Amazing quality camera for the price

This Sony HDR-CX405 Handycam camera is a great product. The price is unbelievable for what you get. This is Sony, it's basically all I buy. This is a very basic camera without any bells and whistles. The picture quality is very good during daylight and normal bright conditions. At night and during dark scenes however, it lacks in its ability to deliver a quality image without a lot of image noise. It does have a low-light mode that does help a little. The camera is very lightweight. Some people think that it is cheaply built. But there are advantages to going towards an ultra-light camera. It is certainly easier to hold up in the air with your arms for longer periods of time than traditional cameras that have some weight to them. However, parts on the camera probably tend to break much more easily. For me, there is a little plastic flap that covers where the memory card goes and I have managed to leave that open, while the screen slammed shut and bent the hinges on the little flap. It still works and didn't break, but it is bent now but it still closes properly and completely. The other side of the camera has a smaller plastic flap that covers a single input. That little plastic cover flap gets snagged on my hand often, when I put my hand up through the hand-strap to hold the camera properly. It won't last too long and will no doubt break at some point, especially when I'm grabbing my camera as I'm going to film another viral video. They should have made the plastic cover to have the hinge on the opposite side or something. Poor design on the plastic flap covers. The view-screen is not touch-screen, but instead you will use a tiny joystick to move the cursor around on the screen and you press the center of the joystick to make selections. It has a built-in speaker with volume control that allows you to watch back your recorded video while being able to listen to it too. The screen flips out from the camera. The screen can then be rotated so that the person that the camera is recording can see themselves on the screen at the same time. Perfect for recording video selfies or taking selfie photos too. The menus could be constructed better and might take a little getting accustomed to before you feel comfortable knowing where all of the options are located. Personally, I always use Sony products so there is hardly a learning curve for me. I recommend changing the recording to the highest quality possible, which is at 60 full frames per second. Go in to the menu. Go: "Image Quality / Size". Select "Frame Rate". Select "60p" then click "Next". Now click "OK" to save setting. Now you are set to the highest quality of video recording. Note that when it is set to this highest quality, that you cannot press the "Photo" button that is on top of the camera (it sits right up against the zoom lever), while you are video recording. If you do have the video quality set to a lower setting, it is possible to press the photo button which takes a photo while simultaneously recording video. But personally, I want nothing less than the most premium video quality possible, and will sacrifice all else to do so. There is a short USB cord that you cannot remove from the camera. This is a Sony standard and it is just amazing. You can use that USB cord to plug in to any USB charger and it will charge the camera. You can also use the embedded USB cord to plug in to your computer (or easily to any other computer wherever you are) to charge the camera and to transfer images and videos to the computer for long-term storage, editing, and sharing to all of your friends and family on your favorite social media sites. This camera has a micro-SD memory card slot. I have issues with it not inserting properly sometimes and the camera tells me to "Reinsert the memory card". I comply, and it usually works after trying once or twice. I found that a good trick seems to be to turn the camera over so that it is upside-down and then insert the memory card in to the slot firmly. It is so lightweight, that you can use a rope that has a clip where you can wear the rope around your neck, allowing the camera to hang as if a pendant on a necklace. I have had this before with my previous Sony camera that was much heavier and it worked well. This camera uses the very exact same battery as does my tiny Sony Actioncam (Sony's version of a GoPro) and consequently, I now have an extra battery for either camera. The batteries are very slim and lightweight. Great for packing many with you and you won't even notice. It has a great playback feature that will automatically mix clips from your videos from the day and it will create a final edited video for you to watch on the screen, and even allows you to save it for later so you can transfer and watch it on your computer. The zoom is very good. It says it is 60x optical zoom. Do not turn on digital zoom (on any camera, ever) as that distorts the image and is just horrible. Friends don't let friends use digital zoom. The higher the optical zoom number, the better. Don't be fooled by a high digital zoom number cause the higher the digital zoom number, the absolute worse the image will be (totally grainy and blocky and just ugly). I have a 32 GB memory card on board this camera and that gives me 2 hours 38 minutes of video recording at the highest quality. It records in stereo and it does not have any type of microphone input jacks, as it is just a very basic video camera. It has a standard tripod mounting screw hole that allows you to attach it to a standard tripod, monopod, or other attachments. It has a flip-switch near the lens that will open and close the lens cover. It is not a powered lens cover and does not open and close automatically, so be sure to remember to switch it closed after each use to prevent dirt and scratches to your lens. The camera will remind you that the lens cover is still closed, if you forget to open it up before starting to record video. I paid $179 for this Sony HDR-CX405 camera in April 2017 from Best Buy Honolulu. I don't expect this camera to be available for very long as I think it will soon be a discontinued item. This camera for this price range will be replaced be the next camera in the line. This camera should provide you a few years of service at a minimum and even longer if you take care of it.

I'm new to cameras and this one is a great beginners camera. It was super simple and easy to use. Super lightweight so I had no problem carrying it around during my vacation. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 is due to a problem I had. I originally ordered it Open Box and it said there were no missing pieces and when I received it the hdmi cable was missing. I took it to my nearby Best Buy and they wouldn't replace the missing part they would only sell me an hdmi cable which didn't make sense to me so I decided not to buy the cable. I went home and when I went to charge the camera a day before my vacation I saw the charging cable was missing as well. So I went to a different best buy and they were going to sell an hdmi cable to me and just give me the missing battery cable. They didn't have it so they were going to make me pay the difference into just buying a complete new camera. I went ahead and just did that because I had no time to try and argue. The brand new camera had all the parts and it was amazing. The battery life is alright. I had a backup battery though during my vacation so everything turned out fine. All in all though it's super lightweight, very simple to use, and very good for the price.

I love how light weight this camcorder is and the zoom helps you to see things really far without distortion. The menu is easy to navigate. You don't need to buy any other cords to hook the camcorder up your HDTV or computer; it comes with all of it! The battery is good for over 7 hours and will automatically shutdown after 30 secs of non-use, or after closing the window. My complaints are unless the person you are recording is close or speaking slightly louder than their inside voice the recorder will not pick up their voice, but if you have loud speaking friends or family this should not worry you. These are minor issues. The biggest problem I have is the USB charging wire attached to the camcorder. If that wire brakes there is no other way to charge the camcorder... Even with these complaints I would still recommend buying it. 4 stars because of the attached USB wire.

So far this camcorder has been good. I have used it for recording work processes in our manufacturing facilities and really like the video quality and the ease of downloading. Having the USB cable in the handle is great. You never lose it and never have to look for it. Using it for video has been very easy and it is very light and small so carrying it around is no issue. The battery lasts for between 3 and 4 hours so I wish that you could record while the camcorder was plugged in but you can't. Although it is a user issue (mine) I have had some problems taking photos. When you click the button, something flashes on the screen. I assumed it took the photo. (I was wrong). It will show you that it is capturing it when you take the photo. It also takes a long time. I didn't buy it for a camera so I don't fault it too much. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who wants good quality video from a small light camcorder.

This overall picture quality is sub standard for Sony. Even with lighting, video playback is reminiscent of something recorded on a $79.00 Vivitar or something. Sony has been known to set quality standards even on entry level, but they dropped the ball hard on this one. Most beginners nowadays use their smartphones and then if passionate enough will upgrade to a camera. Video cameras with poor playback quality like this one is going to help seal the fate of the camcorder market and allow DSLR’s to become the choice filming option! I know the economy is rough right now, but it’s no excuse for putting out substandard electronics. Hopefully Sony will revamp the quality of even this base model so the world can truly see why consumers have a historical respect for the quality of this companies products

Bought this camera for a rail trip to the Grand Canyon. Camera was easy to use as it fit in my right hand with easy to access video, still shot, on and off buttons. Flat screen display was nice to use except when in a position where the sunlight washed out the display. Bought two batteries as previous experience with another camera made me wish I had done that at that time. Buying a separate charger for the batteries might be a good idea as you have to charge the batteries IN THE CAMERA which means you can't use the camera at that time OR must remember to charge the batteries over night or when the camera is not being used. Great zoom (60x). Bought 128 GB memory which turned out to be over 14 hours (!) of recording time (2nd highest resolution setting - which allowed taking still shots AND video shots WITHOUT going into menus to change settings!). Just came back from trip so have yet to actually look at what I shot (video) or print (still photos) so can't offer any comments there.

    Horrible Video Quality!

    Posted
    Paula

I am very disappointed with this camcorder because the video quality looks great on the camcorder and very crappy on my computer. On the computer the videos are very dark and grainy. It took me hours to edit the videos to make them somewhat usable for my YouTube Channel. Unfortunately, I did not get to return this camcorder back to BestBuy in time to get a refund. I wasted $200.00, which is a shame! I ended up buying a far less expensive camcorder costing $70.00 that has far better video quality when uploaded to my computer. Finally, I did not like the AVCHD formats, which is not standard. Therefore, I do not recommend buying this camcorder.

Hi Paula, There is a possibility that your computer is not capable of playing HD movies smoothly.
You may want to upgrade the RAM (memory) of your computer, usually, it helps: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00030735

I bought this for my dad for Christmas, finally his first camcorder! This camera is tiny and so light in weight! It amazes me how great it captures video because of the weight. You can playback on the camera and it includes sound as well. Comes with a HDMI cable to connect to the tv and it's super easy- just plug in and begin. I also like when you plug the camera into the tv and play a video, it continues to play everything next without a gap so it loops it together like one big video. I also changed the video quality to "highest" and it's way more clearer than the default setting. The battery comes with the outlet box for the option of wall charging or USB conputer charging so that's super convienient. Definitely recommend especially for first timers and for those who just love to record. One thing I didn't know and was upset about was it did not come with a SD card so make sure you have one available to use or buy one because the camera won't let you record without one.

It took quite a bit of trial and error before I managed to get the hang of it but now it works easily. As usual, there is not enough info in the manual, but at least you do get one! The main drawback is that it washes out people's faces in very bright light, as on a stage where I shoot most of my stuff for my church. I need to leave the setting on auto because I often swing around to the congregation as there is interaction. Doing it on manual becomes too dark then. On the other hand, it does pretty well in other situations when the low light feature is utilized. Also handy, is that you can take photo's quite easily. Battery life is not bad and I've been able to get 90 minutes ok, but need to be careful on not zooming too much when I know I'll be shooting that long. Zoom is great and focuses pretty quickly.

I bought this camcorder to record some small events. The picture quality is ok and sound will depend of your background. I had to be very close in order to get good voice recording. Not great when wind is blowing hard, Not much to add, it is really basic, has good zoom, it is user friendly, I would recommend to a friend with this disclaim; if his/her purpose is to record their kids playing or if they are not looking for great quality as upgrades are limited (additional microphones wasn’t a good option, neither noise concealer) it’s a cheap choice for everyday activities. Not good for major events or large areas regardless if outdoor or indoor. Definitely not good for fast action activities.

Picked this camera up because I needed a third camera to do three camera interviews. Didn't want to spend a ton, and this was the cheapest HD video camera I could find. Excellent low light capability, color balance and autofocus. Can intersperse video with video from a Canon 70D or 5DII and fits in perfectly. Auto stabilization makes it great for hand held interviews when a tripod isn't practical, but has a tripod connection for when you need it. Charges from USB cable to computer. No remote mic connection, but audio works well. If you need better sound, best to record separately and synch. It's simple enough for a novice to use, but produces good enough quality (as long as you don't need 4K) that you can use it on more advanced projects.

This is the best camera on a budget you can get, I bought it back in 11-2015 and use it quite frequently so I waited over a year to do a review on it. I always record on the XAVC S mode which gives you a better quality it does use more space but its definitely worth it, I use it in conjunction with Adobe Elements which you can save your videos in 4k resolution. I got this camera at a steal for $129 at that time when it was on sale. in the daytime or very well lit places this camera shines, at night time not so much you can see a little bit of distortion but not as much as will be a deal breaker. i fine tune it when i'm editing my videos..I've read some reviews where they say they bought it for their kids...don't let those comments fool you..its an excellent camera keep in mind that is budget friendly. check this video out try to watch it in 4k resolution if you can, its not the best thing out there but it is an excellent product.

I was looking for a simple to use, small camcorder that would fit in my pocket. This camera was more than I hoped for for the price. Takes good HD pictures, even in low light, on wide angle with steady-cam the pictures look like they were shot using a tripod. Some reviews complain about the picture quality, but I think it was the setting to get maximum time that would reduce the resolution, then another complained about Best Buy Salesperson who gave bad info and rated this camera one star. I have a friend who saw the results and is going to buy this same great quality bottom of the line without all the bells and whistles that neither one of us needs. I've posted my first video edited with Pinnacle 19.5 on Vimeo in HD and have gotten good comments about the quality.

I wound up having to return this camera. It looked nice and looking at the visual quality on the cameras screen itself it looked great. I have a youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh6rF7NCWY0 using this camera. As you can see, it looks like something I would expect from a standard definition camera circa 2004. I had to go out and buy special software to edit this together, as windows movie maker does not support AVCHD or whatever the heck it is that Sony uses in order to be different from everybody else, which was an additional $35. When I lose footage and its the fault of the camera, that's when it goes bye-bye. I didn't have any sound on the last video that I recorded with it, so back to the store it went. Very, very disappointed. I went out and bought a Canon instead.

I was looking for something compact & affordable. This hit the nail on the head I was of course debating on getting something better but at the time I had no money. I've had this camera for about 2 months now & I've recorded my b-day celebration, my cousin's graduation, & a couple of vlogs. This camcorder is awesome! I don't know much about camcorder tech but from whatever I can learn from this one I will pass on knowledge to future buyers. This camera is small & discrete & can fit in cargo shorts or straight fit jeans. Very accessible the boot up time is almost non-existent. It gives plenty of recording options the settings are easy to toggle through my only complaint would be a bigger & more sturdy navigation toggle button I have small but beefy hands & it's not an issue for me to go through the settings it just feel better if it was bigger & more sturdy as well.

We researched video cameras for our daughter and son-in-law to find a good one where they could post films of their son and new baby due at the end of May. They seemed very pleased with the gift and used it right away for our Grandson's 3rd birthday party. They liked the ease with which it worked and quality of pictures. I haven't heard much more about using it lately, but am sure they will be taking pictures of the "Big Brother" welcoming his "baby sister". I also like the ease of purchasing the camera. I checked at our local Best Buy store & they didn't have one in stock. I checked on line as to what store had it immediate purchase. I called that store and they took my information, item #, etc and contacted me when it was ready for pick-up .I asked for an additional memory card and case for camera and they had all 3 items at the pick-up desk ready for me and my name on each item.

This is my first video camera. I use it solely for the creation of Soccer highlights for scouting purposes. The zoom is great. Even though I use it freehand, the image is not like watching the Blair Witch Project. Not sure if there is an image stabilization or I have a better than average steady-hand but it takes great video. Battery life is excellent. I get a full 90-minute game in on about 50% battery. It’s super light and the charger/USB function is pretty slick. I have no need for 4K, and I picked this up for $179 on a big BestBuy sale. Simply cannot beat it for twice the price. I bought a 32GB card and each game takes about 6-7GB in HD.

I read as many reviews as I could about this camcorder before I decided to purchase it. Everywhere online, it has an overall rating of 4.5-4.7, so I felt pretty confident in buying it. It's been less than 2 months later and the backlight in the LCD viewfinder has gone out. I can't see anything in the viewfinder and I can't use it! I can't return it because I made the mistake of not buying a warranty and SONY is giving me trouble trying to get their warranty to fix this. I do not recommend. This has only been used a handful of times and no one has pressed down on the viewfinder enough to cause damage to it. In fact, all I did was sit down and it blacked out!

I bought this camera, which was on sale, to film my daughter's graduation. We haven't bought a dedicated video camera since our digital 8mm tape camera. WOW! This thing is amazing. The pluses: clear HD video with excellent sound recording, the camera makes files for each segment so drag and drop into your video editor is simple, great stills with some zoom. The minuses: The optical zoom sounds incredible, but in the store I noticed the advertised zoom is based on a fish-eye like original picture so the actual zoom from reality is about 3X. I bought it anyway and was very happy with the results. I have some concerns about how little it weighs, but that paid off (with the video stability turned on) when recording long sequences.

Not groundbreaking or anything in technology. Doesn’t even have a touch screen. But it weighs hardly anything and is easy to use. Battery keeps a pretty long charge. My wife can put it away in her purse easily. In a time where most people record everything with their cellphones it may seem archaic. But my wife likes the simplicity of popping the screen out on side and pressing play and recording on the go. No opening apps or searching through photos and videos for what you recorded. It’s exactly what she wanted for a gift “simple device that does what it’s suppose to well”
