Not top of the line but a great TV

I got this TV with the Black Friday deal. I did pose a question asking if PLEX could be installed. Sharp Adviser refused to answer and someone else gave an incorrect answer. The correct answer is Yes. PLEX and many other apps can be installed here. I know because the TV is sitting in my house right now with PLEX installed. It took less than a minute to install PLEX. So, from opening the box to watching TV took me about an hour and a half. I first had to disconnect and remove the old TV. When pulling this TV out of the box I was amazed at how light it was. I lay it on the bed and screwed the two stands on to the bottom. I placed the TV on the table and connected three HDMI cables. Satellite, Blu-Ray player and an older DVD/VHS player as well as a coax for an external antenna. I plugged the TV in to power and it automatically powered up into the setup mode which it walks you through. It quickly connected to my 5g network whereupon it spent several minutes automatically updating it’s software. I first checked the satellite connection and that worked fine. I then went to the antenna connection and let it scan for channels which again took a few minutes as it scanned for both over the air broadcast signals and cable signals. (I have no cable.) I then went through and hid (you can’t remove them completely) any over the air channels I didn’t want. Netflix and Amazon Prime apps (they’re called channels here) were already installed along with a number of other apps I don’t use. I installed Pluto, PLEX and half a dozen other apps and removed the apps I don’t use. There are hundreds of apps, channels and games available although some do cost. Either a flat fee or a subscription or you must have a cable or satellite subscription to use them. Menus and response times are plenty fast – especially considering the internet in the rural area I live in is extremely slow. It’s true what others say that you can’t pair a Bluetooth device unless you have already paired a Roku speaker with the TV. So if you have a Bluetooth soundbar you want to pair with this TV, it’s not going to happen. You have to own or purchase a Roku Bluetooth speaker. The televisions speakers are fine with me. So, you can’t connect your phone to the TV via Bluetooth to listen to music or watch videos from your phone. I don’t have a Roku speaker so can’t tell if it would work in that case. It does have two analog audio output jacks and one optical audio output jack. Your soundbar probably has one or the other of these and likely sits in front of your TV so although you can’t connect it via Bluetooth (unless it’s a Roku speaker) one of these connections should serve just fine. (My experience with sound bars taught me that the sound bar connects to the TV via optical cable, analog or ARC (HDMI 1 on this TV is ARC) and the sound bar connects to it’s own sub woofer via Bluetooth. I’m sure that’s not always the case though.) The remote is very simple and easy to use. The volume and mute buttons are on the side similar to most cellular phones. (I hate that feature and the volume and power buttons on my phone are on the back of the phone.) So I have to get used to that. The remote has those stupid dedicated buttons for certain streaming services. In this case, Netflix, Hulu, Sling and NOW. I don’t use these buttons and have always found them frustrating. Accidentally hit the Netflix button when picking up the remote to change a channel on Pluto, (or what ever you happen to be watching that is not Netflix), and you exit Pluto, have to wait for Netflix to start up and then you can switch back to Pluto. It would be nice if someone would provide a remote that made these buttons programmable so you can set them to select whatever streaming services you actually use or even be able to program them to other functions. I only use one of the services provided on these dedicated buttons and still don’t want the button. Of course, Sharp and Roku undoubtedly get paid by the streaming services for including these dedicated buttons. Even if you could reprogram them, you will still be pressing them accidentally. I’ll be opening up the remote and sticking some electrical tape under these buttons. Arrrrghh! Speak of the devil! I just accidentally hit the Sling button! No! I don’t want to sign up for Sling! Grrrrr. I installed the Roku app on my phone. It connects to the television via WiFi not Bluetooth. The button configuration is slightly different than the TV’s remote. The volume buttons are on the screen of course as well as a keyboard icon, which I haven’t tried, and a headphone icon. Plug headphones into your phone or connect wireless headphones to your phone via Bluetooth and you can listen to streaming and over the air content on the headphones by tapping this icon. Tap it again to turn the feature off. No headphones? The sound will come out of your phones speaker. Tapping this headphone icon automatically mutes the TV speakers so sound only comes out of your headphones. The volume buttons on the remote or phone app do nothing when using headphones. You must adjust volume using the phones volume and the headphone volume controls. For some reason you can’t use this headphone feature when watching satellite television. It works with streaming content and over the air content only. I tested this and it’s a fact. I chose satellite and the icon got a red line through it. Try tapping it and get a message telling you it’s not available. You can plug a USB thumb drive into this TV to enable use of the pause live TV feature. This feature only works with streaming services. It will pause a program for up to ninety minutes and allow you to start, stop, fast forward and rewind. However, you can’t actually record and save programs. Also, if you should pause a program and change channels, your paused program is immediately and completely deleted from your USB thumb drive and you can’t go back and watch it. Now, I bought the 40 inch HDTV and not the 4k version. I’m not a videophile. I just want to watch TV. The picture and sound are plenty good for my purposes and I have no complaints other than those dedicated streaming buttons on the remote, but that seems to be an industry standard now-a-days. $$$ This model must be a Best Buy exclusive as I was unable to find it on the Sharp website at all. Actually, for the price I paid for this TV I am pretty much ecstatic. This is only day one of using so I hope it’s not one of those TV’s that craps out in three months. As for now, I highly recommend this television. It’s far from top of the line, but I’m sure it will meet the needs of an average TV viewer like me.

    Nice TV for bedroom

We were looking for a replacement TV for our master bedroom and didn't really need anything fancy since it isn't our main TV. We got this around Black Friday and the price was right. It had more features on it than we needed, but figured we could also give Roku a try if we ever decided to get rid of our satellite. The TV is very nice and has a great crisp picture. The sound seems a little muffled but I'm guessing it is because the new TV's have the speakers in the back and not the front so with it being hung on the wall it gets muffled. Not going to spend the money on an additional speaker for a spare TV. It was fairly simple to set up however like most items, no true instruction book so they leave it up to you to figure it out or find the answers elsewhere. There is a very bright blue light on the TV which I guess is for Roku. Don't know but found it very annoying in a dark bedroom to have this bright light shining at me. Found a way to turn this off by googling it. There are many features within the menu that they don't tell you about - you have to explore on your own (or google). I also found it annoying that every time I turned on the TV it went to the Roku menu. Is it a big deal? No, but the extra step of having to get the TV remote to select satellite was very annoying. We usually use our satellite remote for everything, but to change the menu you had to use the TV/Roku remote. So again, I found on google where I could locate this setting on the TV so when I turn on my TV it now goes straight to the satellite. I haven't really played with the Roku app yet but that isn't why we bought the TV so not a high priority. Overall we are very pleased with the TV now that we have figured out how to modify some settings to make it work better for us. Where would we be without google?

Great TV and value for what it is

Picked this up on sale for $179.99 for a bedroom tv. This TV is solid for what you pay for. If you are expecting this to compare to a $600-$1000 tv then you have unrealistic expectations. My main purpose of this TV was to have in the bedroom to watch at night and use the Roku app to stream the Spectrum app so I could get rid of the bedroom cable box and save $10/month on my cable bill without giving up any convenience. The Roku app is extreamly easy and having 1 remote to run everything instead of a remote for the tv and another for the cable box is so convenient. The quality of the streaming app is better then the cable box. If you’re buying this TV and expecting superior quality for movies and gaming you’re being unrealistic. This may not be the best TV for viewing full time for all your movies, tv, and gaming needs in your main room, but this is the PERFECT 2nd tv for the bedroom to watch at night. The features you get with this tv at this size for this price is hard to come by. I’m usually a Sony or LG person for TV’s and probably would not spend thousands on a Sharp, but you cannot beat the quality and value for this Sharp 40 inch Roku. If you have any concerns of buying it, don’t. You will not be disappointed.

Not a TV with Roku, it's Roku with a TV!

I picked this up 4 hours ago then took the time to set it up just to find out that this is not really a TV. Let me explain. This is not a TV with Roku, it is Roku with a TV attached. I turned this device on and immediately was directed to create a Roku account. There did not appear to be any way around this. I could not just turn the TV on and use it. As I started looking into the Roku account, I found that I would have HAD to put in a credit card to cover purchases. I HAD NO PLAN TO MAKE ANY PURCHASES! So at that point I had to scrutinize the agreement that I would have HAD to agreed to so I could even get to the TV. You should understand that any device that you have to agree to any policies to use, your use will be tracked. They track what channels you watch, what shows you watch, how long you watch........ you get my point? No, I am not paranoid. That is the price of some services, I understand that. One of the reasons they track this information, ADVERTISING! It makes it so that they can target you with advertising. Um, I wanted to use the TV to watch cable, occasionally watch Amazon Prime and use as a computer monitor also. I did not buy this to be an advertising target. I thought I was buying a TV but I was mistaken, I bought a service that would target me whether I wanted it to or not. Let me reiterate, I found out was paying to be a target for advertising. I did not create the Roku account. I turned the TV off and packed it up. Tomorrow it will be going back.

    Inconsistent Picture Quality

I wanted a new TV in time for Game of Thrones’ season premiere and was blown away by how great the Sharp 40" Roku TV's images looked on HBO/GOT, but when I explored non-premium HD channels I was disappointed to find inconsistent picture quality. Images were bright but lacked depth. Onscreen faces looked like flat photos or were mottled. I am currently trying to figure how to improve picture quality in Settings for HDMI source. The quality of the streaming content depends on quality of original source (especially YouTube) but I naturally expected consistent quality from my DirecTV HD channels. (My go-to test is to look at separations in strands of hair.) My 10-yr-old 720p Sylvania had consistent, crisper images and realistic 20watt (10w x 2) sound. I guess new tech has its advantages but old tech was solid and more dependable. I'm not an expert, but there must be a reason for the fluctuating image quality. (Different tech, I guess...or did Sharp get bought out - making it "Sharp" in name only? I've seen internet rumors.) The remote is a bit sluggish but I’ve gotten use to its temperament. I must decide in a few days if I want to keep it as a “value-based purchase” for a second bedroom TV, or exchange this Sharp for a Samsung TV.

I bought this tv online and picked up in store. I paid about $200 with tax. The first tv I picked up had a bad screen, so returned without issue. I have purchased a Roku tv before just another brand. I ditched cable about 6yrs ago and started with a roku streaming stick. I love the roku platform and decided to purchase a tv that has the roku built in. This is my first sharp television and for the price, it’s great! The only issue I have are the speakers. They are small and require a volume of at least 25-30 to hear. The quality of the picture is good. The only thing I would recommend is that if this were to be in a common living space such as the living room, you should definitely consider adding a sound bar or surround sound. I would purchase this tv again for a bedroom, but not for a noisy space. Overall, This tv was a great deal and I would recommend!

Let's cut to the chase....I wanted to dish out 5 stars, but couldn't quite get my finger to do that. That said, $159 smackers this is a solid set. Roku Technology is about as easy to Navigate as it gets (Take Note Apple TV), and the unit at just under 15 pounds was a snap to wall mount. It sure has come a long way from my $3k, 90lb, 42" plasma beast back in the day. Anyway folks, remember this an 1080p rated tv (high definition only), which for all practical purposes is older technology compared to what we have available to us in 2019. Think, UHD, 4K, OLED, ULED, etc, etc, etc. I don't know if the picture quality would have met our needs in the Family Room, but for our kitchen Island area, it was perfect! That said for the price and functionality it just doesn't get any easier to use a set. One small snag, coming from a very picky person....The plastic around the set could have been a little bit nicer as it tends to give off a small distracting glare, but other than that , the set is very solid unit at this entry level price point. Great Job Bestbuy, Sharp and Roku...4.5 Stars all the way!

If I had known that the Roku TV could not easily move from channel to channel then I would not have purchased this TV. Since the remote does not have a number pad you have to move through each tv channel individually. For example, if I am on channel 2 and want to switch to channel 30, I have to scroll channel by channel until I get there. There is an app that can be downloaded to your mobile device but the number pad on that does not change the channels. Wish I had researched the Roku TV before buying (I found the remote to be the biggest complaint on reviews). If you only want to use the streaming features then it is a marvelous tv. If, however, you want to watch cable tv or local broadcasts then I would think twice on this one!!!

Moved the 32" SHARP to the rear bedroom. Purchased the 40" SHARP for the front living room in our 42' motor home on Thanksgiving Day 2018. Had a few issues when editing channels. The unit would lock up and then repeat start up. I called Sharp and Adam walked me through a complete restart and set up. He is such a pro at what he does. NO more problems and the TV is just as I had hoped. It is a SHARP and I am very happy with the help I received over the phone. I purchased the extended 5 year warranty on both. I have a feeling I won't need them though. Best Buy is really living up to their name. The 32" SHARP is on it's 3rd year with flawless operation and I am very confident that the 40" SHARP will also be a BEST BUY. Other brands are out there, but the quality and price sold me on SHARP.

I bought this for my son's room first(for his PS4) and seen it wasn't horrible and bought another for our room. The only real complaint I have it's Heavy in Chroma meaning to much color. I'm a working professional in the TV production field for 32yrs and I know this isn't one we use at work, still with that being said I had to turn the color way down to get close to true flesh tones. It's heavy on the Red,Blue side, just too rich in color"RGB". It's like buying a speaker and its over loaded on the bass or treble just not "Flat" and adjustable from there If you catch it on sale like I did don't hesitate to get one for the price can not beat it, came w/Roku built in, light weight and again seems decent time will really tell.

I purchased this Sharp 40" smart TV with Roku for my motorhome. The 40" TV in the motorhome was just a plain LED flat screen. What an awesome TV. The picture quality is very good; it pairs to my Verizon jetpack with no delay (unlike my 55" Samsung that required multiple shutdowns to connect) and over the air channels and Roku settings are very easy to navigate. The remote has preset buttons to access Hulu, Netflix, Sling, etc with volume controls and mute buttons on the side. Overall I'm delighted with the purchase and the Roku features - haven't found anything yet to make me dislike it.

I got this during the great deal on Black Friday for only one fifty. So happy with the price, I bought two and gave one as a gift! The Roku was new to me but set up was pretty easy and there are lots of apps available ( I loaded about 75 of them) I like that you can get local news apps from stations from around the country and favorite pro and college team apps. But then I was not too happy with the standard settings, (too bright, too dark, overbloomed, no detail in dark areas.) But after calibrating with a Blu-ray of Digital Video Essentials HD Basics, The new Roku remote with no numbers took no time to get used to. Not a 4k tv but, I was very impressed with the sharpness, clarity and colors of this TV.

I picked up this set on Black Friday for a great price, having owned TVs with integrated Roku devices I thought I knew what I was getting into, but I was wrong. This is not a TV with a Roku stuck in an HDMI port with a single remote... think of it as a Roku with a tuner, speakers and a display. All functions of the TV are accessed from the Roku menu and there is only one button on the TV itself, that button allows you to power the TV on/off and change inputs. Picture quality is decent, sound is meh (almost expected with TVs this thin) and as with any Roku, it can be controlled from the mobile app. Sound can also be routed to the controlling mobile device for a private listening experience.

I got this tv on sale and I'm very happy with it based on how much I paid. Sure it can be slow at times but I got a great deal and I can wait an extra second or two for Netflix to load (which is the only app I have issues with). Netflix updates don't do well on this tv at first but it gets better with software updates. Picture quality and sound are better than I expected and the remote has a pretty big target area for it to work. Some Roku TVs are very picky with where you're pointing the remote for it to work, but not this one. Which is a great thing for a tv in the bedroom. There are better TVs out there, but this is a fantastic budget TV. I don't know if I would pay full price for this TV, but if you can get a good discount I would pull the trigger.

The TV was offered at a good price and I have had good luck with Sharp products in the past. We needed a new TV for the Master Bedroom which is fairly large so the 40" TV was perfect. I THOUGHT I would be able to try the Roku App and If I didn't like it I could just not use it. I didn't want to be FORCED to use the Roku App and menu every time I want to watch TV. In particular, my wife is not great with new technology and this just adds one more issue because you have to go to the Roku App Menu every time you turn on the TV. Then you have to select Cable Box and push enter. So, you ALWAYS have to use TWO (2) remotes because even though the Comcast remote can turn the TV on and off and adjust the volume it cannot select a choice from the Roku menu! I absolutely would NOT Recommend any Roku TV!!!

I bought this tv to replace a 10 year old TV which stopped working. This model was in stock and had decent reviews. I am 75 years old and did not need an upscale model. The price was very good since it was on sale. I purposely purchased a TV which used the ROKU platform which I already had on several other TV's which I had. It took about twenty minutes to pare it to my WI and connect to my Blue Ridge cable box. The picture is fine as is the sound. The only problem I had was on start up I had to use the roku remote to get cable but after going using the roku remote I found how to set up the tv to automatically go to the cable box upon start-up.

Awesome Tv ... I love this tv , the quality of the picture is crystal clear ... I set it up in 15 min ... I love Roku because it’s so easy to use plus it comes with apps ready to start up . It comes with 30 days of sling tv. You have internet then good to go because it it’s a smart tv . I set up the internet and loaded apps I wanted . I don’t have cable in bedroom but with Roku there’s plenty to pick from. I have had a Sharp 60 in 3D tv for 5 yrs and it’s awesome.. you can’t beat the price , is a great buy .

I love Roku as we had streaming sticks before however, not sure I’m in love with this Roku TV. Purchased a TCL Roku tv for our bedroom and bought this to replace our Roku stick in the living room. This TV shuts down programs often or simply locks up and restarts. The remote hasn’t worked on occasion. We have kept it thinking it was the internet connection but not so sure now due to the number of times it’s happened. Plus, we have 25 mps Internet which I would think would be sufficient seeing as how there isn’t lag in the streaming. Thinking of returning but haven’t found a similar product for a similar price yet.

This is the perfect solution to add a TV where there is no cable outlet. We do have a cable account with Spectrum, so we can use the Spectrum app (and HBO app) to watch channels that we're already paying for...without paying for another cable box. We had some buffering issues at first, but I learned that we were on an old Time Warner plan. As soon as I switched to one of the new Spectrum plans (which is actually cheaper), our WiFi speed doubled and our buffering issues disappeared. Also, the sound and picture on this TV is great. It will take a bit of time and patience to setup the Roku account and the apps that are relevant to you, but we are SO HAPPY with this purchase.

My criteria for a good tv are visual, sound quality and ease of use. While I have always been a fan of Sharp electronics, this Roku experience was not anything I was used to. The navigation quality is on par with my Apple TV which is also excellent. The picture quality for a tv of this size and price is far better than expected and very simple to adjust if needed. The biggest surprize to me was the sound. It has a great range of sound with a deep bass and high treble which is important to me so I dont have the extra expense of a sound bar. For the price and ease of use. This is an excellent purchase and I highly recommend it.
