My how times have changed. Jan 2008, bought a 42" Sony from COSTCO.$1499. Not smart, 1080p. This? 6t" 4k $1499 and the picture is SUPERB. Geek Squad installed and wall mounted, programmed it...boom!

Excellent TV for Quality & Budget!

I initially was going to save an additional $1,000 and opt for an OLED. In fact, I was going to wait until I could afford a 75" or 85" inch screen. But in fact, for this price (which is now under $1,100)- it simply was too good to ignore. I will break down the pros (and slight cons) of this overall exceptional set.
PROS
Picture Quality: A
You can never go wrong from a Sony, but I feel this screen is gorgeously crisp and doesn't need much adjusting out the box. If you're a movie buff like myself, you will want to immediately turn OFF the Motion-Flow (aka Soap Opera effect) and then in pressing your Action Settings on the remote, go down to Picture Adjustments and set it to Cinema Pro. You will notice other options, like Cinema Home, Standard, Sports, etc. But Cinema Pro actually sets the resolution the EXACT way pro filmmakers wanted you to view the film. And often how they are screened in movie theaters. It may seem a little dimmer then the more Vivid Sports feature (which I do recommend if watching a game), but at night when you're watching movies in the dark- the colors and black contrasts are unmatched. Sony's X1 Processor help boost this to the best levels possible for a mid-range set.
To test how strong this picture quality is in HDR 4K, if you subscribe to Netflix- select Planet Earth II and be prepared to be wowed by the impeccable sharpness, clarity and brightness of the wildlife and scenery. It's spectacular! And 65" is still a big screen to behold this on (I am upgrading from a 55" myself). Buy an HDR 4K Ultra Blu-Ray player too. Discs will still give you a more finessed look, and I got my Sony player for under $200 and it released this year.
Price: A
A 2017 Sony 65" (better reviewed then its 850F companion of this year thanks to the VA panels the company installed in the E0, and $1100 is a steal. I recommend Geek Squad's installation ONLY because this is a big set requiring two people - why not just let someone else handle all the stress? I also got a stand to match the TV from Best Buy, and GeekSquad gave me a bundle price so they could also assemble the stand and I didn't have to lift a finger. Worth the small extra cost.
Ease of Use/Apps: A-
Disregard reviewers that are complaining this set lags. ALL Android based devices will, and while it can be annoying to wait those few extra seconds - its not a problem. The set comes preloaded with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Now, ShowTime, ESPN Zone, and many others so no need to really download much. Once you get your Google Voice activated, you can speak what show or actor you're interested, and it works lightening fast.
The remote is also easy to utilize. No backlight is a bit disappointing, but that's the norm with Sony's products. I do wish they could combine all the tools into one big remote vs having to deal with multiple ones.
Also- if you hook up a Xbox, Playstation or Blu-Ray player you don't have to fuss about switching the Input on the remote. Simply turn on your actual device, and the screen will automatically take you to that device.
Design: A
Sleek, thin, mostly all screen. It will tilt a little backwards, but that is normal. The ambience of the white light under the center by the SONY branding is a nice tough.
CONS
No set is without a few issues.
Jitter Effect: B
If you stream shows, you might notice certain programs or movies will cause the tv to jitter (jump). This is normal with 4Ks, still fairly new out the gate. Even if 95% of programing is still 1080, the mechanics of the device have to deal with it.
Internet Connection/Buffering: C+ (Solved with Ethernet cable)
I have to say, internet connection on here is a hit or miss. When I first had the set, the TV kept losing signal and that is not fun when in the middle of a movie or show. The solution is to simply get an Ethernet cable, and run it from your modem directly to your TV's ethernet port. Worked like a charm. Now programs are super fast to load. You can still use Wifi on your modem with computer devices. But TVs like really need that wired convenience unless you have the modem directly next to the set.
Sound Quality: Sound Bar (N/A)
Because I purchased a sound bar, I can't comment on the sound. However, based on other reviews it seems like most thin sets, you might be wise to purchase one. It makes a difference compared to my 55" Sony I had in 2014 with no soundbar.
3D: NO
My only real con is no 3D (Which is a dying breed). But for someone like me who collected many 3D BluRays with my previous set, its a drawback. The good news is that if you purchase an Ultra-4K Blu Ray player (Sony, Samsung the best), 3D capabilities are still there- in case they decide to bring it back. Only the big $4,000 sets have 3D still enabled.
_____
Over-all, VERY pleased with my purchase! This TV is a super bargain, better equipped and reviewed then this year's model, and cheaper. On top of having outstanding picture quality. Who cares if it lacks local dimming? That actually can be a burden to some viewers. Enjoy!

I had this tv for about a month. It had great color, but any dark sence in 4k hdr would have light bleed in all four corners taking up almost half the screen. The interface is also very slow taking up to 10 seconds after a buttton was pressed. Payed a bit extra to trade for the Samsung 65 NU8000 and would recommend the same to anyone looking.

**Sony 65" LED X850E Series Review: A Reliable Performer Since 2017**
I've had my Sony 65" LED X850E Series TV since 2017, and it has truly been a solid and reliable performer. From the start, the picture quality impressed me with its vibrant colors, deep blacks, and sharp detail. Even after several years of use, the display still holds up incredibly well, and the 4K resolution makes movies, sports, and gaming look fantastic.
The TV’s design is sleek and modern, with slim bezels that give it a high-end feel without being overly flashy. The X850E has a great balance of aesthetics and functionality, with a sturdy stand that holds it firmly in place on a TV console. It also includes built-in Android TV, which provides a seamless experience for streaming, apps, and even Google Assistant integration. The interface is user-friendly, and updates have kept it running smoothly over the years.
Performance-wise, the X850E has consistently delivered. The motion handling is impressive, especially during fast-paced scenes like sports or action movies. The sound quality, while not as rich as high-end soundbars, is clear enough for daily use, and I've only added external speakers for a more immersive experience when needed.
The TV's durability has been noteworthy as well. After nearly seven years, I’ve experienced zero significant issues—no dead pixels, no noticeable dimming, and no slowdown in performance. Whether it's casual TV watching, gaming, or streaming 4K content, the X850E has remained reliable and relevant even as newer models with more advanced technologies have entered the market.
Overall, the Sony 65" LED X850E Series has been a fantastic investment. Its longevity, consistent picture quality, and smart features make it a standout choice, even years after its release. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a solid, all-around TV experience.

X850E is MUCH better than 2018 X850F -- act now!

I've had the Sony 65X850E for a month and find the picture quality and overall performance to be excellent. In fact, I'm convinced that it is the best 65" 4K TV under $1500 and is nearly equal to that of the more expensive Sony 65X900E.
Special Note: The 2018 model of X850-series was just introduced, the X850F, and it is a worse performing TV than the 65X850E. Rtings' site just reviewed it and it doesn't come close to the X850E in picture quality. The newer X850F has significantly worse contrast, poor black levels, and no wide color gamut. Why would Sony do this, you ask? Simple. The 2017 65X850E was SO close in performance to their very popular (and more expensive) X900E that many people found little or no advantage in paying an extra $400 for the X900E --that's how similar they are in picture quality and performance. To "push" consumers to opt for the more expensive 2018 X900F this year, Sony has gone back to using an IPS-type LCD on the new X850F compared to the superior VA-panels used in the X850E and X900E. So, if you are on the fence, I strongly recommend you buy the 65X850E while they're still in stock since the newer X850F has been severely downgraded in performance.
Here's what I found in my comparison shopping and side-by-side evaluations of the 65X850E:
65X850E Pros:
Unbeatable black uniformity, gray uniformity, and contrast ratio (the key features of picture quality, especially for movies). The 65X850E is the only TV tested by Rtings.com to earn green scores (very good to excellent) in these three categories --only OLEDs can match this performance.
Best-in-class upscaling of non-4K sources. Since this is 99% of what most people watch (cable, Blu-ray, DVD) it only take a few minutes to see why Sony leads in this area.
Excellent 4K and HDR performance. Great brightness, clarity, and wide color gamut. Handles Netflix HDR content seamlessly with beautiful detail. HDR is plenty bright for rooms with normal lighting.
Uses a VA-type LCD which is best for developing deep blacks and high contrast. NOTE: The 75" version of this TV (75X850E) uses an IPS-type LCD and can't develop the deep blacks and high contrast of the 65" version. So, review comments for the 65" X850E with regards to picture quality may not the same for the 75" X850E.
TV itself is very attractive. Case is thin but has a sturdy, black metal frame construction. The border around the LCD is very thin. Center stand includes hidden channels for cable management.
65X850E Cons:
No local dimming feature. Local dimming, when combined with very powerful backlighting, is designed to boost contrast and color with HDR content. However, local dimming often introduces blooming/ghosting of bright highlights on dark backgrounds and other noticeable brightness fluctuations. I personally prefer the uniform lighting characteristic of the X850E as it doesn't introduce any bad effects during viewing.
Like most LCD TVs, the picture clarity drops off when viewed from the sides. The only way to improve this is to buy an IPS-type LCD TV (most LG LCD TVs are this type) or OLED. IPS-type LCDs have good viewing angles but poor contrast and black uniformity. OLEDs are great but are currently quite expensive and prone to permanent image burn-in.
Overall, the Sony 65X850E provides best-in-class image quality no matter if the input is non-HD, HD, or 4K. The HDR performance is more than adequate for standard room lighting conditions. Most importantly, the 65X850E is nearly the equal of the X900E in every performance aspect and for a more reasonable price. You won't go wrong with the 65X850E and it's easily the best TV we've ever owned!

This is my first Smart TV purchase and hopefully my last for the next 10+ years. I did a boat load of research prior to selecting this Sony model. The items that were most important to me:
4K Ultra
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
120Hz Refresh Rate
Smart TV Apps
3+ HDMI ports (Has 4!)
65" or bigger
<$1500
My research and reading of reviews narrowed things down between Samsung and Sony. I was leaning towards Samsung after seeing my brother's Samsung TV but after reading reviews, I found 4.7/5 star ratings for both this Sony and the 9000 series Samsung but the Samsung as of last week when I purchased was $500 more expensive! I've always been happy with Sony products in my lifetime (TV's, stereos components, DVD players, car stereos, Playstations, etc.)
Anyway, onto the TV itself. Initial setup is super easy, connects to Wifi easily, the AndroidTV app platform is very easy to navigate and setup, the remote is just enough - not too many features and not too simple either. I am using the included stand, which was easy to mount and is very sturdy and most importantly, fits on a narrow TV stand/table. Other TV's have the legs on the far sides of the screen which won't be compatible for a more narrow table/stand. The picture and sound ports are on the same side and there is a built-in zip tie thingy for neat and clean cabling/wiring. The picture...WOW. After some tweaking, I've never seen a TV with a better picture than this. After reading some Sony blogs and professional reviews and playing with the custom TV settings, I found that the preset settings look the best. You'll find something that looks great no matter what lighting your room presents. I can't comment on the TV speakers because I'm using a sound bar (but every flat panel TV in my experience has poor speaker quality). After a week, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I'm sure there are many features that I haven't even dug into yet, such as the voice controlled remote. The ARC HDMI port is also intriguing as apparently an ARC compatible sound bar will allow the TV remote to control the sound bar volume also. That will be my next addition down the road. Netflix shows look great, NFL games on FIOS are awesome, and COD WW2 on PS4 is out of this world! I haven't tried a BluRay yet but I am looking forward to that! You won't regret buying this TV. They really seem to have thought of everything and I can't imagine having more features than this TV has for the price. Well done, Sony!
