About this product
It is not exactly easy to find one's way around in the pages of Benda family history with it's two Georgs, three Friedrichs, two Heinrichs - and more! This family of musicians from Bohemia came to Germany in 1742 at the request of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (1712-86), and served at the court there for a century. The unknown Benda with whom we are concerned here was Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich, the son of Franz Benda and nephew of Georg Benda. He was born in 1745 and died in 1814. Although he wrote operas, cantatas, and oratorios, he is best known for his instrumental compositions and for the concertos he wrote for various instruments. His talent as a gifted violist and violinist also made him a popular interpreter. The virtuoso passages in his three concertos for viola demonstrate his perfect mastery of the instrumental technique of the viola typifying his times. We have our soloist Jean-Eric Soucy to thank for the discovery of the viola concertos, and he in turn is grateful to the Edition Offenburg publishing company, which with it's outstanding correction work has made available a wonderful gift for all violists. Friedrich Benda's viola concertos are beyond doubt magnificent additions to the viola repertoire on the same high level as Stamitz, Hoffmeister, and others. Album Tracks 1. Viola Concerto No. 1 in F Major [Lorb 314] 2. Viola Concerto No. 2 in E Flat Major [Lorb 315] 3. Viola Concerto No. 3 in E Flat Major [Lorb 316]

In terms of the quantity of his output, Ernst Eichner should be regarded as a minor composer. His legacy consists of several operas, chamber music and several collections of symphonic works of six pieces each; this amounts to about fifty works, revealing something quite different from the tag Inchminor composerInch. The spirited, colourful and empathetic treatment of the orchestra often appeared to contemporaries as being an expression of a Inchtender heartInch or of Inchmeek grace and charming sweetnessInch, whereas they were certainly not yet conscious of the fact that in Eichner's creations (as well) were the beginnings of the symphonic form, which not much later became the classical standard bearer of all great things. The Italian orchestra Theresia has chosen four representative pieces from his remarkable catalogue for these recordings. These reflect the stylistic development of this superb violinist and composer, who initially left his native Mannheim for Zweibrücken and finally, after an odyssey, arrived at the court of the Prussian king in Berlin, where he died in 1777 at the age of 37. Album Tracks 1. Symphony in D Major Op. 11 No. 3 2. Symphony in F Major Op. 10 No. 3 3. Symphony in D Major Op. 1 No. 1 4. Symphony in B Flat Major Op. 7 No. 2
