As you noted, the vast majority of reviews for this model are quite positive. I wonder if you have a defective unit.
You don't mention the nature of the trouble you've experienced with the touchpad, so I'll point out that it can be toggled OFF & ON by using the F5 key. If that key is inadvertently pressed, the touchpad toggle feature can be perceived as a problem. If that description sounds like a match for the trouble you've experienced, try pressing the F5 key next time the touchpad becomes unresponsive and if that fixes it then that will mean that a prior press of F5 had disabled it. (Legacy F5 functions, if used by your software, can be accessed by pressing and holding down the 'Fn' key while tapping the F5 key.)
