The SanDisk portable drive has 1TB of capacity, since it is an SSD it is a significant upgrade from your typical spinning disk portable drive and it noticeably faster by the nature of it being solid state storage. It is fairly compact coming in at 2.95 inches tall by 1.77 inches high and .39 inches thick, so it is very portable and about a quarter of the size of an iPhone 17. It uses USB 3.2 Gen 1 (10 Gbps) which is advertised to yield 600 MBps read times, write times are somewhat slower but still acceptable for quick file storage purposes. This is not designed to the specs of the much-maligned SanDisk Professional SSD drives, so direct file editing (for instance video) is probably not a good use case. However, for quick storage of files this portable SSD is more than capable. The attractive textured on one side case looks good, although it is not suited for rough use, nor does it have a Ingress Protection rating for dust, heat or water resistance. SanDisk does mention that it has drop protection up to 2 meters or around 6 feet. I would treat this drive with some care even though it appears durable, it is certainly not rugged. With the increase in memory and storage costs this may be suitable for casual users and may be a good entry point into portable SSD storage. Also I have not tested the feasibility of use when directly connected to a smartphone (such as an iPhone 15 or greater) that is capable of recording video directly to an SSD via a USB-C connection. I would look towards SSD storage and specifically one that is MagSafe compatible, so it remains physically attached to your phone rather than dangling via a cable. Ironically this SSD performed better than the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD - 1TB which I specifically purchased as directly attached storage while taking 4k ProRes video from my iPhone (I have to check why that SSD did not perform up to specs). Overall, this is a good value portable SSD drive from a reputable manufacturer, at a time when storage and memory prices are through the roof due to AI data center buildouts, this is a good compromise at a reasonable price in the current market. It basically delivers on the 600MBs advertised transfer rate and only is slightly less speedy than the SanDisk Professional SSD on read operations (the Pro model of course does better on write operations). >>> PROS >> SSD data transfer rates of almost 600MBs >> small size >> USB 3.2 Gen 2 <<< CONS << not top SSD performer, different class << less durable outer case and no waterproof or dustproor (Ingress Protection) IP rating.

I have a handful of External SSDs. They're handy to have around if you just want to transfer stuff fast from one computer to another. However, since memory has skyrocketed in price, I haven't picked up any in the past year or more. I was quite surprised that this Sandisk 1TB popped up with a very decent price. The box comes with the portable drive, and a 6 inch USB-C to USB-C cable. You also get the quick install and warranty guide. The drive case is plastic all around, it has a small lanyard hole and a nice texture on top. The Sandisk brand letter stands just slightly proud of the texture on top. The drive measures about 75mm x 45mm x 10mm. It is very compact and light. I connected it to my desktop machine first and immediately got 300 MB/s transfer speeds. I connected my Crucial x9 Pro and it got the same speeds. So the next test was my most recent laptop, it bumped up to 400 MB/s transfer speeds and the Crucial got the same speed. So I pulled out Crystal Disk Mark. The Sandisk is advertised with 600 MB/s read and it performed at 645 MB/s which is great. The write speed came in just a hair lower at 641 MB/s. Overall, I'm impressed. It doesn't match the Crucial speed when it comes to Benchmark tests, however in real world practical speeds, it's still plenty fast and most systems can't keep up. In practical tests, the Sandisk Portable Drive performs way beyond what I've found with USB Sticks. I've taken my Sandisk Portal Drive to my robotics meeting where I've loaded it up with several Programming applications and had the kids use the Sandisk Portable Drive to copy the application installations to their laptops and they've all been impressed with the speed of transfers. The team is considering purchasing a Sandisk Portable drive for an offline backup and to supplement some of the older laptops where they only came with 256 GB of storage. Here is what I don't get. The going rate for a portable hard drive at 1TB is about $150. This Sandisk is cheaper than that! It's offering the same storage size, 6x the speed, at just a fraction of the physical size. The Sandisk has no moving parts which also brings with it a drop rating of about 2 meters. Going with the Sandisk Portable Drive is really a no brainer.

The Sandisk 1TB Portable Drive is a great option compared to a traditional portable hard drive in an enclosure for a number of reasons: 1. Its faster than any spinning disk HDD. My 4TB HDD is relatively slow because it is powered over the USB bus with no enclosure with separate power adapter so it was only getting 73/78 MB/s read/writes. The Sandisk SSD was making good use of the 10Gbps of the USB 3.2 interface with 660/647 MB/s. The Sandisk also has much faster seek and random I/O speeds which means it will load small file details and thumbnails like pictures much faster. 2. Its smaller than a 2.5" HDD. My HDDs are a little larger than a deck of cards and about as heavy as a large smartphone. This Sandisk is small and thin, about the size and weight of a car key fob but thinner. 3. Its lighter than a 2.5" HDD. The Sandisk is lightweight so you can carry it in a pocket or backpack easily without adding the bulk of a HDD. 4. It is priced similarly to 1TB HDDs. This makes the Sandisk a pretty easy decision compared to the HDD offerings. One interesting thing to note is that the drive was not recognized when I plugged it into my iPhone 18 Pro Max nor does the packaging or documentation claim any support for iOS (macOS is supported however). So while this is not as fast as an NVMe drive in an enclosure, prices have really skyrocketed on NVMe SSDs. It is smaller and slightly faster than older SATA 2.5" SSDs so if you are in need of a new external storage option to increase storage now that everything has gotten so expensive, the Sandisk 1TB Portable drive is an excellent option to consider.

I've owned more than a fair shar of portable drives, but invariably as you need to get more storage they become less portable. My previous go to drive has been from the SanDisk professional series but this Sandisk 1TB Portable drive beats it hands down. First this drive is small, how small? I laughed when I opened the box, it's barely 10 credit cards high and about about 2/3 of the height and width of a credit card. To put it in perspective, this is so tiny it has a lanyard hook so you could attach it to a keyring (it kind of looks like an slightly thinner but slightly oversized key fob). Use wise, it's USB C, and there's a short USB C to USB C cable included. The drive is already formatted as exFAT, so it's plug and play across macOS and Windows. When you first use the drive, there is a 7Mb instructional PDF on the drive that encourages you to download software - but I didn't do that, it's a drive, it just works. In my tests, I'm getting close to the max theoretical speed of 600MB/s. I was also able to plug this Sandisk drive into my iPad Pro and it appeared in iOS File Manager (sadly Appled doesn't yet support this for iPhones). If you're after the fastest portable drive, that you can use on any device, and that will actually fit in your pocket or keychain, then this is the drive for you. BTW, photos don't do it justice, it's so small - even the box is oversized considering how small the drive is.

This little portable Sandisk drive is a nice, very compact, fast drive that delivers what it says it will deliver. First, this thing is tiny. I have short, skinny fingers and the profile is slightly larger than two fingers, and it is less than 10mm thick. The case seems rugged enough and the specs say it is drop resistant from 2 meters, which isn't all that high really. In the box is a short USB-C to USB-C cable, along with the usual paperwork. The enclosure is small enough that they even included a little hole to put it ona keychain or lanyard. This drive can be used across multiple devices, including my android phone, desktop pc, laptop, and tablet. USB-C does it all. The transfer speeds are close to what is claimed but that will depend on your particular hardware. Transferring 50GB files, the speed was around 575 MB/s, close to the 600 MB/s that Sandisk claims. At the time of this review the price is $129, which is a little less than I would expect for a 1TB drive in this class.
