attaching and you shouldn’t fear breaking it when detaching. It’s made of a molded plastic, but you’ll likely find the palm rest comfortable to use while doing a good job keeping your wrists rested while typing. I appreciate that more and more OEMs are including palm rests, but if you have a favorite one you’re already using, you can stick with it. The keys type very naturally, only requiring minimal force to type, and the click is a bit more subtle. It’s not as loud as previous clicky style keyboards, but not entirely quiet either. It’s like a muffled click, almost sounding like hollow plastic hitting a base. I can’t perfectly explain it, but it’s still a satisfying typing experience overall. The keys have a nice grippy, almost satin like feel, while maintaining a good grip on your fingers while using. For those wondering, you can absolutely remove each key and likely replace them with your own, adding to the customization options of this keyboard. Using the ROCCAT software you’ll find some additional options and features that aren’t included with the device natively. Such as the ability to turn on AIMO lighting, which simply reacts to the task you’re performing. This is my favorite lighting setting, as it adjusts the keys after each press, showing a nice vibrant pop of color on each key press. This does a good job of adjusting across other ROCCAT devices as well, illuminating each device with a similar color scheme as it adjusts to your gameplay. The app also allows you to customize EVERY single keys color, add macro options for pretty much every key if you want some more control in game, and allows for the use of other lighting templates. There is also a feature to enable typing sounds, which will belt out a typing sound of choice over your speakers or headphones while you type. Want to live the fantasy of an old fashioned typewriter, simply toggle the typewriter sound. You can even increase or decrease the volume in the app to help mitigate any loud office interruptions. I also appreciate the ability to adjust the “repeat delay” of key presses. Ever played a game that requires you mash a button to complete a task and need to speed up or slow down the repeat delay, easy! Just go into the app and use the slider to adjust the repeat delay, on the fly. The ROCCAT app also allows you to customize key assignment functions, using either a keyboard view or a list view. This allows for a vast selection of keys to perform basic functions in the OS like opening a folder on demand, or customizing the Easy Shift+ feature for your devices. You can also set up to 5 device profiles in the app, to allow for on-demand switching of key assignments, lighting, or any number of features you’ve enabled within the app. I also appreciate the volume dial on the keyboard, allowing for simply volume changes as you’re in game or in an application. The standard multimedia keys (pause/play/etc) are located under the F9-F12 keys instead of being separate keys. Next to the volume dial, you’ll find the number key, capslock, and game mode indicators. Game mode, when toggled using the FN+Scroll key, does a good job of silencing most alerts from your desktop. It doesn’t automatically disable when leaving a game, so just make sure to toggle it back off when you’re done. The included rubber feet on the bottom of the keyboard and matching palm rest, helping to keep the keyboard in place as your in a game or typing with vigor. Overall, given the price, the added functionality and flexibility of key assignments, macros using EasyShift+, and the illumination customization it’s hard to pass this keyboard up. If you’re wanting a great mechanical keyboard for your home or office, this is a great pairing for your PC. Just make sure to install the ROCCAT Swarm app and you’re ready to take on any task or jump into any game. If you’re lucky enough to pair this with other ROCCAT devices that feature AIMO, you should expect a unified experience across those devices as they all sync lighting during use. For those of you missing the “clicky” sound from your previous mechanical keyboard, you should definitely give this a try.

Oh my goodness... I don't even know where to start! When I got this keyboard on Black Friday it was 50% off so it was a steal for me! Afterwards, I picked it up a few days later and it was the best thing ever! The keyboard comes with a palm rest which was the best and it comes with amazing RGB lights and cool colors. The swarm app that you can download has many things you can do to customize your keyboard! I had lots of fun with that. The palm rest that comes with it is amazing! It is very comfortable and sticks right into place without an issue! The keys are at the perfect rate of pressing down and up! Now my conclusion? I think this is a very good keyboard for mid level gaming and even if you got yourself a new P.C, laptop, or whatever gaming device! This was my very first keyboard and it satisfies every one of my needs for gaming. I recommend getting this on a sale day because it can go off 50% and that is really good. As I play more games in the future with this keyboard it is exactly what I need. 5 stars NO COMPLAINTS! (This is also good for beginning level gaming too!) :)

I am extremely satisfied with this keyboard! It is now my primary keyboard in my gaming and productivity setup. The linear switches are perfect. This is my fourth keyboard with linear (red) switches and it performs just like any of them with accurate, firm keystrokes without being overly clicky like the blue variety; just the way I like my keyboards. This full-sized keyboard is my preference too. I use Microsoft Excel quite a lot for data entry and the ten key number pad on keyboards is crucial to my workflow. Roccat has TKL offerings if you prefer not to have a number pad on your keyboard. At this price point, the individual key RGB that fully illuminates each key, dedicated volume knob, detachable wrist pad, and brushed aluminum top plate all push this over the top in value for your dollar. I honestly have no criticisms to offer about this keyboard at all except that the Roccat Swarm software for controlling the lighting etc. continues to need polishing up. They are releasing updates for it all the time though, so I know that it is a work in progress. This is my third Roccat gaming accessory alongside my Roccat Kone mouse and my Roccat headset, they continue to blow me away with their quality! Thanks for reading and I hope this helps boost your confidence in your purchase!

Great keyboard feels sturdy and well built. The switches are mechanical and linear (like a cherry mx red), they seem to be Roccat’s own switches though. They key caps have clear legends and RGB lighting shines thru them exactly right, without being obnoxious. Only downside is they are ABS plastic, which over time, the legends may fade away and will look greasy. You can replace them though with cheap sets online of double shot PBT keycaps, the layout seems very standard. It also has a volume knob. Its very sturdy as it has a nice brushed aluminum top plate, loving this. You can install Roccat’s swarm software and further configure the RGB lighting and other things. The only downside is that the cable is not removable (would have loved a removable USB type c one) and it feels just cheap plastic (non-braided cable). It does come with a wrist rest, which is a nice extra, however its non-cushioned and its hard plastic. I guess it’s better than nothing. If you’re looking for a non-expensive mechanical keyboard, I would highly recommend it.

I am a member of Best Buy’s Technical Insider Network, TIN for short. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. Setup: Setting up the Roccat Pyro hardware is super simple. It is ready go right out of the box. Unbox, unwrap, plug in the USB cable into any running computer, and you will have a fully functional rainbow fest at your fingertips. The Roccat Pyro arrived while I was in the middle of my workday. I gotta pay the bills before ripping out the games. So, first experience with the Pyro was a day’s worth of typing on my work computer. The keyboard was recognized instantly as a keyboard and lit up under the rainbow bright default lighting profile. Done! Nothing to it! Keyboard: I really enjoy typing on this keyboard. The keys have good weight. The keys are not crowded. The surface area of the keycaps are about the surface area of a chicklet key on a laptop. The concave shape of each key fits my fingers well and prevents my fingers from slipping between keys. I played multiple games including Mechwarrior Online, Mechwarrior 5, Titan Fall 2, and Apex Legends. Titan Fall 2 and Apex Legends really put this keyboard through the paces. I spent most of my games pressing and holding W while also strafing from side to side, jumping, interacting with objects, and switching between weapons. I did not experience any ghosting. Everything, for me, felt quick and 100 percent responsive. This keyboard does everything I asked it to. And it performed without any issues or complaints. I like the large volume knob. Windows and my headset have volume controls. But, prefer external, physical volume controls on my keyboard. The knob rotation is stiff and tactile. This is good because it will prevent you from blowing out your ear drums or fully muting your reflexively fine tune your volume. Additionally, the external volume control works on any computer without any setup on your part. This was equally true on my gaming laptop as well as my work laptop. The per key lighting is bright and vibrant. I like the color bleed around the keys and. The number row also casts light onto the F-Keys for a cool reflective lighting affect. It is very Christmasy with the right color combinations. The Swarm software will allow you to adjust per key lighting. This includes per key light intensity. I created a lighting profile for each game. It took me a few minutes to figure out how the profile creation system worked. There are zero instructions. But, once I figured it out, I found the experience to be simple and straight forward. I can set the Swarm software to auto detect my game and auto switch to the correct lighting profile. I could not get this to work for me. So, I had to manually switch between my lighting profiles. Once set, the Pyro did not have any issues with the color profile. The keyboard has good weight. The elevation feet only have one height adjustment of a few millimeters. The bottom of the keyboard and elevation feet have rubber like traction pads. On a hard surface, like a wooden table, this keyboard is not slipping unless you shove it. The keyboard’s surround and bottom are all plastic. The keys rest on an aluminum top plate. There is a wrist wrest that ships with the keyboard. It is a handsome addition but, in my opinion, is not comfortable. It is made from the same hard plastic as the keyboard. I would have preferred some level of padding instead of the grate format Roccat went with. Mystery Features: This keyboard has two mystery features that I simply do not understand. First is Easy-Shift+. According to Roccat’s website, depressing the Easy-Shift+ key will unlock a host of features around my WASD keys. It is such an impressive feature that it is listed on the back of the Pyro’s box. The key can even be re-assigned in through Swarm. But what does it do? I have no idea. There are no printed or online instructions available for the Pyro. Game Mode. What is Game Mode? Another mystery feature. This is a secondary function of the scroll lock key. A light next to Caps Lock and Num lock lights up when I press FN+Scroll. Otherwise, I have no idea what specialness this brings to my gaming experience. Software Setup and Configuration: The Roccat Swarm software is the connective tissue of the Roccat gaming eco system. Like Corsair, Logitech, Razor, and others, this is where you can configure your lighting profiles, connect them to games, connect the lighting effects to all other Roccat gaming hardware, and take advantage of features unique to the Roccat ecosystem. For example, you can set one of eight sound profiles for the keyboard’s key presses. No kidding. If you have ever had a fantasy that included a sci-fi laser sound coming out of your computer speakers every time you pressed a key on your keyboard, then Roccat’s got you covered. The Swarm software allows you to set per key lighting, per key brightness, and the ability to assign half a dozen or so lighting effects. You can have up to five active keyboard profiles and, as far as I can tell, up to five saved keyboard lighting profiles. These profiles can also be assigned to specific games or applications by targeting the .exe for each game or application. The software package has a lot of powerful features. You can create macros, re-assign Roccat default key bindings, and tie in AIMO. Roccat makes setting up simple lighting profiles simple and straight forward. You can choose from several prebuilt lighting effects or create your own customer effects. The custom effects can be setup per key, per common key groupings such as “All” and “WASD”, or per key. If you are doing a custom profile, then you will probably use all three in combination to create some truly unique profiles. Color profiles are not created in layers like some other ecosystems out there. Swarm’s keyboard layout interface is as simple as it gets. Simple does not necessarily equate to great user experience. First, there are no instructions. There are some FAQs and some Q&A that can be referenced. But little to no helper text on any function in the software. Some functions such, as AIMO and Alienware integration, have links to external sites with “more information.” Every link leads to a 404 site not found error. AIMO is Roccat marketing speak for Intelligent Lighting System. The Pyro has a global setting to turn on/off AIMO features. Like everything Roccat, there are no details telling me what AIMO really is, what benefit I receive by using it, or instructions on how to use it once I turn it on. The “more information…” link on the page is an instant 404 error in my web browser. According to Roccat’s website, “AIMO compatible gaming peripherals take advantage of our lighting engine, adapting to your play the more you use them and evolving over time.” And this means what exactly? I turned it on and did not see signs the Pyro was “adapting” as I played anything regardless how long I played. The Alienware integration is not compatible with the Pyro. The only reason I know this is because I opened Pyro when the keyboard was not plugged into my computer. There is an Alienware screen when the keyboard is not attached and there is an on/off screen when the keyboard is attached. The full Alienware screen indicates compatible devices. Why the compatibility list is not available when the Pyro is installed is anyone’s best guess. I would have liked to a chance to test this feature since I tested the Pyro on my Alienware gaming laptop. Finally, text needs to be bigger. Grey text on a black background in the smallest font you can use is not very useful. Overall, I did not have a positive experience with the Swarm software. There are some cool and unique ideas in here that will enhance your enjoyment of your Pyro keyboard. The current iteration of Swarm really killed my experience with the Pyro keyboard. I recognize that Roccat is shooting for a unique ecosystem experience that you can only find with Roccat. There is some great potential here. But Roccat needs to take a serious look at their user experience before they will achieve their goal of offering a compelling software experience that compliments their products. Let alone differentiate themselves from their competitors. Final thoughts: I like the keyboard. It checks all the right boxes. The clickity clack of the keys are not over-powering or annoying. I like the feel of the keys. I like the weight and travel of the keys. 2mm depress and 4mm travel seem to be the current industry standard. The only keys with significantly shorter travel are the Cherry MS keys found on the R4 series Alienware gaming laptops. The colors are bright. The keyboard does not slip when typing or gaming. And all the keys are responsive no matter how many or how fast I mash down on them. I love the LED intensity and vibrancy. In my opinion, less Swarm, this is a solid keyboard and a joy to use. Swarm killed the experience for me. Readable menus, helper text, manuals, working links to helpful information are all areas for improvement that would improve my experience with Pyro. I cannot recommend this keyboard until Roccat improves their software experience.

The installation of this keyboard was super easy--it almost seemed too easy at first. Of course, I didn't realize until I searched a bit that it's super helpful to install their software to make the keyboard fully customizable. At first use even without the software installed the keyboard looks and feel great! There is a detachable wrist-rest that snaps onto the frame. I love these and really wish every manufacturer would include them. It's so much better for your wrists and even arms to have them properly supported while using a computer. The light set up is really cool--and once you install the software you can customize the lights to your liking, or even let it 'sense' what you're doing and give you a nifty auto-customized set up! The software was also super helpful in letting me map out keyboard settings that I prefer and was used to, but aren't already on the layout. Something that wasn't a negative for me but that other people may not care for--being a mechanical keyboard I was a bit surprised at the sound and feel of the keys. With others I've used the keys felt more substantial---but were also quite a bit louder during use. This keyboard is a bit of a trade-off in that it's not as loud while using (but still louder than a standard keyboard) but the keys don't feel as firm as standard mechanical keyboard. The software works well enough and has enough cool customization that I'm looking into their other gaming products! For a mid-price mechanical keyboard this one has enough bells and whistles that you'd never know it was cheaper than others...except maybe in your keyboard preferences--if you like a very substantial 'clacky' keyboard you may want to look elsewhere.

Another Great Gaming Keyboard by Roccat

Roccat is introducing a couple of new mechanical gaming keyboards and I was lucky enough to be able to test one. The Roccat Pyro is a great gaming keyboard. As with other Roccat peripherals you use Roccat Swarm to customize your device for lighting, keystroke sounds, and custom gaming profiles. With Swarm you can also enable macros and create individual key assignments. The Pyro also comes with Roccat’ s Easy Shift [+] button, this basically gives you two functions on the same key. You could program a key to crawl, then when you push the Easy Shift button you could use the same key to make them run. This is my third Roccat mechanical keyboard, my 1st one was the Vulcan Pro TKL which I found out that I really use the Ten key more than I thought, the 2nd one the Vulcan Pro, my wife stole, loves it and uses it every day, and now this one the Pyro. They are all made sturdy, durable and solid. We are pretty rough on devices and the Roccats really hang tough. The Pyro has a brushed aluminum top plate and TTC linear red switches, these switches are great for gaming, they respond faster and require less force to hold them down, (45g Operating Force, 2.0mm actuation point and 4.0mm total travel) they also have a 50 million key stroke lifetime. The Pyro also comes with a detachable palm rest, easy to attach and remove, depending on what situation you are in. With all of the great Roccat gaming keyboards The Pyro comes with AIMO Lighting engine. If you are not familiar with this AIMO lighting learns from how you play and adapt to your play stile the more, you use them. When you decide to get a new keyboard, do not let the low price of the Pyro fool you, it has as many features as other high end keyboards.
