Andy Scott - Ruby & All Things Purple - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Andy Scott is a jazz singer... but that's like saying Al Pacino is an InchactorInch and Julia Childs a Inchcook.Inch Scott comes from the tradition of the classic ballad/American Songbook style but he's not InchretroInch-like the best singers he melds the best of the past with the immediacy of the Eternal Now, with an eye on the horizon. Angels finds Scott collaborating with jazz piano heavyweight Cyrus Chestnut, one of the finest Jazz & Gospel pianists on the planet who also co-wrote the title tune. Whereas some jazz singers perform/record many done-to-death standards, Scott ups the ante by writing (or co-writing) nearly all of the songs on Angels like they say in the movies, this time it's personal. Album Tracks 1. Somebody Like You 2. Angels (Always Welcome 'Round Here) 3. What Magic Is This 4. Valium & Soda Pop 5. Haunted House (The Other Side of Blue) 6. The Things We Leave Behind 7. Ninety-Nine 8. Someday You'll Be Sorry 9. Learning to Fly 10. Whatcha Gonna Do on Monday 11. Blowin' Kisses at the Moon 12. Bye, Bye, Blackbird 13. Swingtime Lullabye

Here is the under-recorded vocalist Andy Bey, backed only by his own piano playing - which at one time, propelled the bands of Roland Kirk, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Cecil Taylor and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - singing with a luxuriant, mature approach that pulls no punches. His delivery is totally unique. He has a message to get out, a story to tell and tell it he does. Featuring four of his own intensely personal compositions the set list is as thought-provoking as it is satisfying, just like Andy Bey himself. Album Tracks 1. It Never Entered My Mind 2. But Not for Me 3. Dedicated to Miles 4. The Demons Are After You 5. Love Is Here to Stay 6. There's So Many Ways to Approach the Blues 7. The Joint Is Jumpin' 8. Being Part of What's Happening Now 9. The Morning After 10. S'wonderful 11. Dissertation on the State of Bliss
