Stunning Image with HD Content - Streaming or Disc

I have had the 98QM8K TV for a few weeks and can confidently say that the colors, brightness, and black levels are all excellent with HDR material. I have replaced my projector and screen with this 98-inch TV and it has been a huge upgrade.
I have only had limited exposure to SDR material or OTA 1080P or less resolution content or TV watching. The TV seems to struggle somewhat with lower resolution content and its upscaling capabilities seem only fair. But, again, I really haven't yet worked on dialing in the settings for that type of content.
For UHD movies, the image can be stunning. For streaming HD content, the image can also be stunning. Since that is what I mostly watch, I can give this TV a solid 5-star rating.

TCL QM8K 98" Review

I purchased this TV based on the review from https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/qm8k
I recently spent about 3 months completely remodeling my basement to include a theater room and made the choice to go with a large TV over a projector for this space. I'm also a bit of a TV snob having both LG Signature OLEDs and Sony XBR OLED tvs throughout my home. Since this size of tv isn't made in an OLED panel, I knew I'd have to compromise on the overall picture quality that I'm used too. I even use an Alienware OLED ultrawide for work and PC gaming. That being said, this tv has some of the best looking inky blacks and contrast of any non-OLED tv I've ever seen. I also really appreciate that the two 2.1 HDMI ports are there and that the eARC HDMI port is not one of them. So many of these large format tvs that I looked at had the eARC taking over one of the two 2.1 HDMI ports and when paired with my Sonos Arc Ultra, which doesn't have HDMI passthrough, you basically loose the use of a 2.1 capable port. I have an Xbox X and a PS5 on this and I am using the other 2.0 HDMI port for the Nintendo Switch 2 - by using the built in Google TV for the streaming apps, I am able to use the soundbar and all my devices associated with the best signal/fidelity they can output. It's an impressive tv, and if you are looking for an alternative to a projector, I'd recommend it over any of it's peers at this size.

Closest to OLED experience in an ultra large scree

I've been on a quest to complete my living room home theater experience for about 4 years now. After covid I had to turn my movie room into a shared office and migrated all of that technology and experience to my living room. So after the successive upgrades first what is LG 65-in OLED then upgrading to a 77 inch LG OLED, everything was okay but it really wasn't quite cinematic and immersive. The problems weren't the OLED because it was large and beautiful. The problem was the size of the room and with open floor plan how many rooms in needed to service. But, for me to get the OLED need it for that size I would have to spend close to a car payment and that's just simply unacceptable. So my Alternatives were to go with the projector or with a 100 in mini led. Now I've had reservations about the picture quality particularly coming from an OLED experience with mini led. I started out looking at projectors, particularly short throw, but because it's a reflective medium your black level is always going to be limited by the screen that it is landing on. Also my living room and bottom floor has lots of windows so I would always have to keep him shut to be able to manage the ambient light even with an ALR screen. So that led me to a self-emissive alternative meaning a large television. So after looking at lg, samsung, hisense, and TCL, all of my research pointed me bang for the book towards the TCL qm8k as the best alternative to an oled. I caught it during the Thanksgiving break so the pricing was great for the 98 inch TCL. Now I have many years of experience mounting televisions, but the sheer size and weight of this TV would really lend me to recommend you having it professionally installed. The second problem I ran into was finding a proper amount because it is a large you need to have a 600 by 500 VESA pattern. I ordered a mount from amazon, but they failed to deliver in time so I wound up buying multiple mounts at Best Buy which luckily they had in stock as many didn't. Beyond the installation, once it was on the wall once it was configured this is a win. Not only is the picture immersive and matches my Dolby Atmos 7.2.2 soundscape, it is brighter than the sun so we can do with the brightness of the room. I no longer have to have my blinds closed doing certain parts of the day to watch television. The colors pop and the blacks which was my concern is close to oled. Why not Pitch Black like an old they are really really Inky black bars disappear against my black wall leaving it a magical experience at this size. I have done zero calibration out of the box and everything looks Bright contrasty Beautiful. Everything from movies to sports to stream content from YouTube looks amazing and almost three-dimensional at times. Even standard definition content looks amazing. And if watching multiview in my case with YouTube TV, each one of those four squares is equivalent to a 48-in television. The Google TV interface is Snappy and intuitive. I will say that I do not like the ads which is not exclusive to TCL, looks like LG and others have imposed that on to the viewer as well. All that said it is seamless it is rich and intuitive. Oh and one more thing, one of the other concerns when moving away from OLED to a mini LED was off axis viewing. I can tell you definitively haven't watch football for many different angles on Thanksgiving day, this was a negligible issue. If you really looking forward you notice it but it is so slight that again it's a non-issue. TCL has done a magnificent job with this w h v a panel that all the colors all the saturation looks fine even at extreme angles. I have not tested the sound because again I have a home theater sound setup and my humble opinion to have a television like this without at least a multi-channel soundbar is a bit of a waste. With that said I'm offering no judgment this is my own humble opinion, and my understanding is that the sound from the television audio is pretty good.

Real World Review: my take on the 98”
|

Posted .

After living with the TCL 98QM8K, the biggest takeaway is this: it delivers a genuinely impressive 98-inch experience without feeling like you massively overpaid just to get the size. For movies, sports, and gaming, the sheer scale combined with strong Mini-LED brightness makes it feel closer to a “home theater wall” than just a big TV.
Picture quality is where it wins people over. HDR content looks punchy and vibrant, and it holds up well even in rooms with some ambient light. Compared to other 98” TVs around this price, the QM8K simply looks more alive — highlights pop more, colors have more depth, and overall it feels less compromised. With good 4K sources, it can look downright impressive for the money.
That said, it’s not perfect. In darker scenes you can notice some blooming around bright objects, especially if you’re sitting off to the side. Motion and upscaling are solid but not class-leading — lower-quality cable or heavily compressed streams won’t look as clean as they do on higher-end Sony or LG sets. And like most TVs this big and thin, the built-in speakers are fine for casual viewing but don’t match the scale of the picture.
Where the 98QM8K really lands is value. You’re not getting flagship-level refinement, but you are getting a massive, bright, modern TV that feels far more premium than most alternatives in its price range. If you want a true 98” screen and don’t want to spend top-tier money, this TV makes a strong, practical case — and for a lot of buyers, that’s exactly the balance they’re looking for.

We created a wall for the 98" QM8K and it is massive. The room is very big and has large windows with very little glair from ambient light. I was worried that the blacks would not be as black as other technologies but in my home this looks better than my old 85" Samsung 90Q. I am impressed with this relatively new manufacturer.

It’s been a month and I can tell you that experience has been really nice. To be concise. Picture quality is better considering a 98” inch screen which I paired with TCL soundbar q85h so the sound is mind boggling. I did get some fluctuation on the screen when I paired it with Apple TV but it was ok and then all the 4K titles were amazing. The Best Buy geek squad was awesome and the ey mounted on the wall within 15 minutes. You do have to do adjustment in the picture and sound to your need else the Dolby vision is fantastic

So far the Tcl qm7k 98 inch version has been a great experience. I pick the qm7k over the qm8k because of 2 main reasons. Firstly the qm8k would be too bright for my apartment. Secondly, when look @ the comparisons between the 2 TV's the qm7k has a better contrast ratio on computer games than the qm8k. When looking @ the qm8k pc gaming examples, the graphics look overexposed, or washed out compared to the qm7k. And plus with the best buy plus membership i got a huge refund if the qm7k being on sale..

Ciming from high end TV's like LG OLED and Samsung NEO qled, i must say im impressed. The size alone of the 98 inch is immersing when sitting about 10 feet away. Th epicture is great with vibrant colors. Not OLED black levels but very close. I was debating this tv or the Hisense U8 and after reviews i went with the TCL. I guess it has a better local dimming zone algorithm that makes it look closer to OLED. It does make a buzzing sound when pushed to the brightest setting, im thinking it might be a power issue from what I've read. It only does it in vibrant and sports mode though.

After checking many reviews and comparing TV’s in stores we decided TCL was the Best Buy for the money. The ease of setup and the on screen guide made it simple. While a printed guide may have been easier, there were no issues in the setup phase. The picture clarity and sound are excellent and once you navigate the remote controls the rest is easy. We are very happy with this purchase.

The TCL QM8K is an excellent TV. It has a 10 bit panel, fantastic brightness and excellent color reproduction. It has nearly OLED blacks, and excellent local dimming control. Check out RTINGS, as it is rated the best 98-100” TV. PS5 pro game play looks good too.

I bought the 98” to replace an 85” Sony X900F. The Sony has superb processing so I was a bit leery since I watch a ton of sports and hockey is superb on the Sony. Zero DSE and great motion. After having this now for two weeks I feel I made the right choice but there are issues with this TCL. First the good: superb blacks approaching very closely my LG 83” C1 OLED. HDR viewing is superb. Crisp picture and extremely bright. Football is an absolute joy. When I feed this beast a 4k stream from YTTV it’s astounding. I’ve watched several college games and a pro game in 4k and it’s worth the picture alone to watch regardless of who’s playing. I’m feeding this unit with a stick, Apple TV, and NVidia Shield…ya I’m a bit of a tech geek. I’m also using an AVR and 5.1 surround so the on board speakers don’t make any difference to me. As a TV for streaming as long as the feed is solid it’s a glorious picture.
Now the not so good: it’s happened only once but under certain circumstances there is a very noticeable buzz from the TV. Even with the AVR pumping out the volume if there are any quiet scenes the buzz is very apparent. Second, and according to my research this is a serous problem with TCL TVs, there is a minor but distinct audio delay when viewing a 4k UHD disk. Same for standard Blu-rays. It’s unwatchable it’s that bad. According to my research, there is no fix for this. I’ve loaded the latest firmware and I’ve tried to make adjustments both in the TV and my receiver and my 4k Blu-ray player, and it has resulted in no improvement whatsoever. Fortunately, I have a separate 13-speaker theater with the OLED TV as its centerpiece so I don’t need to be watching discs on this TV. However, if this were the centerpiece of my own home theater, I would return the TV it is that bad. So buyer beware if you’re going to use this for streaming, you should have zero problem but if you’re going to use this in a theater, you really want to reconsider this purchase since returning a 98 inch TV is no small feat. Overall, I recommend this TV under the circumstances I have laid out here.

But then I am only 80 years old, and I have only been watching every evolution since the big box with the tiny picture in ‘51. I have had the best - shootout winners - from LG and Sony, but this TV is so incredible that it makes we believe that TCL is really doing something right! The one negative is that the sound is very underwhelming … but … last week there was a software update that noticeably improved it. Also, it is very encouraging to know that TCL is doing updates, particularly this close to its arrival on the scene. Since reviewers had all mentioned the sound, it seems that TCL is trying to keep their products up to the competition. So now, I am going for the QM9K and I can hardly wait. The TV is 98” and way past immersive. It draws me in and makes me a part of what is happening. I would like to see something better than this for $3000. which is what I paid!

So far everything is great. Blindingly bright when you push it but still plenty good at lower brightness levels. It does have the hum above 60% brightness, which I believe from reading forums is the fan. No clicking or buzzing noises. Could it be almost too big at 98"? Perhaps but still awesome. Speakers are adequate, wouldn't hang your hat on the B&O stuff too much and a soundbar is still the better way. Excited for the Z100 Dolby FlexConnect stuff coming soon.

The TCL 98” Q8 is amazing. I had an 85” Sony Bravia (2023) model which was great, but it doesn’t compare to the picture quality of this TCL. No blooming or blurred scenes. I have a surround sound system so I didn’t spend much time using the installed audio.

TV Great-Delivery a mixed bag

I watch mostly SD (1080 or 720) sources and was worried that a 98 inch tv would look terrible. Not at all. It looks stunning (even with DVDs). I am using it with an easel style stand that works very well. My only issues are nitpicks. First, it is VERY reflective. When it is showing black during the day, it is like a mirror (with noticeable rainbow from direct sources). At night and in most scenes, this is not an issue. It takes a few second to find my tivo. It also has to find wi-fi each time it turns on (less than 10 seconds).
My delivery was an issue. The company called the night before and told me they thought my stand would not work (they did not even know what stand I was using) and they did not think it would fit in my house (they had no idea what my house was like). When they arrived, he said it would not fit. I had a board that was the length and width of the TV and showed him it would fit with some (not much) room to spare. He said that none of these TVs fit and that he had failed to deliver any of the 8 sets he had tried to deliver before he got to me. He finally said that he would only deliver if I took full responsibility (which I did). At 3 points he claimed he could not get it in the door and each time I had to show him that all he needed to do was make a slight adjustment. The delivery team did not want to do the job. Be prepared to push them. Once inside they refused to do the log in to the streaming services (as was supposed to be included) since it would take too much time. No big deal since I could do it.
To sum up: TV 5 stars, delivery 1.5.
