As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a unit in exchange for an unbiased review. So far, this is the second set of Sony earphones I've reviewed. The first ones were fantastic, conventionally-styled (over the head) earphones that were of typical Sony sound reproduction as well as solid electronic noise-cancelling. This over-the-shoulder unit is no less in the same way -- great sound, excellent noise cancellation, and lots of ways to customize. Besides the box in which Sony ships the earphones (which itself is worthy of holding on to), there is a veritable kit of items that go along with the unit: a very well-made black fabric zippable bag (with two pockets inside), a full set of multi-sized ear bud replacements, a USB power cord, a USB-to-3.5mm stereo jack cord, and even an airplane adapter. The unit paired up with my phone nearly instantly, and in the case of iOS, there's even a headphone icon in the status bar for quick-glance status. Sony includes two free iOS apps (Android likely has the same situation) that can be downloaded that do two things: one takes your music library -- even if cloud-based -- and manages it for you, and the second allows exceptionally granular modification of the earphone's settings. Overall, great packaging and legendary Sony sound. If you're in the market for over-the-shoulder-based earphones, this unit should definitely be a contender for your music -- and phone -- needs.

I’m no audiophile but I know what sounds good and these fit the bill. Great sounding with plenty of bass that doesn’t make the music sound distorted. The band could be more comfortable but it’s not a huge nuisance.

I own several high end headsets ranging from over-the-ear headsets and several pairs of earbuds. I am typically less impressed with the earbuds, but these are the exception. They paired easily and the sound is outstanding. I'll start by mentioning that my first experience with these were on a flight. Once the plane started moving, i put these in my ears and was amazed at how much noise they canceled out. Sony provided an application to download to a mobile device and this allowed me to customize my experience. There is a feature for the application to sense the noise levels and automatically adjust to the surrounding sound. I have never seen anything like this. There are a handful of sound modes to further customize the sound. The extra bass was outstanding and the sound quality rivals high end over-the-ear headsets. The package includes a nice carrying bag, a charging cable and several sizes of ends for various ear sizes. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to test out battery life, as they didn't drain much during my two hour flight. Finally, the audio quality was very good for a telephone conversation. I didn't have any complaints from the other end of my conference call. I'll be using these daily, Easily the best earbud headset that i have ever listened to.

The sound is decent and the noise cancelling works pretty well. The overall design is a bit annoying though. The parts felt too flimsy and the buttons are on the inside of the band. For someone of a larger build, this is not comfortble to use. I do not recommend using these while doing physical activities as the band just bounces around and just feels strange. The battery life was pretty good, but doesn't make up for the overall negatives.

The Sony 1000X are true, active noise-cancelling headphones, not just “noise reduction” headphones. They feature in-ear buds connected with a wire to a neck band control. Controls are located on the inside of the left side of the band and, as is always the case with headphone buttons you can’t see, the controls are hard to determine just with touch and take time to get used to which buttons are where & what they control. Controls include power, volume up, volume down, and a multi-function pause/play/next/previous button, depending on the number of times in a row you push it. The single button on the right of the band controls the 3 levels of noise cancellation (noise cancelling, ambient, off). The neck band is padded to increase comfort over longer-term wear or use when exercising when the band will likely move around on the neck. Sounds quality is very good, but occasionally a little high on the bass. Like other wireless headphones, it requires the use of the Sony Headphones App to control the equalizer but comes with a tradeoff - you must change the quality mode from the default of “Priority on Sound Quality” to “Priority on Stable Connection”, which is usually used for poor or skipping connections. This tradeoff of control over the equalizer comes at the cost of a slight drop in sound quality as it prioritizes connection over quality. They seem to have a problem cancelling sound when there is a loud, abrupt noise nearby. I closed a door on my desk and it cancelled it with a loud, uncomfortable pop noise. This was repeated with the same results, so not just an anomaly. I tried the same move with another (unnamed brand) of noise-cancelling headphones and they did NOT do the same thing, so something specific to the Sony brand. Not a huge deal but is a bug nonetheless. The headphones also include “Adaptive Sound Control” which detects what activity you’re doing at the time (Staying, Walking, Running, or Transit) and adjusts the amount of noise cancellation & ambient sounds allowed accordingly. For example, “Running” will result in a maximum setting for ambient noise allowed in since you want to be able to hear more of your surroundings, while “Transit” turns the noise cancellation all the way up (thus turning ambient noise to a zero) so you don’t have to hear the other annoying passengers. Just don’t miss your subway stop by not hearing the overhead announcements. You can adjust the auto settings with the Headphones App. The headphones come with one set of silicone ear buds pre-installed, plus 3 other sizes of silicone as well as 3 sizes of “Triple Comfort Earbuds” which are a little more comfortable when worn for a longer time, but found the fit wasn’t as good & the ambient sound was higher than the silicone, but they also the reduced the “bass” problem with the headphones. I found the silicone earbuds have a bad tendency to flip themselves inside out when removing them from your ears. Additionally, it includes several cables, including a micro USB for changing (no charging block), a wired micro USB-to-single jack airplane cord, as well as a 2-prong airplane adapter for in-flight entertainment. The case included leaves a lot to be desired. A soft zippered case does nothing to protect the headphones when thrown into a bag. Also, there is no way to completely stow the headphone buds. The neck band allows you to secure the earbud wires, but the buds themselves remain free to dangle & possibly get damaged. I would have liked to have seen at least a semi-rigid case for the headphones at this price. Overall, these are excellent in-ear noise-cancelling headphones. And while I do still prefer the over-the-ear noise-cancelling headphones for true shut down of outside sound, these don’t leave you with “headphone hair” and work better if you wear glasses or sunglasses (the arms leave a gap in the over-the-ear headphones, which allows more unwanted sound in). A great choice for noise-cancelling headphones.

    Comfortable Headset, Great Sound

The only noise cancelling headsets I've ever previously owned were the Bose Quietcomfort models, so I'll compare these to the Bose, although there is an "apples and oranges" situation with the comparison as the Bose were "over the ear" models and this is an "in ear" design. The setup was easy. you download the free Sony app for your smartphone and you have total control over your 1000X. One distinct advantage that I saw immediately and liked over the Bose was that you have a very good audio equalizer on the app to change the EQ to your liking. There are some fixed settings (I like the "Excited" setting) or you can custom your personal sound with the 5 EQ controls. Bose headsets offer NO such customization. Amar Bose, the founder decided that customers should listen to their music the way HE decided so the fact that you can easily tailor your listening is a Sony plus. The sound of these phones are truly amazing. I have never heard such clean bass from an "in ear" headphone. The highs are bright and clear as well. The sound to me is as clear as the Bose and the customization gives extra credit to the 1000X. The Bose Quietcomfort 35 wins the noise cancelling contest however. Standing right by my furnace I compared the two. When you clicked on the Bose unit the fan noise disappeared. With the 1000X the higher frequencies of the fan went away but the lower frequency was still apparent (and yes, I turned up the noise cancelling feature up full on the app.) . Another plus for the Bose is battery life. The Bose offers almost 20 hours between charges, the Sony about half that. Bottom line, the sound from these phones are AMAZING and lifelike. The wires are long enough so that you can swing your head without fear of the plugs falling out of your ears (Different size ear buds are provided!) They are very comfortable to wear for extended listening and I think you look less "nerd like" listening to the Sony over the Bose. You will not be disappointed with the sound or comfort of the 1000X.

This is my first Bluetooth headset so you may want to take that into consideration. I have had Bluetooth earpieces and speakers for many years I am pleasantly surprised by how they feel. I expected heavier. The Noise cancelling is very good. I am testing with an older Samsung S4 Music playback is very good with lots of control. I use with Amazon Music. Phone works well. I tested on a business call and person on other end had no problem understanding me. They did however recognize a slight "twang" after I stopped talking but no issues during conversation. Probably no worse that any other Bluetooth device, possibly better. Easy to connect I didn't even download the app. I was not able to get NFC working

The box and packaging are super premium, looks like these would be worth the hefty price tag. Super easy and intuitive to turn on, connect to my phone and iPad with no issues. Sound quality is great, great high's and bass. Pure sound, very clear. However, i don't like that there is no hard storage case with these, for the price tag, they should have included one, no question. Also, the control buttons don't work when using them as wired headphones. i thought this was some kid of mistake? Why wouldn't they work? strange... the buttons are hard to push/find anyway. Last con: the battery life... only 10 hours wireless, that's a little too short for my liking. Overall, Id still recommend, especially if you can get them for a few dollars off the $300 price.

The headphones took a few tries to connect with my iPhone but once they did I didnt have any issues. The sound quality was good. The key to using the headphones was downloading the Sony Headphone app. This allowed you to make all kinds of adjustments to the sound settings and noise reduction settings. The noise reduction is pretty good for earbuds but not as good and the over the ear models.

These headphones were very nice. The sound was great and noise cancellation was also great. My biggest problem with these headphones was that volume control would drop to the lowest setting whenever I went to YouTube or any other website. I played with it for a couple of days and gave up so I returned them back to Best Buy.

I had been looking for a pair of neck-band style headphones for quite some time. Initially I was interested in the Bose QC 30 which has great sound and a stylish design. What stopped me from buying the Bose was the sound quality of its microphone as my goal was to be able to use the device for both listening to music and making phone calls. So I decided to purchase the Sony instead. So far I am very happy with it. It matches both sound quality and noise canceling with the Bose QC 30 and there is no issue whatsoever with the microphone! What I also like about the Sony is that it has a button on the neck-band that allows you to switch between ambient sound on/off and noise cancelling, a neat feature which the Bose doesn't have. The app also has more features than that of the Bose.

    Buy Bose

I had the Bose Quiet Comfort earbuds which were stolen, so replaced them with these. Sony's sound quality is good and the part around the neck is comfortable. Overall they feel like they will last. Unfortunately that is about only good things about these. As to the noise cancelling feature, Bose is 10,000 times better. Bose also wins as to ease of use and the Bose App is far easier to navigate. the actual earbuds on the Bose also seem to fit better, even after trying the several different ones that come with the Sony buds. Bose's case included with their set is also far superior to Sony's cloth bag. To say the least, I wish I had not listed to the Best Buy employee and re-purchased the Bose Quiet Comfort set again. Very disappointed with these after having the Bose. if you really want good noise cancelling and quality sound, go with the Bose...

Sitting on an airplane all you want is NOT to hear crying babies since you have NC. It takes a better part of forever to get connection trough Apple products. NC is OK but not the best. Not as compared to a NC headphone. Still debating if I should keep or return it.
