I took a chance on this game, despite not having liked JRPGs for year. Vanillaware is one of the most unique devs in the business. The gameplay has hooked me to the point that this is my game of the year, so far. The art is dope as always from Vanilla. Music is epic. And the gameplay... hoo boy. It is fast, intuitive, engaging and deep. I am mimaxing the heck out of 50 units right now and having a blast! 10 outta 10 game.

Vanillaware makes great games. Unicorn Overlord has me wishing I was playing it while I'm at work, while I'm cooking dinner, while I'm playing with the dog, while I'm helping my kids, while I'm talking to my wife! The story, music and gameplay is just excellent. The classes combined with items and then group management has you looking to try different ways to take on battles. Can't all be explained in a little user review. This is a really good game.

    Fantastic Strategy Game

I went into Unicorn Overlord with few expectations but was blown away by how enjoyable the strategy elements of the game were. The core of the game lies with the unit building mechanics: you can build units of up to 5 members which each follow a routine that you create ahead of time. I had anticipated that the automated nature of the combat would be a bit boring, however I found it to be fun to try and optimize. Small tweaks can have huge impacts. If you fail to take out a particular unit or waste big attacks on units with low health, you may risk taking more loses yourself, and the swings from this may be huge. The characters and story weren’t as interesting to me as prior Vanillaware games like Odin Sphere or 13 Sentinels, however they were passable. The main cast of characters is charming enough, and the voice work and designs are beautiful and well executed as to be expected from this studio. Overall, I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed this game than I expected and would say that if you enjoyed the demo or are on the fence to try the game.

This game is great. Played on a PS5, the animation, music, and story all come together to formulate a fantastic tactical RPG experience. The battle and team building system are extremely fun to learn, and mastering them is very rewarding. Well done Vanillaware.

Vanillaware proves they can do no wrong. This game is a 2D, hand painted lover letter to gaming. A strategy RPG with just the right amount of action and variety mixed in to keep you hooked. Reminded me of Saturn's Dragon Force at first, then soon blew it out of the water.

Excellent spiritual successor to Ogre Battle! I enjoyed my 55 playthrough on normal. The story is good, but the gameplay is phenomenal. I don't know if we'll get a sequel, but I'd love one!

Never played this genre but the developer never misses so I gave it a shot on sale. There is a lot you can strategize with, good progression systems and tutorials/explanations. Always want to play one more run. Top tier art. Music is okay. Like other vanillaware games you want to find another game like it to play but there isn't one

Expect the unexpected from game developed by Vanillaware. Their last game 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim wasn't what I expected but I enjoyed it very much.

As someone who has purchased every game Vanillaware has put out in the US and repurchased all their updated versions, this was an easy day one. Tactical RPGs normally aren't my thing, but it has that Vanillaware artstyle I love, a generally approachable gameplay style, and a lot of accessibility features that were nice even if I never used them. If you liked Ogre Battle or older Fire Emblems, definitely give this a shot.

I love RPGs. I love JRPGs. And I have waited for something old school for a long time. There are certain games or sub-genres where it's been a monopoly for far too long. And that breeds complacency. Look at palworld/Pokemon, for instance. This is, in my opinion, the same situation but for fire emblem. There's no "weapons triangle," but certain classes counter others. There is a relationship system, and there is a way to progress it outside of battle. There are infinitely repeatable leveling missions scattered throughout the map. Don't want to wait for a special character to show up? Hire a mercenary with their same class. Waited for the special character but aren't completely satisfied with them? Use a special in-game item to take them back to character creation to change their stats and look. Side quests? Got em. Stupidly powered weapons that take the right amount of effort to obtain? Got em. Create a plus version of weapons to bring your favorite sword form Act 1 up to end game stats? Got it. The best version of FFXII's gambit system I've ever seen? Got it. Snu-snu with the amazonian colosseum lady? Almost ☹️ I haven't pre-ordered a game in years. I pre-ordered this one. It's so hard to keep my attention and there are so many good games out that I haven't 100%-ed a game in a long time. This one was my forth platinum trophy. In short, go get this game. Right now. It's on sale? Buy it even faster. Loved loved loved it.
