As much as I'd like a brand-new iPad Air with the latest processor and software, I hate what Apple has done to iPads. The most recent generations have become much harder to use, so I decided to get an iPad Air 3, the most up-to-date version with the iPad's original configuration (meaning with a physical "home" button). It's not appreciably faster than my old iPad Air 2, but the software's much more recent so it still works with apps that no longer work with the software on the iPad Air 2. There are also issues with the screen: the background is yellowish, even when put on the whitest setting. As I say, this iPad is an inexpensive stopgap, but I don't know what I'm going to do when its software becomes outdated.
